I just got home from work to find that Shippo has decided to randomly tear a hole in his crate pad and de-stuff it... after being absolutely FINE for the entire first YEAR of his life. He has never torn up his crate pad before.
I'm still a bit PO'd about it since I just found it. >-\/-< So I let him stay in there on the bare floor until I can look at him again... I hope he's enjoying the cold, hard plastic crate floor because he just lost his bed. >o\/o<

Poor puppy! Sounds like he's bored!! Typical destructive bored teenager behavior in my humble opinion.

After an entire year of not showing destructive boredom behavior? He had a stuffed Kong in there which he always goes nuts for. I don't buy it, not the way it was so completely random.
Either way, he's lost his bed indefinitely.

Most likely boredom - dogs are not vindictive or do things to teach us lessons!! He could be looking for another texture to chew on if his back teeth are bugging him. Jem is 16 months and has been chewing fabric things with her back teeth for a couple of months.

I never assumed it was spite. But I thought for sure that by now he had figured out that beds are not for chewing. I guess I was wrong. So he gets bare floor for a while, although I have NO IDEA when the next time is he'll randomly shred something now. >O\/o<

Hang on to this thought: They do come out of it. And hang on tight.
Tucker had been so well behaved for over a month, I decided to let him free range one day while I went to work (I usually gated him in the dining room). The morning sun hit the dining room in the morning but moved to the living room in the afternoon and I wanted him to be able to move to where he would be cool.
I left him with his kong filled w/ cheese. I came home he had chewed the front of the love seat. And I mean chewed it.
It was done, it was over, nothing I could do but ground him for life!
In the middle of the night I woke up, went down stairs, looked under the love seat. And there was his Kong with the cheese still in it. He had rolled the Kong under the love seat and was not giving up until he got it back.
He destroyed my love seat but at least it wasn't random, he was trying to get at his Kong.
I felt better...........................

Thanks for that. Heck, for all I know, he got a bunch of peanut butter from his Kong onto the bed and just tried to eat the bed. >-.-;<
I just feel like it's a lost cause ever giving him anything to make his crate comfortable, and that I'll never be able to trust him outside of his crate. When I came home and found this, I felt like a big fat failure, because after a year of reliability as far as beds go, he suddenly decided to be destructive for some reason, and now I feel like I can't trust him again, not even in his crate! >-.-< *cries*

Don't cry Cheetah. I know a guy in Tennessee that could help with your problem. Feeling as you do right now it may be best to just ship that beautiful creature down here for a week and perhaps I can have a one on one with him as we stroll the country side and the mountain trails up in Gatlinburg and we can picnic with some real hedge hogs!!:D

This just happened for the first time right? You could be right that some of the peanut butter got onto his bed and he tried to "eat" the bed. It seems a bit strange that a dog that never destroyed his bedding would do that without a reason. I know that Cody is not a chewer, but a couple of times when I gave him a treat in his crate and some of the crumbs went under his pad, he was trying very hard to get at them, pawing at his pad and just seemed so intent on getting every last morsel.
Do you sew at all? - you could buy two pieces of fleece cut to the dimensions of his crate and sew 3 sides together and turn it inside out and then sew up the 4th side - that way, there would be no stuffing inside and it would still be soft, or just throw in an old towel for now.
And Susan, it was you with the chewed chair and the kong. I remember the story, but could not remember who "told" it the first time. I could easily see Cody trying to get at his Kong if it rolled under the chair.

Awww mommy he's so sorry I am sure. Bless your heart Cheetah.
Egan is my little chewer, he normally doesnt bother anything, but I do have to watch him the couch pillows. He likes to tuck his head under them and flip them off into the floor. If I dont watch him he will start to find a small spot in the seam and start to defluff the pillow.
Susan and can sooo see my two attacking the big bad sofa for taking thier kong...lol

I've decided that Shippo will be allowed to sleep on an old blanket, but during the day I will still probably take out the blanket until I'm SURE the wild hair is out of his system... >9.9<

Someone posted this somewhere once and I saved it for future reference. Maybe a pad like this would work better until you are certain he is through this possible chewing phase?

Poor Cheetah... teens are a pain sometimes. Could be teething like was mentioned - I know sometimes Chloe likes the pressed bones (well most of the time :p ) but she does like to chew on her soft stuffed toys. She doesn't tear them up but she does like to give them a good going over .... Em has always preferred the stuffed toys for chewing. B4 Chloe, Emma would have a pressed bone for a month or more b4 it was gone - now her's still last a week unless you know who gets hold of it!
Maybe leave Shippo both hard and soft toys in his crate while your gone...
David - should we call you the "Corgi Crooner" helping troubled corgi teens

Poor Cheetah! I can relate - Jackie has been through many a bed in her day. She doesn't chew the stuff in her crate, but every few months or so, she likes to destroy her "other" bed - the one we leave out in the kitchen for her to lay on. She's a stinker . . . doesn't she know how much those beds COST?
Susan - I never get tired of hearing about Tucker's altercation with the love seat. Classic! :)

Okay, we're rolling on the floor laughing - and it's a bare floor with no bed, no pad, no nothing except an old frayed beach towel that was saved from the rag bag. Liam got a very thick and plushy fleecy bed and at about the 10 month mark he shredded it. And then I got him a slightly less plushy (AKA less expensive) bed with egg-carton foam in a nylon with fleece cover. That was a disastrous mess. So I put a dense-foam backpacking pad UNDER the towel and that was small blue pieces. I put the rest of the blue pad under the crate tray so it will at least insulate it from the floor - not that there is any extreme temperature in the laundry room in Houston. So I finally got him a couple of polar fleece scarves to cover the beach towel and the poor mistreated dog has to sleep just on the shredded towel. Brat.
He loves pillows. He has a couple of TV pillows that he lays on to chew up his toys and watch tv with the family. One has a hole with fiberfill leakage but the other is still not touched YET. Is this a CORGI thing?

The Primo pads look cool but I'm pretty worried about sinking $40 into a possible chew toy. I must be too cheap or something.

Tucker does seem to be outgrowing the chewing phase but Lulu makes him look like a light weight.
They are gated into the dining room when I leave for work 3 days of the week or when I have to go out and leave them home.
There is a plastice mesh gate in front of the back door because they have chewed the door frame. I have one X pen protecting the loveseat, book case, and floor lamp from them and another x pens guarding my dining room set and the buffet.
It is what it is!

Lately, Andy has been caught chewing, too - there is a spot on the frame of my patio French doors (in fairness, it looks like it was chewed on and painted over before I moved in - but she's helping). And she chewed up a corner of a magazine the other night.
I hope this is not "signs of things to come."

I never had a chewed bed- Dillon has never ripped his bed or chewed on it... I consider myself lucky. Gus I just got 2 months ago as a 2 + yr old dog and he has not done any chew damage on anything since he has come home. In fact Dillon and Gus both have their own little teddy bears in their crates that never ever get chewed on... not sure why they don't chew up their teddy bears or their blankets or their actual bed... but they dont... now toys in the livingroom are not as lucky, they get de stuffed and shredded right up!

Jackie doesn't chew the stuff in her crate either. The pad / bolsters have been in there for over a year, the blanket she has had since Day 1, and her teddy bear is almost 18 months old, and they are all (basically) ok. Teddy used to be wearing a Santa hat, but I guess Jackie felt that hats were not a good look for him (or maybe she didn't want him to feel silly when Christmas was over), so it's gone.

We've probably been very lucky as none of the dogs we've ever had - and there have been a few - have ever been chewers-of-random-stuff. Rose did have a go at the corner of my beloved dictionary one time, but that was my fault because I left it on the floor and she was only a wee pup. She did get a bollocking, though, because I caught her at it! I've always made sure our dogs have alternatives to the mainstream stuff that they clearly know are theirs, but I guess that doesn't always work.

My friend's son has a French Bull Mastiff- like the dog in Hooch- and he took her to the vet this week as she had spots on her face- guess what teenage acne!

The face acne is usually caused by eating or drinking out of plastic bowls.

oh Cheetah, I can totally understand how you feel now:NAH: it really hard to get thru the teen years..I have lost so many pairs of shoes to Buta that I have sort of grown numb:EEK: I have tried everything, left a dozen toys on the floor, sprayed bitter apple on my shoes, but she some how will just get to them. there was once she chewed up my bra +DULL+ But luckily she has seen stopped doing so, she decided it was time to stop....good luck cheetah...

My DH just called to tell me that the cable guy is there and they have discovered that Liam dug up the cable and chewed it in half. Then they noticed that he also dug up the phone line and chewed it, although it isn't in half, it is all frayed and it sounds like a freight train is on the line. So DH is mad. And I'm at work thinking about what to do to dog proof the line. Aaaghhh. I've never had this happen before.
Wow, naughty Liam! Good luck with that one.
Maybe he's giving you a sign - he wants it to be an Amish home? Hope he doesn't find the electrical cable!

He wants you all to himself! The phone and TV cut into his quality time!
I hope you find a solution.

Most likely boredom -
Maybe you could try putting the crate, door off, into an x-pen. That would give more freedom, and might relieve the boredom, if that is what it is.
How long is he in his crate while you are gone?
Cheetah
05-04-2007, 11:35 AM
I already do that sometimes. I am gone anywhere from 4 to 9 hours, and the ex-pen is for those extended periods of time. Otherwise, he is crated with a stuffed kong and toys of various textures, and the radio is even left on. He is also exercised before I leave.
This seems to have been a random teenage dog incident, not boredom, and I've solved it for now by simply removing his bedding during the day. Out of sight, out of mind.
