View Full Version : Corgi on point!

After living with us for six months, Sadie has definitely developed some new skills. When she first arrived, she would follow Hank (our German shorthaired pointer) outside to check on our squirrel or bird population. Hank would freeze in his gorgeous point the minute he saw a squirrel. Sadie never honored his point.:NAH: Instead, she would bolt right past him, head for the squirrel or birds, and scare the "prey" away at once.
Now however, Sadie follows Hank's lead! She runs just past him when he's on point so that she is in the lead, but then she freezes too. There's nothing funnier than a stubby little corgi trying to hold a steady profile!
What comes next is even funnier. She will eventually begin to creep up on the targeted invader...slowly placing one paw and then another just like her teacher Hank does. She will even do this when she is outside alone!
She doesn't have the innate patience that Hank has. Hank will hold his point for 15 minutes if the situation warrants it - Sadie is good for about three minutes at the very most. :CUTE: And she still rushes past Hank when the mysterious dog-signal has been given to "GO"! Of course, she never gets the squirrel (unlike Hank, who amazingly, and sadly, has gotten to the little critter first on at least two occasions over the last seven years!)
But what a smart corgi!!!! :NOTWORTHY:

Good girl, Sadie! And kudos to Hank for being such a good "teacher"! :CUTE:
I am impressed; there's no way my Trevor would NOT go chasing after that squirrel!

Wow... how neat that she picked that up from your pointer. Who knew corgi's were also hunting dogs LOL. I agree... I definitely want a picture of the new corgi/pointer!!

that's really neat. Dogs learn alot by example. Very cool. A picture would be neat!

I've been trying to get a picture for a long time, but my opening the door to snap a better pix seems to be a signal to charge! I'm going to keep trying though, because I want a picture of it too. It's really hard to believe! There's Sadie, crouched low (something of a wasted effort of course ), ears flat, nose leading the way, moving each paw in a very deliberate manner toward her unsuspecting prey....
What a hoot!!!

Someone on this list described Lulu as "cat like". And I reported that was a great observation. When Lulu was a baby, she would stalk Tucker like a cat would.
Lulu chases birds and squirrels but every now and then, she will revert back to her stalking pose after birds.
Amazing how smart they are.

"Crouching corgi"...wasn't that a movie a few years ago? You know, "Crouching Corgi, Stalking Tiger" (or whatever it was!)

I can picture the pointing as Pepper once in a while would do that in the house. Chester did it once. But the crouching/creeping is incredible! Guess it goes back to the genes for flattening when the cows kick. Hmm Pepper did do a creep once - to get under the Petco shelving to retrieve the iddy bitty kernel of food!
This is too much. If I tell my son, he'll set up a military obstacle course of netting for Chester to creep under to get a treat!:TWITCHY: If Chester is smart, he'll "tell" Erec to go first.
I can't wait for a photo of Sadie in the hunt mode.
