I was going to put this in the non-corgi discussions because I am asking about my cat but then thought that there may come a time when our Corgis may need to eat a Low Ash Food.

Looks like my cat may have an infection and/or crystals - there is blood in the urine, and I was wondering if anyone knows of a low ash food for him that is not on the Recall list - I am hoping Darci reads this because I think she has researched this before. And what do they consider low ash - is there a percentage or number value?

Hey Linda,

For Darci who had many problems with urinary crystals I try to keep the ash no higher than 6.5

Timberwolf has the lowest of dry food that I have found, Eagle pack is another great brand the holistic fish formula is thier lowest.

John the nutritionist for EP is great about answering questions, I know he has said their cat food is also is great for cats prone to UTI and keeping the ash levels low.

I will do a bit of looking as well but right off the top of my head I would say Eagle Pack, also increase his canned food (EP) and add water to it if he will eat it that way.

I would also change from tap water to bottled water, I buy gallon jugs for 65 cents. You can do distilled for the first few weeks until he clears then change to bottled.

Regular tap water tends to be on the high side ph wise.

Thank you for the info.

I picked up some meds and Royal Canin Prescription canned food that he needs to eat for 4 weeks to help dissolve the crystals and then after that, he needs a maintenance food so they don't come back, and I prefer not to feed Royal Canin prescription food as a maintenance.(I posted this info on another thread where Emilie had asked how Owen was doing)

I will look into the Eagle pack that you mentioned and the Timberwolf.

thanks for the water info also.

Thank you Cindy, this looks like a very good food that may work great for him for maintenance.:D

Thanks for this info- Any idea how much ash is in the feline Innova Evo? just curious if you know if they are on the high end, both my cats are not prone to urinary issues but i still find this to be interesting info).

I am doing a bit of reserach on home made diets for the dogs... i will probably start a new thread on this... i am really on the fence..

in the meantime I hope Owen feels better fast

ahh, sorry, Dry kibble... the two cats i have left are not big canned food eaters... Misty had to becuase of the diabetes and never could have any dry food as it spiked her blood sugar.
