What's a safe chew toy for a pup? (3 mths plus)
Little Clare has just started to shred newspapers.
Her teeth are rather sharp (she has been practicing it on my toes).

Is rawhide ok? Raw or cooked carrots? (how much?)
Nylabone?
She has a Petstages toy (used to be Trax's) and a brand new soft cloth toy bone.
Thanks.

Cooked carrots would be too soft. Raw ones are ok.

I like pressed rawhide, nylabones, hard rubber toys.

Peggy, I'm always looking for good chews for Mojo, can you explain what pressed rawhide is, and what the difference is? Thanks.

Pressed rawhide is bone shaped (usually) rawhide that's pressed together. They last longer than the knotted rawhide chews.

Thanks Peggy, and I've seen them in stores. I'll give them a try, they actually look like they will digest better than those knotted ones where they can pull off and swallow layers.

Some of the chew toys that are made for pups that you can freeze are good Artos - I don't know what selection of chews you have there. The pet stages stuff seems to be good. Just be careful of anything that can come apart or get back in her throat and cause her to choke.

I only allow mine to chew things like rawhide under supervision.

Nyla bones were the only thing that stopped Jemma from beavering my furniture's wooden legs - well that and wrapping the legs in cloth!:TWITCHY:

Thanks folks.
1 Will get pressed rawhide and later- carrots.
2 I have a nylabone but its been there for a long time (Trax used to have it but he didnt like it, neither does Barn2). Should I just wash it and give it to the little tyke?

3. This girl (Clare) is VERY determined and focused. If she wants something- she will keep coming back to it. Like my pants, my shoes, my foot.
I (and others) have

tapped her on her muzzle,
shaken her holding the scruff of her neck,
pushed her into submission mode....
yelled ather with a loud NO!

but she just bounces back to do the same old thing...with defiant barks and energized bites!
Sometimes she gets rather frenzied about doing the same thing....

4.She's only 3 months. How do I make sure she understands NO?
Barn2 is getting protective of me. He sometimes comes and stands between me and Clare when she gets too much. She stops when she sees him looking at her. While I am honoured to have him try to protect me, do I stop him from being Mummy's protector/enforcer/bouncer....lest he harm the kid?

Thanks.

How about trying walking away and ignoring her? Colby was a determined pant leg grabber, but if I ignored him (after detaching him), he learned quickly that doing that meant NO PLAY. And sometimes he needs a gentle reminder, a little "Ah Ah" noise and stop playing.

Good luck!

I'll second that. Everything you are doing is still giving her attention, it's no fun if nobody else is playing. Frodo did this a lot as a pup, a lot of grabbing pantlegs, he even ruined a few of my jeans, if she just keeps coming after you ignore her then completely remove yourself from the situation so she can't keep coming back (I used to stand on a chair so Frodo couldn't reach me, lol)

As far as chews go, I love bullysticks!! Well, I don't love bullysticks, my dogs love bullysticks
Cow tracheas and cow hooves are also good, but I might worry about the hooves with a puppy, they're really hard.
As far as non-edible chew things I love the Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff bones, they even make some specifically for puppies. Linky (http://www.planetdog.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=PUPPY%20BONE).
I don't usually like to give my dogs too much non-natural treats/food, but I love the Everlasting Treat Ball (http://www.triplecrowndogs.com/shop/product.htm?loc=208).

Hope that helps.

Sure, she'll probably like it.

Be consistant. I agree about ignoring her. Or putting her in time out for about 10 min. She bites she doesn't get to play with you. Either you leave or she goes in time out.

Barn2 is getting protective of me. He sometimes comes and stands between me and Clare when she gets too much. She stops when she sees him looking at her. While I am honoured to have him try to protect me, do I stop him from being Mummy's protector/enforcer/bouncer....lest he harm the kid?

That's going to be harder. And I'm not sure he's being protective, but more like he's jealous. She's getting attention and he's not.

I'd tell him NO! You're the alpha here not him. And do something with him alone every day that he enjoys. Playing fetch, a walk, whatever.

I am a huge Nylabone fan (not the flavored digestable ones).

Nylabone and Kong make puppy chews. I made the mistake of getting the regular red Kong for Tuck as a pup. Couldn't figure out why he didn't like as supposedly every dog loves a Kong. Then I realized they made a puppy Kong (the light blue marble color). When I got the puppy Kong he finally joined the band!

Aine loves her puppy teething kong. I cut some of her kibble in 1/2 and fill the slits with it at bed time...keeps her busy in her crate till she falls asleep. She also has and likes one of those stages things that goes in the freezer. It looks like a centipede. Those are the favorites. She does the pant leg thing too and it is very frustrating ewhen your trying to get ready for work and don't have the spare 10 minutes!!! Must get up earlier!!!"SLEEP:

Thanks all.
WHAT I HAVE DONE:
When Clare clings on to my pants as I walk or when she tries to nip my foot- I'd stop walking and that would frustrate her. It isnt fun not being able to chase a moving object. Or I's blow into her face. She hates wind on her face.
It stops her after a while. But she still tries.

I give Barn2 hugs and attention quite a bit- more so than Clare - so that he would feel he is still loved. When she goes a bit hyper- he would go near her and let out a low growl. She would behave IMMEDIATELY. I tried to mimic his growl on her but it doesnt work. She listens to him.

Will go and wash the old nylabone and give it to her after I finish my work.
Its hard to be working and caring for a pup. Am not getting enough sleep....She got up at 5am this morning. I slept at 130am and was planning to get up at 830am. Its happened the past few mornings.
Will be sending her to stay with one of her godmas (she has two) tonight...since both dad and I will be out of the house for a period of about 6 daylight hours in a stretch or more in the next two days. Hope Clare has fun with my godson Dexter (yes- Dexter's mom is Clare's godma now).

You don't even have to wash the old nylabone as they like the smells of a past dog.

Do keep an eye on any puppy product. Chester nibbled off the puppy kong. Today he chomped off the gumabone made by nylabone. He has had it for 4 months and now chomp. Luckily he smacks and I know he has something in his mouth. Thank goodness the West Paw toys arrived today. He loves the ball.

Yes... you do have to check Kongs and Nylabones regularly and toss them away. One end chewed to bits, the other end pristine?????? Go figure!

We got the best toy for the one good end nylabones. Kong makes a black bone with holes in the end to hold treats. Well a nylabone fits in there pretty good and Chester enjoys the holder. I'm getting my money worth out of the lopsided nylabones now!

Well thank God Trevor isn't the only one who will chew just one end of his Nylabone! Chews it down to a nub and won't touch the other end - at all. I have to buy him a new one. I think he like keeping the other end intact so that he can easily grasp it between his paws while chomping away???
