Ok I was impressed, the show was good. The dane was a sweetheart I loved his video diary of his trip.
The section on food was good as well.
For those who didnt see it, the holistic vet reccomended ( in this order) raw, home cooked, ultra premium canned ( little or no carb), premium canned, grain free kibble.
Those were the first ones on his list. Then goes on down, he wasnt a fan of just dry kibble especially ones that had grains in them.
His reccomendation was it was fine to add brown rice, carrotts and potatoes, etc... when given fresh along with the biggest part of their diet being meat.

My only concern was that he didnt caution people on balancing thier diet.
Dillydoodle
04-25-2007, 03:27 PM
That was one of my concerns, the other was that carrot and potato are not enough veggies, he cut them up but didnt puree them, and that what i have been reading showed different amounts of protein from 25% to 40% but the amounts he talked about looked like a lot higher than that... i wonder...
oh the Great dane was soooo cute, i loved in the video diary the lady at the hotel , shocked and says " oh my! he's a horse!" LOL that is what i was thinking when he came out... HUGE!!

I think the vet was only giving the general idea of raw and home cooking. There should have been a stmt telling people to either go with a nutrionist or holistic vet to customize your dogs diet to make sure it's 100 % balanced and complete.

It's not on over here yet, so I shouldn't have read the thread! Recording it and watching it much later probably.
Looking forward to it though. It sounds like it was a good show! :)

I agree, he should have said it has to be balanced; and dogs and cats need certain nutrients and they each have different requirements. Some people may go home and think they can just throw together any meats and veggies and think that is all they need to do.

I'm a bit shocked actually. Oprah has worked with and promoted Ceasar Milan methods extensively in the past (with the same dogs)... today no mention of him or his methods. She was all over her "new" dog trainer who seems to use much more conventional, positive reinforcement type technics.
I'm glad to see this trend... I think Ceasar has his place... but I don't think that place should be in the average dog owner's home, and most especially not with the average dog owner who would have a very difficult time getting the right "attitude" neccesary to have his methods work they way he promotes.
As for the food... yes, they should have specified that you need to work with a holistic vet to establish the correct balance of nutrients. I would love to try a raw or BARF type diet with my dogs, but I'm afraid if I upgraded the dogs diet much more at this point hubby would disown me for real LOL.
The Chihuahua just ticks me off. I'm sorry.. she may not have been trying to get the "world's smallest dog" but I can almost certainly guarantee that dog was bred by someone advertising "teacup chihuahuas". This is a huge pet peeve of mine because there are SO many health issues these dogs face because someone wants a "pocket pooch", ugh! I have personally seen people I love struggle with some of those health issues... right down to a dogs teeth uncontrollably rotting out of his head by the age of 7 or 8. He's still alive today, but has to gum all of his soft canned food, it's sad. *sigh* Okay... off my soapbox now.....

move over cheryl, i am hopping on your soap box for a minute! I am with you 100%. I am totally disgusted with people breeding to create tiny tea cup chihuahuas and miniature pinchers . Many of these miniatures are really not healthy and are genetically weak. One of the ladies i met through petloss actually has miniature pinchers and one of hers was a rescue from a less than reputable breeder of the tea cup min pins. She said that basically the brain size remains the same basic size but the skull of the tea cups is getting smaller and smaller as they breed these tiny dogs getting them smaller and smaller with each litter... once they get too tiny, they end up having brain disorders and other major issues leading to euthansia. Many of the people looking for these tea cup puppies are looking for a "paris hilton type fashion statement" rather than a dog....they want a dress up doll that is cute that they can put in a fashion purse and nothing makes me want to run up and kick someone in the shins more...
*quickly hops off the soap box, returns it to Cheryl, and runs off realizing I have said too much and sound violent!

:DAYDREAMING: I forgot....
Was watching Leah and Chloe playing and ...... they are so funny together when they are "wrasslen". Chloe makes a play growl that I never hear her use with anyone else. They roll, they run, they trash talk.... just fun to watch
I'm not surprised Cesar Milan wasn't there, he had trouble with (I think) a hollywood director or producer's dog. It got mauled or something in his doggy group. He's on his way out, I think.
I was surprised though that they didn't touch on the nutritional requirements of a raw or home cooked meal, like the others have mentioned. She made it look as if you can just throw some of your dinner in a bowl and feed it to your dog.
I loved the trainer! I'm going to try her techniques for jumping up and barking on Millie. I also reserved her book at our library, it's on order there.
Link loved the show, and thinks the best parts were the ones with dogs running around. Yes, I have a tv watching puppy!:SPINNY:

I was so glad that Oprah did not even mention him.
Yes, I too was hoping that the vet would go into more details about how important the food balance was. All in all a good show I thought, accept for touting about the difference in the two dog's sizes. And the ESS was beautiful.

I'm kind of shocked that this gal can get away with "a whole NEW and INNOVATIVE method of training". Positive reinforcement has been around a LONG time. Oh yeah, lure the dog with a treat... that's SOOO new!!
/sarcasm
Sorry, but I have a gripe with people who "recreate" what's there, call it new and Whammo! $$ and exposure on Oprah. She'll have a best seller in no time.
Turning the back is a method that's been around for a while... as well as in Clicker Training. Reward the good behavior.... treats aren't necessary. Nothing new. AND I have seen Cesar use that too.
Question, how is SPRAYING a dog, considered positive training? Yes, it works, but it's not exactly positive and then you're creating a fear for spray bottles too. I like Barbara's method better of training the bark command and the quiet command. And ACKNOWLEDGING the bark and thanking them for the alert. (as she said, they ARE dogs)
*watching show as she types* *shakes head*
Oh, and she's downing the use of a pinch collar. Calling it the "Spanish Inquisition" of collars. I may not like them, but they have their place when someone is trained to use them properly.
Barbara, I'd pay you any day for the great advice you give!! You should write a book about your experiences with all your dogs!!

You're right, Tamar's methods weren't new, to us, but I think that they must have been to Oprah.:ER:
She certainly waited long enough to start working on the dogs' training. Simple lessons like sit when they were already 3 months old, that surprised me.
Here is link that I found for Tamar Geller, I haven't read it all yet, so I have no opinion on it. If you read it, please share what you think of it. Off to read ...

I think Oprah looks at her dogs as if they are "children" and they aren't.
I think the show was a bit rushed in all that was covered and somehow I can't see myself drawing out the "sit and other commands as if I were singing:NAH:

I was taught to say it very quickly and firm, sort of spitting it out. Tamara did say it as a request rather than a command didn't she?

I believe she said "Make it fun, treat them like your family, don't be negative" and then she squirted a dog that was barking with a squirt bottle of water.
Sorry, not trying to sound cynical. Just things that strike me as odd!

That is the way I was taught, and I think you can say a command quickly and firmly, treat your dog and still be upbeat about them following your command. I do think she sounded like she was requesting them to do it.

My favorite topic being the "Salty Dog"....
Salty Dog
1 1/2 oz. Gin or Vodka
3 oz. Grapefruit Juice
Combine gin or vodka and grapefruit juice in a shaker filled with ice and shake. Salt the rim of a highball glass filled with ice and pour the drink into the highball glass.
Of course, I prefer to sugar the rim to offset the tartness of the grapefruit juice....

Now, an interesting musing: if a Corgi were a drink, what would it be....?

How about a Fluffy Butt (half peach schnapps, like a fuzzy navel, layered with Bailey's Irish Cream)? An Ear Shot? (like the Fluffy Butt in shot form; add a bit of dark rum for a tri) :TWITCHY:

Heather - Since I will be living relatively near you, we should get together and try to make the "Fuzzy Butts."
Then, when there is a gathering, we can act as bartenders. +GOOFY+

That sounds dangerous! How about we just drink the Fuzzy Butts and play Trivial Pursuit...!
