CNN Lou Dobbs Web Site has a list that shows the dog and cat foods that the manufactures says are NOT Contaminated with the Chinese Wheat Gluten outbreak we are having.

Many show lists that ARE Contaminated but it's good to compare lists and see the products that are safe too.

And here's a quote on what to do to keep your pets safe:
Poisoned Pet Food
We asked both the FDA and the American Veterinary Medical Association how pet owners can protect their animals. Here are the guidelines they recommend:

• Check pet food ingredients. Animal protein such as chicken, beef or fish should be among the first ingredients listed.

• Stay away from products that list vegetable, wheat or grain, or animal byproducts in the top ingredients.

• Make sure your pet food has an expiration date and contact information on the label.

• If your pet appears sick, take it to the veterinarian immediately.

I recently changed my pups to Nutro Ultra Adult (from Nutro Natural Choice). There is no wheat, corn, or soy in the recipe.

Linda,

The petfoodlist you provided the link to is excellent: they really did a lot of footwork contacting the various pet food companies, finding out what their connection, if any, to Menu Foods is, and who does the actual manufacture and packaging of all of their wet and dry food lines. Surprising how elusive many of the companies were with this information!

Disraeli,

The Nutro Ultra dry seemed like it was pretty good food - Trevor seemed to thrive on it. Unfortunately, I cut my ties completely with Nutro after seeing how badly they dragged their feet at the beginning of the recall. And I was furious to find out that their wet Ultra Adult was manufactured by Menu! I was giving Trevor a little of the wet ( about a Tablespoon or two) with each meal. Thank GOD I bought a whole case of wet with a date code before the tainted wheat gluten got incorporated. But, I still took him into the vets and had a full blood panel and urinalysis run, just to be sure.

We are now feeding him a combination of Natural Balance and Timberwolf for dry food, and Evangers for wet. I tell you though, I am still nervous about this whole thing and watch him and the cats for any little change in their drinking or potty habits...

As many know, Lady was diagnosed with kidney failure last year and I was feeding her a variety of canned dog foods along with the dry. The surprising thing is that since I have switched all my dogs over to Natures Recipe, Lady is a changed dog. She runs the full length of the yard, dances and prances like she used to and has put on weight. She even did the Hyland Fling the other day (you would have to see it to understand) and does her circles again. I don't see her guzzling water like she was before and she looks really good for a senior lady. Her dish is cleaned up twice a day and sometimes she will eat some of Chip & Dale's leftovers if there are any. It makes one wonder how long this has been going on.

I am glad to hear that lady is doing so well on the new food...

As far as the foods go, all the foods i feed both my dogs and cats dont have wheat, corn , or soy in them so i wasn't really as worried about the recall for my pets but i thought of the fact that if misty were still alive and i had not found the website for diabetic cats that helped me get her off that terrible hills science diet WD that she was on, that she would have been eating a product that contained the wheat gluten ( along with corn and byprodcuts) and she could have ended up like so many other cats and dogs in this country poisoned by the tained foods... it really is scarey.

I am currently feeding a combination of Timberwolf wild and natural, Timberwolf Ocean blue and Prairie Natural ( Natures Variety?) Raw Instinct and the canned food I am using is primarily Blue Buffalo Lamb and Evangers 100% meat varieties ( rabbit, duck, pheasant, buffalo). I add the yogurt and the pumpkin and now for Gus only I have been adding sweetpotato and this has been the majic mix to finally get him to put on weight... he is now 30 lbs and looking SO much better, he has muscles where he didnt before and just doesnt look like a bag of bones anymore! yippeee!!!

I was thinking about switching my kids to Canidae. However, I went with Nutro Ultra for right now - since I will be moving soon - and I won't know if I will have a ready source of Canidae.

Once we get settled, I will search out what dog foods are available in the area.

I just added Canidae to our rotation last week, so far so good.
I also rotate with Eagle pack holistic and Timberwolf.

I have switched Cody to Fromms(A Wisconsin company) and he loves it and is doing very well on it; and I am thinking of a couple of others to rotate him with. We don't have Timberwolf here yet.
I don't need to give him pumpkin as his poos are "just right"
He loves the shredded Duck Canned, but I see that their dry kibble is made here and their canned is made in China(but is says in a Human Food plant) and contains no wheat or added fillers, no by-products and no reformed meat - still has me thinking though if I should go with the Evangers canned made here in the US and Fromms dry.

I know the Fromms canned is expensive - I buy it at $2.70 a can here and I think Emilie said it was almost $3.00 a can by her. What we don't do for our pets, I guess I will have to sacrafice somewhere.

I am watching my ingredients labels closer on people food now. The wheat bread I buy has wheat gluten in it and I am just to leary of any food from China.

All this scare about wheat gluten got me to wondering about the two products I regularly get at the store. I like the "Nature's Own 100% Whole Wheat" bread I get along with Hodgson Mill Wheat Gluten for making rye bread. Neither actually tells where it's made just who it's distributed by. That doesn't necessarily mean it's made there.

according to Lou Dobbs (my hero) the US imports most of it's wheat gluten (pet & people) from China...

China says it's wheat gluten for people food comes from different plants BUT they also say the pet wheat gluten problem didn't come from them... so draw your own conclusions.
