So, the dogs always seem to chew on the cedar chips in their yard, but now they are also making like beavers down here chewing on the firewood! Geesh! Does anyone know it this is going to do anything more than increase the roughage in their diets? Maybe they have a species identity problem!

Our dogs have always chewed the wood chips that don't quite make it to the hearth. Our German shorthaired pointer will even seek out the wood carrier to see if there are left over chips in it.

And we just use good old Texas oak - nothing exotic or especially tasty!

Jemma has that species disorder - unfortunately, we don't have firewood, so it started with the legs of a 150 antique table!! She was still teething when I got her and had been in a kennel made of wood and got her taste for it there. I have only just unwrapped the legs of all of my tables and chairs in the past 2 weeks. She's almost 2 - so I HOPE she's finished!!

OM word I'm laughing as we nickname Chester the reincarnated beaver. He hasn't had the pleasure of tasting oak yet. The squirrels are making their nests and shredding the bark off the incense cedar and it is at times a pain. Chester has the strongest neck as I lift his head as we pass the cedar bark section.

We have the shorter x-pen in front of the fireplace alcove (we put in a wood stove). The smartie pushes in the pen to get that sliver of wood that dropped off from our firewood. So now I have a metal drip edge that normally goes on the fascia board outside, no in our house it goes from the hearth to the xpen so Chester can't push it in anymore. Chester gets so excited when I bring in the container of wood chips and kindling sticks hopping one drops out.

I have resorted to choosing my battles and I'd rather have him eat wood than poop!

Our home sometimes smells like menthol as we apply Vics vapor rub on the plywood subfloor. Plywood is a BIG no no with formaldehyde. But Chester doesn't understand because the first layer is wood.

Of course all paper products are at risk - cardboard, my son's flute music that flew off his stand when I rushed by, sigh. At least the flute teacher got a laugh out of the bite marks and 1/8" of the music missing. Maybe I need to invest in a laminate machine.:ARG:

Wow I really can relate to this thread. Dale has chewed the footboard of my bed, the rungs off every chair in the dining room and on and on. Bitter apple doesn't deter him and now like any big brother, he is teaching Taffy how tasty wood is. I had thought he was the only corgi with this fetish. Glad to hear he is following the norm.

Jem has been chewing her way through her babygate when she has to be kept in the kitchen. The only thing I finally found that works is wrapping the wood parts in tin foil. It works!

I got Colby to stop chewing wood when I gave him more things to chew that were tastier, AND I sprinkled cayenne powder on the things he wasn't supposed to chew.

But it took a while to figure out what worked and what didn't. He wasn't bored, but he didn't have the right kind of chew toys. In the meantime: 2 kitchen drawer fronts & numerous pieces of trim were sacrificed.

Hey, if I let him chew, do you think I'll get my new kitchen any sooner? But Honey... we don't have any drawers left!! :TWITCHY:

Deb - that is an excellent idea but Dale would chew up the aluminum foil. :ROLLEYES

Mine are the same way. They have chewed up rungs on my chairs, chewed on my end tables. They actually chewed the paneling on my wall by the front door! Knock on wood, it has been a few weeks since I've found any "new" evidence of chewing.

My molding has gotten chewed on in several places so we are putting up new molding so they can a variety. +SAD+

Ahhhh.... it's nice to find a thread where I feel right at home, I can totally relate, I feel your pain!

Maybe they have a species identity problem!

My two clearly suffer from the species identity problem too!

Moulding, table legs, chair rungs, Tuck even got a chunk out of my wood floor. When limbs fall down from the trees during a storm, Lulu hauls them out into the front yeard for all the world to see and proceeds to sit there and chew "said" limb while pleasntly watching the world go by. These limbs many times outweigh her.

It's cold here today and snowing so I am not letting Taffy out only to pee and come back inside. I tried the sweater idea and Dale proceeded to drag her all over trying to get the darn thing off so she was covered with snow and happy that her brother was helping her out of it. Anyway, she is bored and I just went looking for her and she has chewed another rung off my dining room chair and laid in a small pile of wood pieces looking perfectly content. She wasn't happy with me for cleaning up her mess.

Ahh.. we recently found the BEST doggie chew toy unknowingly. Small wooden toy building/alphabet blocks. Best of all (said sarcastically), even when we put the dogs in the kitchen, if we turn our backs Justin will hand feed them the blocks while we're distracted. I have found one block lasts a single dog about 15 minutes before completely destroyed and typically I find the splinters well worked into the carpet somewhere behind a couch *sigh*. So yeah, I have beavers also!

Here are the blocks in reference: http://www.fatbraintoys.com/toy_companies/melissa_doug/wooden_abc123_blocks.cfm

Guess I'll keep my buffet open. A little cedar in the dog yard, oak hickory and the occasional sassafras on the woodpile and be happy they're not eating the furniture! Maybe I should invite everyone for a tasting party!

What if your little beaver prefers metal, any type, from watches to the side bars of the crate?!?!?!?!?!?! Mojo did not outgrow her chewing tendencies, and I am assuming that we are through with the teething so we can't use that excuse anymore.

I feel very luck after reading of the Corgi/Beaver ID problem. Neither of mine are Beavers... Emma thinks she is either a Warthog or a Skunk but she's not a chewer. :NAH: Chloe did try to chew a little wood while she was teething but the Bitter Apple took care of that.

I do think she would have become a Beaver if left longer with her parents - I did see a dining room table that looked like it was on it's last leg :BIGGRIN"

Hahah, I tried the cayenne pepper on the fence posts in our back yard and Polly loved it! There was even more evidence of her chewing! Maybe I could just buy her a log or two and see how she likes that. Cedar sounds good, it would keep her breath nice and fresh!

Merrie - have you tried giving him the empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls for him to play with & shred? They don't last very long, but they are a really great toy - I bet he would love them. Jackie can identify the sound of a roll being taken off the paper towel holder from miles away and comes running for her prize! And it would be nice to have him shred something "approved" for once!

And it would be nice to have him shred something "approved" for once!We set the empty toilet rolls on the shelf for Chester to come and "steal". It lasts 2 minutes and the problem is we have no mess to clean up because Chester swallows the pieces:ARG: So he can only have it when we can watch every second to take the pieces.

Today I found the plywood ripped some more outside while I was busy getting all out Christmas lights off the house because of our pending storm. I told Chester how sick he could get and he looked like he listened, sigh. I told hubby it was Chester's way of telling him to replace the hole (a tree had been there) with the redwood boards and get rid of the plywood. Hubby pointed to the pending storm that will be here for his three days he is off work.

Bitter Apple - Chester licked it when it was sprayed. Anyone need the barely used bottle??

Cheryl I'm laughing about the blocks. But thank goodness Chester wasn't around when Erec had a handmade train with some cars made out of walnut. SO glad that train is on a shelf near the ceiling. Perfect place for it with Chester. Chester would like to request that not all the blocks be destroyed in case he can ever stop by for a visit. But I do see the logic I had when Erec was in a playpen and Pepper roamed around the house. It wasn't for Erec, it was to keep Pepper away from him? My memory isn't clear.

Kassie, Chester would love to attend a tasting party as he has never tried Sassafras. He prefers sticks of 1/2 inch diameter.

Susan, will Tucker need a care package of sticks as a welcome to his new home? We are expecting winds that will provide plenty of sticks.

I just thought of my Christmas reindeer that will rot in their box as they are made out of pine and have 1/2 inch stick legs, maybe I can epoxy them, or at least the legs. Time to put a call into my painter/wood finisher brother. He can tell me how to shellac.

MGM - mojo likes gold though right?, maybe her kennel needs bars of gold - hee hee.

I have some too. What's with these cardis and their warped sense of taste?

Hubby bought a bottle before Christmas to use against Mojo, but I hid the bottle and have refused to let him use it. (I'm scared that it's going to damage some fabric and/or some wood, and I know that she will lick it too, she's a licker!) I did wonder at one point if I was to spray it on myself, would that make her stop licking me, but I really do think that it would put her in hyperdrive and my skin would be licked raw. She is determined when she licks!!! She still to this day gets so excited when I get out of the shower, she just can't stand it that someone is in the house without some Mojo stink on them. I just love cleaning up and getting all fresh to go out, but last year I had to get used to putting on a little Eau de Mojo before walking out the door. It is to stop the squealing.

Pems have warped taste buds too. When maeve was getting her back teeth @ 1 the bitter apple didn't slow her a bit from eating the molding in the bedroom at night. There was a type she didn't like, I'll have to look at home to see what it was. She is no longer a chewer, except for firewood and the cedar chips.

I HAVE FOUND A SPRAY THAT WORKS... for us. :TWITCHY:

http://eqyss-online.stores.yahoo.net/mcnasanspray.html

I had bought the McNasty back when I had Corona, our Sibe Husky and that worked wonders then! As I was cleaning today, I discovered it and sprayed a bit where Colby was chewing.

VOILA!! No more wood chewing! For now anyway... we'll see as time passes whether he gets used to it or not. But if any of you are near a grange or farm & feed store, check in the horse sections for "no cribbing/chewing" sprays. That's where EQyss McNasty is shelved. It's worth a shot. :TWITCHY: (Bad pun!)

Beaver? More like Badger! Milo isn't big on chewing wood but he is a digger! He is like a little badger. When I put my fence in i'm going to enlist him to dig post holes. When I leave the house he "digs" the carpet by the front door. I suppose his goal is to dig his way out under the door. He digs with such ferocity and concentration...calling his name & giving him a squirt from the water bottle doesn't even get his attention!

Lori, I was told back when I got Pepper to not garden in front of her. She was not an obsessed digger...until she sniffed a gopher. Then we applauded her. Yes, when we wanted to dig a hole for a tree, we would tell her, get the gopher and she would start the hole for us.

Chester digs so apprehensively, the vole is 10 feet away as he has gone down an inch. So we use our shovels more now.
