View Full Version : Yay! A leash walking breakthrough!
Link was so bad on the leash again last night at puppy school. We switched dogs with other people and nobody could get him moving (so at least it's not just me). Anyway, I've been reading up on clicker training and yesterday worked with him on getting his attention. It went very well. Today I thought I'd try leash walking, but just starting with an off leash heel. Success! I had him walking all over the house (because it's pouring outside), on the leash, at my side. I don't know all the details about clicker training yet so I'm going to read up on it.

Here is where I first learned all about it. LOTS of free articles, games to play etc. I really advocate clicker training as it's a fun game while training both dog AND owner. Positive reinforcement etc.
It is a pain to keep the clicker with you at all times at first, to catch all the good stuff you do want... but totally worth it when you can connect a word or hand command to it! (although, I have been known to substitute "YES!" in absence of the clicker.... that thing moves around a lot!!)

Waiting for our competative Ob class to begin on Saturday, I stood watching the Puppy K trainer working, and hearing the click, click, but I couldn't see her using it. And that was because she was using her voice, and boy was she good at it too.
I understand that there are different types of clickers for 'soft' pups, and some people even have started out using a ball point pen for a quieter sound.
Thanks for sharing that great link! I have 3 clickers on the shelf myself.

Good job LINK!!! He will totally get it! Clicker training is quite effective, we did use clickers with Dillon when he was a pup and now when i want to train him something new i often grab the clicker. One of the things i started doing in conjunction with the clicker was to say YESSS! and that was so that if i didnt have a clicker with me and i had to mark a behavior i could use yes as a bridge word. It is about as effective as a click now for me, as when i say YESSSSSS in that certain tone and way, he immediately makes eye contact with me and waits for the possible cookie... or the not so popular pat on the head! LOL.
