View Full Version : Why would you run AWAY from food?

Ein has this little quirk where she'll grab a mouthful of kibble and either run as far away as she can, or to either me or Maria, then sit down and munch. When she's finished she'll trot back to the food bowl and grab some more and then run away. Do anyone else's dogs do this, or is our little sweetie just a bit crazy? +GOOFY+

I've heard of a lot of dogs who do this, I think she's just having fun with their food :CUTE:

It could be for fun - it could be from being with a lot of other puppies or dogs and this was the only way should could get her food.

Is it a narrow bowl with high sides? Some cats will eat their food on the floor or away from the bowl and the school of thought is they don't like their whiskers touching the sides of the bowl and prefer it served on a flatter platter - as it were. :BIGGRIN"

I think Deb hit it, Miss Gambler eats as you describe, and always has, when over her bowl, which is rather big and deep. She will not eat or chew over the bowl. Now when she eats out of her flat dish, which is used when she gets people food, she doesn't do this at all. Try something flat a couple of times, you will probably see this yourself.

I'm thinking its because she likes the company. If we sit next to the bowl and pat her all the while, she's more than content to sit right in front of the bowl and chow down. The bowl isn't anything special, its a normal small bowl from our cabinet, we use the same type for water which she doesn't seem to mind (not that she could really take the water if she wanted to).

My Mom's late border collie, Kate, liked to take bits of kibble in her mouth - take them to the dark living room - then eat them. Then come back and eat normally - or repeat the process.

So it's quirky, but not bizarre or highly unusual. There's undoubtedly a rationale behind it.

Wow Deb! I did not know that. I'm going to have to try a platter for my kitties now as they do the "pull kibble out, run, spit out, eat" maneuver too.

Sooty will do this- not with his main meal as he knows that if he leaves it Cindy will have sneaked in and pinched it, but with any treat he will always do this- the way he reacts suggests it's a game with him.

Tucker and Lulu might actually drop a morsel of food and not eat it if they tried Ein's method. My two Hoovers never move from their dish until it is empty.

Growing up we had a cat that would do that and I too swear ot was for the company. He took the food wherever the family was.

HAHA!! Not only would our old Husky do the same thing with his kibble; sometimes he'd flip bits of it in the air and catch it before eating!

Now Trevor is the same as Susan's two Hoovers. He doesn't budge an inch until his dish has been licked clean.

And Cindy will not budge either and licks both her and Sooty's dish, walks away and then goes back and licks both dishes again

One of my puppies from my first litter (way back when) used to do this. Melody would get a mouthful of food, come to the door way, and stand there to eat it.

I solved the problem by feeding my dogs in their crates.

Zip and Zeke won't leave their food bowls. (Actually Zeke just found out he's a corgi, he used to rather be outside than eat; now he scarfs and then runs outside). Zia will take a mouthful of food, bring it into the living room, spit it out on the carpet, and then eat it if I am in the living room. If I'm in the kitchen, she stays at her bowl.

Jackie stays at her food bowl until it's clean also. But she does sometimes like to walk away from her water bowl with a mouthful . . . leaving a soggy trail behind her as it trickles out!

Miss Gambler does that with her water, grabs a mouthful, then turns away, or walks away, to swallow it, and most of it pours out. Water has to be cleaned from her bowl area several times a day. She's a water slob! (And Heather, guess this proved that they can take water with them, LOL!)

I can remember hoping for that when Miss G was a puppy. I hope for your sake that Danny outgrows it, but go ahead and invest in paper towels, just in case, lol. (Hubby has threatened more than once to go to the rabbit type water bottles. He doesn't tolerate slobbery well, and he's also the type of person who if they can't understand something, or can't stop or change something, it drives them nuts. Four years of Miss G doing this and he still complains, you would think the man would be used to it by now, I am. Men!)

I buy 'Choose a Size" paper towels by the case.

I was thinking about one of those bottles, but right now at least whilte Danny is teething......that makes quite a picture!

My two lick their bowls clean. Then Rhys goes and licks Andy's bowl clean (cleaner??). Then Andy goes back in the kitchen to do the same to Rhys's.

As if, by some chance, one of them is NOT going to clean their bowl the first time!

Now that I think about it, we had a thread on here not that long ago, and I'm remembering either Peggy or Merrie mentioning the rabbit style water bottles, with the metal tips. I think it got a positive rating/suggestion from Peggy and/or Merrie. And yes, with a chewer(Mojo)I would also wonder about that, and Mojo chews on metal, but she isn't normal, maybe that's why the bottle would work, typically, they wouldn't chew on the metal. I know Merrie's chester is a chewer also, so I wonder if our three could demolish one of those bottles. (But just thinking of the flood that would occur if the tip is broken or pulled off may be enough to keep me from giving it a try.)

There's hope for Danny. Link used to make a huge mess at the water bowl. Millie would try to tiptoe around all the puddles if she was unlucky enough to be thirsty after he watered himself. He would also fill up his mouth and slosh a big path to wherever he was going. What a pig. The good news is that he hardly does this at all anymore.:NOTWORTHY:

 Guess it's funny to me because I didn't have to clean up the flood trail.

And I'm glad to hear that there is hope that it is something that can be grown out of.

I had a cat that sometimes would grab a mouthfull of kibble and then put it on the floor and eat it off the floor..

The corgis however, no way... they both make such a fuss when it is feeding time, i put the bowls on the floor and give the "OK" command and once they start eating, there is no stopping and they must eat as fast as they can, it is a race, you know  Then they spend as long licking their bowls as they did actually eating food. I never let them go to the other's bowl - i just dont want them to get in that habit - i pick up the bowls right after.

Funny, my husband came home from work early the other night after i had put down their bowls... normally, they run to see him, arrooo, bark, and jump all over him... well, neither one looked up from their bowls...Gus said nothing, Dillon managed one lame attempt at a muffled bark with his mouth FULL of food! He ate his food super fast and once the bowl was empty he ran to greet my hubby ...with a big BURP!

Delta,

I used to hang a rabbit bottle with metal tip in Trevor's crate, and also his x-pen, when he was younger and in his "chewing" stage. It held up just fine. I think that he did try to bite on the tip once or twice, but quickly realized that the metal didn't feel/taste good, so nothing more came of it.

(Hubby has threatened more than once to go to the rabbit type water bottles.

It's not such a bad idea. I had a girl who loved to play in water bowls. Well, when I bred her I sure didn't want her splashing in the water bowl in the puppy pen. I got her a water bottle. She learned to use it and then her puppies learned to use it from watching her. From then on I've used water bottles in my puppy pens. The puppies don't get wet falling in the bowls, the pen stays drier and I'm much happier.

Yes, they can be damaged by chewing, but so far none of mine have chewed a tip off. What happens is that they chew on the tip, and it gets bent, then it won't work any more. So you take that bottle away and get a new one. It doesn't flood the floor. At worst so far is that an old one will start to leak/drip. Again, noticeable and you replace it.

Ein may grow out of her eating style. Chester did. He would stop and spit out what was in his mouth if we left the kitchen. So in the beginning we stayed there. Then eventually I would wait until he had eaten some and leave the room. Now the lure of food keeps him at his dish until he has inhaled his food. He doesn't want to miss what is going on outside the kitchen so he eats faster.

Chester still hasn't gotten the hang of the hamster waterer. I got the type with the metal "stick" stopper instead of the metal ball stopper. I think the ball would have been better. Instead I'm the one who leans against the waterer and ends up with a wet spot on my shirt.

I noticed that Danny's eating habits changed as soon as he came home form his overnight stay at the Vet's. Most likely because he was with other dogs and was not sure if he had to eat his food before they might get it. Before that he 'mucked around' quite a bit, guess he knew that I wouldn't let Monty or Dylan eat his portion.

I've heard cases where pups had very bad eating habits, stayed a night or two with other dogs and then began to eat all their food when it was given to them.

Oh my word, I wonder if Chester changed when Erec was trying to work with him on possessiveness with food! So Erec was the other "dog" in this scenario. We changed to just be happy that Chester allows us to pet him when eating. Once in awhile I need to reposition his body when eating (I have to get something out of the broiler) and now Chester is find as he is glued to the dish.
