well, here is what i have done---I am only using homecooked to suppliment the kibble, so they are getting the amount they would have gotten with canned food, DIllon is fine on it, no issues, no change, he loves it... Gus, on the other hand, is not quite as good, he loves the food, but i think the lamb is too rich and fatty for him the way i made it ( remember he was eating lamb canned dog food before , so I was sticking to the same protein source to minimize any tummy issues). Not to be too graphic, but you asked lol, his first morning poop is usually solid, but when we go for our walk later in the morning, his poops have been increasingly softer to the point of difficult to pick up, not full fledged diarrhea but not normal... I am trying to give it time, but so far, not seeing improvement.

Worst case scenario, i will go back to canned ,but it will be canidae as all their ingredients are grown in the USA, manufactured in the USA...and that they dont do rice or wheat gluten in their foods, so they are a possiblity if i cant get gus to "regulate" on the home cooked foods..

Thanks for asking, hope i didnt give too much detail that no one wanted to hear!

Emilie,

Glad to hear your boys are liking your cooking - maybe Gus justs needs a little more time to adjust.

Last night I cooked up a small batch of chicken breast and rice for everybody, and fed it to all three of them this morning. As expected, Trevor finished his in no time, and the cats were a bit more hesitant. BUT, they did eat a little right off the bat, then I picked up and refridgerated what was left in their bowls, headed out biking this morning, came back, put their bowls back down, and they ate some more! More success than I'd hoped for!

Because I wasn't sure how they'd like the recipes, I didn't bother with supplements for this first feeding. Now I'm feeling a bit more confident that they'll all eat, so I'm headed out right now for bonemeal powder and pet vitamins. I would also like to find a kibble that I actually trust completely and just supplement my cooking in place of the canned. After reading the latest headlines at itchmo, I'm not sure that there's ANY safe food left - for us or our pets!

No Em not to graphic at all. I hope Gus's poop firm up and you can continue on this path. I know you must feel better knowing whats in is home cooked meal as opposed to canned food.

Monty and Dylan both ate a lamb based kibble when they were younger, but it put too much weight on them. I've never cooked them lamb, but I do boil extra lean hamburger & poached chicken breasts for them.

It is satistying to cook for our dogs isn't it?

And about the graphic dog poop, after the morning one, and Dylan goes on a walk and does another one that is quite soft, we just say that "that one wasn't ready yet!"

Sort of like an imature wine.

And ...well if anyone feels like starting a poop thread, I've got some very 'good' descriptions to post about.:TWITCHY:

Debbi, I am glad you had some success with the cats, I do know how hard it can be to change foods on them!

Oh barbara, we say the same thing about it not being "done yet" LOL!! too funny.. In this case, it wasn't that it was not quite done yet, lets just say, rice pudding..

Tonight Gus's poop seemed more firm, so we are moving ( haha, no pun intended) in the right direction!

Anyone who's had kids has some great baby poop stories....

Like the time I went out for Thai with my daughter who was 3 mos old... and I was having some phad thai, peanut sauce and all when my friend asks, "did you spill peanut sauce down your front??" *Grace looks down* *mortified* Then the most wet funny noise ever comes from my little bundle and MORE "peanut sauce" down my front....

Emillie,

maybe a little pumpkin added to Gus' food might do the trick...

Tdeb, great suggestion... he already gets pumpkin in each meal. it is probably what is keeping him from having the runs.
Currently he is eating timberwolf dry food (ocean blue and wild and natural, the home cooked lamb, rice, veggie puree mix, mixed with cooked sweetpotato, pumpkin, organic low fat plain yogurt, and supplements, salmon oil and for gus, his daily meds for his pemphigus (morning meal only)

Mrs Grace... ewwww!!! That has to be the worst! I dont have human kids so I can't even imagine it...

It is off to a start but not sure it is good! LOL , Dillon is fine but Gus is still really not good... i am going to have to switch him off the home cooked part and get him on the canidae... first off , he is super gassy... STINKY... so bad it is peeling the paint off the walls here! secondly we are just not seeing solid poops... still as soft, if not softer...so to me that means his body is just not processing it well.. I think i better get him back to the canidae or wellness ( both of which are not on the recall, and both he can digest well). I would let it ride longer if it were DIllon because he is healthy in every other way, but with Gus, his pemphigus is so out of control right now , and he is on the highest dose of steriod that i can do right now and on the immunosupressant as well and for every sore that heals, a new one erupts- he has another month yes MONTH to wait to go see the Board Certified Veterinary Dermatologist for her to maybe switch meds or do something to help him... in the mean time, I dont want him to be uncomfortable in other ways....

I switched Gus back yesterday - what i had in the pantry was Wellness lamb and sweetpotato - and this morning, normal poop! so it is clear to me he cannot handle the homecooked lamb- I wonder if they prepare the lamb differently or get a less fatty cut or what? I made it on the grill, so the excess fat would drip off and used shoulder cut... hmmm oh well, i will stick to wellness and canidae for now with him, Dillon gets to eat the rest of the batch of homecooked that i made... he loves it and is doing well on it, no potty issues whatsoever...which is the funniest seeing as he used to be my tendertummy boy... thus one of his nicknames, souper pooper (operative word being soup) !!

I had to puree Pepper's rice because her system was starting to not digest. She got so she'd head to the kitchen when she heard the machine go.
