View Full Version : Ever Heard of a Broken Coated Corgi

Saturday Zack went to the vet. In the course of the appointment, she mentioned that Zack was neither a fluffy nor a regular coated corgi. Instead he is a "broken coated" corgi. Do any of you know what that means? He has more hair than any dog I've ever known and its longer than Zoey's. But he doesn't look anything like Their Fluffinesses, Jackie and Colby.

They are either fluff or not. Pems have a genetic test for it as well as cardigans. And yes there can be various degrees of fluffness-just ask Finch da Superfluff. But no, there is no broken coat so to speak of. A normal coat can have a fuller appearance or lots and lots of undercoat-our Fred is like that. Then there is the term used by some breeders for a heavy coat that isn't quite degree of fluffness that you would assume with a fluffy-calling it a glamour coat in cardigans.
Hope that helps-maybe, it's Monday and I've been up since 4:00.

With all due respect to the vet, :NAH: Zack has a normal coat. He may be a little closer coated than some of the show dogs; but he's got a regular coat. When I think of broken coats, I think of terriers.

Exactly with the terrier comment. I am still alittle sleepy from the early morning.
IE-broken coats-at least to me or how it was always explained to me, in terriers happens when it's clipped rather then hand stripped and the texture of the coat gets soft. Terriers should have a harsh, wiry weather resistant coat.

In this case broken is referring to a type of coat texture.

Thanks everyone for your comments! I wondered if my vet really knew anything about Corgi coats. I certainly hope she knows more about Corgi pasterns! Although that may be why she referred me to the Ortho Vet!

Coats can be breed specific. Pasterns usually aren't. Most breeds are supposed to have straight, strong pasterns. (Not GSD's however.)
