View Full Version : Is your Corgi a Shark with his stuffies?

I don't think that Montrose ever completely unstuffed a toy in her life. Nor has Dyaln, not even during his puppyhood.
But Danny!! Our family room looks like a perpetual snowfall area. Thank goodness for the Dollar Store or I'l be broke. He shreds stuffed toys in a matter of a few short minutes. He digs out the plastic squeaker, spits it out for he and I to do The Trade, one "Out" for a treat, and then back he goes to it. I've tried toys without a squeaker thinking that is what was spurring him on to 'kill' all the toys but it made no difference.
Now at almost 9 months I can say that it's not part of the teething process, and I'm really hoping that this is something that he will outgrow.
Is your corgi a Shark with his/her toys? Did he/she outgrow it?
Is it boredom? Is there a way to train him Not to do this?

Good luck - at our house - once a shark, always a shark!!
Rupe loves to get the noise maker out and then destuff to his hearts content!
My new trick is to take larger destuffed toys and fill them with smaller stuffed toys. He thinks it's restuffed and then loves that all kinds of little toys come out! It's like presents and it makes less mess!

Great idea, Deb! Aine is worse than Maeve. Once a weakspot is found it's curtains for the stuffie. They have never disected a hedgehog of a lambie, but must others they have. I have tried repairing a few favorites. One night they unstuffed a dog bed while we slept...talk about a blizzard!:BIGLAUGH:

Ein does the same thing. She'll make a precise incision along a seam every time and then use her incredibly long tongue to pull out all of the stuffing. LOL it ends up everywhere!

we are mad-unstuffers here too...i just found a toy like what Deb was talking about...i'll try to go back and post up the link for you...i was hoping it would help with colby too...more like a game to get the "insides" out...i'll let you know if i decide to order it
heres the link to the toy with the surprises inside:

we also got another toy, i forget the name but its like Skinnees or something, its meant to look like a rabbit skin- no stuffing...colby and cammie like it...they play tug o war with it...i'll see if i can find the link for that one too....

Trevor was a shark from the beginning!
Like Aine and Ein, he goes right for the jugular (the seam.) Once he's "in", it's all over for the stuffie!

haha! my guys are all toy killers...stuffed toys are just "pelts" in a few minutes...I used to sew up the toy a few times before giving up- now I just help them destuff and they play with the pelt forever until it wears out (or gets torn up)
Corgis are not easy on toys that is for sure!

That's a cool idea that they make them "just the pelt" these days. My two are hopeless chewers, I end up with white fluff from one end of the house to the other.

Toby is not so bad with stuffed toys, although a few have met their end. His weakness is killing his frisbee. They only tend to last for a few throws before he stands on one side and rips it in half. Since they are only a buck, I get him a few so we have something to play with. This is how he earned the nickname of Dr Destucto.

Funny...as I was reading the board, I looked over at Andy who non-chalantly stopped destroying a stuffie long enough to look at me with her big brown, inquisitive eyes...a little piece of stuffing hanging off her lip.
I actually thought I had pulled most of the stuffing out of that "pelt", but apparently not.

Well, It sounds like my little guy is in the minority here, because he's never destuffed a toy. He's had a couple that have come unsewn, but mostly that's a quality issue. He plays hard with his toys, throwing them and shaking them and chewing them and then finally using them as a pillow. lol In fact, he's had the same hedgie since the beginning. Jax is a different little guy....lol

Both of mine LOVE to rip their stuffed animals to shreds. Tuck, I'd attribute to still being a pup but in actuality, his 5 y/o mom, Abbie, is MUCH more apt to de-stuff the toys!!
The fluff is everywhere, I just try to keep it picked up as much as possible as they seem to take such pleasure in doing it..

we thought colby would grow out of it too but no such luck....although he does have an original hedgie too which he covets...pretty much the only toy that is "his"...she rest are share and share alike..i think my favorite un stuffing was the "10 minute mallard"...jamie was ******!!! he spent like 12~15? on it!!! he even wrote to the company and told them it was poorly made...to no avail....i thought it was a riot!! I can be so mean sometimes...but he gives it rght back...with every pair of footwear (we're up to 22 now!) he just smirks and says, "i have no sympathy for you!!"...meanwhile, Colbs and Cam are the ones having all the fun....

Fisher is a shark too! He surgically removes the squeaker then he disembowls them. I guess his name fits him more than I thought! Fishy!!!!

Carter goes right for the seam too!! He seems to really love getting his mouth on stuffed toys, but they certainly do not last long.

Nah, I've got some that don't destuff toys. Merlin loves stuffed toys and doesn't tear them up. Lacy's got an alligator she's had for ages and he's fine too. Ladybug on the other hand, well, even at age 12, she rips the stuffing out of every toy she can get her teeth on.
Just depends on the dog.

Well, Delilah, the stuffinator, found one of my couch cushions today. ***SIGH*** I know it was her because the same cushion had been around Peanut and Bugsy for the last year and was in great condition when it arrived.
The dogs had been doing so well - not locked up - while I was at work that I left the gate open yesterday and today. Yesterday was great! Came home - house in almost perfect condition - no accidents and nothing destroyed. Today *sigh* was the cushion. Not only had she chewed a hole in one side and pulled about 1/3 of the stuffing out all over the living room, but then one of the boys decided to annoint her offering......:ARG: I am going to wash it (REALLY GOOD!) and find a new cord for the ends. Have already restuffed it. (It is a bolster pillow with ties on each side.) Then put it in the guest room.

As Chester aged he got worse. With his puppy teeth it took a while to destuff. Now he not only destuffs, he will eat the stuff!!! So he can't have it as most have the polyester fine thread stuffing. I was thrilled when I found an old cotton stuffed monkey...until the face was removed.
By the way, the squeaker is handy to have in an emergency. One squeak and the dog's attention will be on you.
Our last corgi did no destruction, had nylabones that lasted 10 years. Now I have to find the post that had the company that makes better than nylabones.

No stuffie is safe with Jinjo if it squeeks! I have found something "proof" From him though! I call it a bat. I took an old squeeker and sewn it between 4 layers of polor fleece in a half oval shape! I'll show you later as a storm is brewing outside right now.

*sigh* Ada used to be so good with stuffies, but once she hit adulthood she decided to wage war upon the stuffies. We have to put them upl, and Ada has to be crated when the dobes want to play with the stuffies... it's so sad! :)

The Girls never destroy their toys... Emma hoards her favorites behind Hubbys chair - Chloe steals them from Emma's stash, taunts Emma to chase her for them then when Em gives her the cold shoulder just drops the toy and walks away. Emma waits till the coast is clear and rescues her toy and returns it behind the chair...

How funny! Mine do the EXACT same thing. Millie's the hider (horder) and Link is the taunter - too funny! Whenever we can't find any toys to play with we look behind the chair in my office - JACKPOT!!!

Daisy only destroys toys. . .when we're looking. She is alone with her toy box all day and never touches one of them.
It must have been an attention thing. She's gotten so much better as an adult. Toys last much longer.

Regis = toy killer. I can't really buy him toys anymore because I look down a minute later and they are all over the floor! The only one he hasn't chewed up is his Kong.. I go to pet stores and they are like "he won't be able to chew through this one" spend $15 and he tears it up in a span of 20 minutes or less. *sigh*

I only called them a 'shark' when it came to food. I tell everyone to watch out for their fingers.

we went to petsmart about a week ago and beaker got attached to one of those long blue dogs with the squeakers in it, within a few hours he had it ripped apart, and the next day it was completely demolished.
when we first got him I gave him a purple fuzzy hippo and he loves that thing, all the stuffing is gone out of it but he carries it around the house, it goes wherever he goes.
I have pictures of him snuggling with it while he's sleeping that i'll have to put up

Those long body toys are called Bobos - mine love them, but they don't tend to destuff them as much as they do other stuffies.
Looking forward to seeing him with his toy.

Although Annie LOVES stuffies, she can't have them as she disembowels them within the first 30 minutes. I love to see her with the squeekies, but, its just too expensive to keep buying them.
Right now she is working on a tough Kong that my husband had to work on (of course she had found some of the rubber to start picking at)...

Yes, it's amazing how fast a puppy can teach us to put our clothes and shoes away! My first Corgi, Riley chewed the arms on my glasses and all my phones. I guess because they smelled like me. A little expensive to say the least!

Gizmo likes my socks... the dirty ones that I miss or drop out of my think. He just picks them up. But he won't pick them up out of a pile of clothes. Just if its one lone sock.
Also, stuffies haven't been a problem, its been the bones, like rawhide. He gets them down to one piece about the size of the palm of my hand, and its all soft and chewy, and then poof its gone and I'm like  Gizmo where'd it go? And (this is the funny part) he looks around like he dropped it or something.
Gizmo's favorite toy right now
http://www.nylabone.com/products/puppy/puppy-teething-keys174.htm
He was super sad when his step brother (a pitbull) tore them up and he saw me put them in the trash, we went to petsmart today to get more and he saw me pick them up and he just looked oh so happy and he tried to go out the store without paying. And the guy didn't seem to happy when I let Gizmo walk out with his new toy after we had paid.

Both my boys were/are toy killers. I had hope that Cody would not be one, but as he's gotten older (9.5 months), he's gotten faster and crazier. He did win two squeaky blue lambs at the dog show and they're still here almost a month later. Now I just pick up the white stuff and let him play with the pelt. Pelts last a long time. We still have the two original lambs, the octupus, the red turtle...

Mine are de-stuffers! Trixie gets the hole started and works on the toy for a while. Then when she goes to get a drink Murphey steals the toy and works on the stuffing more.
When I see 'indestructible' toys at the store I just think that's supposed to be a challenge, bu its no challenge to a corgi :BIGGRIN"
sugar_corgi
06-14-2009, 08:08 PM
Sugar is a crazy shark when it comes to toys. And not just stuffed toys, but any toys. She always rips out the squeaky thing, then unstuffs it. After all the stuffing is out, she goes for the tag (not the price tag, the tag that tells you how to wash it and stuff). When Sugar was younger, she also bit the tail off a plastic crocodile. And then ate it. (it was really small, so it was fine)
Now we don't really give her anymore stuffed animals, so we don't have to keep buying her new toys just to clean the stuffings up a day or two later. Although she has this one stuffed reindeer that she seems very fond of. She's had it for a looong time now and hasn't ripped it up. Maybe she grew out of it, or maybe she just loves that toy too much to destroy it.
I guess as a natural instinct, dogs like to rip things up, especially if they're in the shape of an animal, since wolves do it with their kill.

i had to chime in on this thread!
Cooper destroys stuffies in short order. He has a ball pulling out the stuffing to get to the prize, the squeaker. He is 4 1/2 yrs old at this point and would still destroy stuffies. We do not buy them anymore, mostly for fear of his swallowing the squeaker.
He only gets the dense rubber toys now, like those made by Ruff dog. Cooper got the octopus for Christmas. It is one of his favorites. He started immediately working on chewing of the the legs on the bottom of the octopus so we cut them off and it is now a "safe' toy for him. His newest toy is the Cuz. I got him a large one and the legs are too short, and the toy too big for him to get a good "chew position" or the legs would be history!
Cooper loves to steal my undies, bras and socks out of the laundry piles waiting for a turn in the machine. He also will take anyone's shoes and drag them around to various parts of the downstairs. Fortunately he does this for attention now and will drop a shoe on command so we can retrieve it without incurring some "teeth" and a pen time out!(him, not me!)
