View Full Version : Blaze and his eye

I took Blaze to the Eye Clinic For Animals today to have his eye checked. A couple weeks ago it was bleeding in the eye itself. We've been treating it but it's not getting better so...
Well, he has a tumor in the eye and will have to have that eye removed. I was devestated so did not remember what type of tumor it is.
He'll go in Wed. for the surgery.

Oh, Peggy, I'm so sorry. How old is Blaze? Are you going to do a prosthetic eye like Ellen's Boo has? Jack doesn't have one, not even the kind under the sewn-shut eye. He manages just fine without the eye, but of course it looks better if they have a prosthesis.

Blaze is 5. I don't know about that yet, I thought I'd write Ellen and ask about it. The vet didn't think it would work with him. Says the orbit is too streached from the tumor. It's grown quite a bit in the last few days. Which is why I took him in, the eyeball is obviously bigger and protruding.
I think they're susposed to put one under the sewn shut eyelids though.

Jack was younger when he lost his but almost a year old and it doesn't phase him a bit except that we've had a hard time teaching weave poles. I forget most of the time that he is missing an eye. Of course, his was an injury so no concern about further problems... I hope the tumor is benign. It sounds like it is contained.
The one under the eyelids does help with a normal look. Jack lucked out and looks pretty normal anyway, just like his eye is closed. Some dogs do end up with a sunken eye look without it.

He injured his eye some time last year, I've known he's had a detached retnia and blind in that eye for over a year now. So he won't have to adjust to that. It's me that will have to adjust. He's such a pretty boy and one of my special dogs, so I'm having a hard time with this. My first concern of course is his health and they did say that eye tumors are usually benign, so hopefully that will be the case. This is bad enough as it is. I'm sure he'll handle it all much better than I will.
It was just such a shock. I was thinking we needed a different treatment. I just didn't expect this.

Is Blaze your cardi?
I'm in shock, never knowing there could be eye tumors. Is it thought that the injury triggered this?
He'll still be your special boy and you'll just take profile photos more often.
We'll say an extra prayer on Weds.
Hope the cost is manageable.
Peggy I'm so sorry to hear this, it hits close to home after thinking we had an eye problem here.

I'm so sorry to hear about Blaze Peggy. I know of 2 dogs who lost their eyes to tumours, one that had the eye sewn shut and the other that was just left alone. The dogs do just fine, it's the people who have to deal with their emotions. It will take a while, but you will get used to the way he will look and he will always be beautiful to you.
Hugs to you and Blaze. +FUZZHUG+

I am so very sorry to hear about Blaze, but somewhat relieved that the odds are in his favor for a benign tumor. Are eye tumors common in corgis? What do you watch for?
Hugs to you both,

Is Blaze your cardi?
Blaze is a Pembroke. (Cassidy is the Cardi).
I'm in shock, never knowing there could be eye tumors. Is it thought that the injury triggered this?
I was in such a state of shock yesterday that I didn't ask. We were all under the impression that an injury caused the retina to detach. Now I'm wondering if the tumor did it and has been there but small for all this time. And started to grow quickly and caused this problem. Or if the detachted retnia is the cause of the tumor. I haven't called yet to see if the vet has a answer. Could be we'll never know.
He'll still be your special boy and you'll just take profile photos more often.
Yeah, I know. Still I hurt for him. He's lucky he doesn't know he's having surgery soon. It's me doing all the worrying.
Hope the cost is manageable.
Not really. It'll be about $1,000. But we'll get through it. We've applied for Care Credit so can make payments on it.

[B][COLOR="Blue"]Are eye tumors common in corgis? What do you watch for?
No they're not. In 28 years and many dogs, this is the first one I've had with a tumor or detached retnia.
I've seen a few cataracts, old age ones mostly in my dogs.

Blaze is out of surgery, waking up and doing well. He can come home this afternoon.
The vet said that the eye definately needed to come out, was not going to get better. He couldn't see a tumor due to so much blood in the eye, it was still bleeding into the eye. He's sending it off to the lab to be checked but doesn't think it was cancerous.
Thanks so much for all the good thoughts!
Peggy

How long is the wait for lab results? Hope you are doing okay and Blaze is recovering.
Does anyone get the Sit Stay newsletter? It came yesterday, what a coincidence that one of their dogs had surgery for an eye tumor this week. They are also hoping for good lab results.

Huh, I do get the newsletter but hadn't read it yet.
Interesting that the vet in the article said these types of tumors are common in dogs, and that they just "happen."

Oh Peggy,
I just read about Blaze. Sounded like retinoblastoma when I first read about it. I hope it is a benign tumor. I know it must be sad to think that your beautiful boy will look different. Two different horses I knew had eye injuries that caused them to lose their eyes. One had her eye sewn shut and the other didn't. Both learned to compensate fine, as you say Blaze has. At first it was weird to look at the one-eyed mares, but the cool thing was they didn't know they looked different. Just like Liam doesn't know he has terminal cancer. Our animals have no vanity and don't feel sorry for themselves. How wonderful for them!

Blaze's vet just called us. The tumor in his eye was cancerous but contained within the eye ball. He is fine and should stay that way. He'll tell me more when I take him in next week for the recheck and stitch removal.
