Hi everyone!!! I just joined this forum today!! When I posted a "hello" another forum member asked me to share my story about my Dachshund, Jackson Browne.

He started showing signs of pain about three months ago. We took him to the vet, and they thought that his back was injured. We kept him resting, and gave him medications...Prednisone & a muscle relaxer. He seemed to get better. A month ago, he was having pain again...this time it was much worse, he was also having some paralysis. We took him back to the vet and went through the process of crate rest and medications. It didn't help this time, and he was in excrutiating pain. He would cry out in pain. The vet talked to us about surgery, but we didn't want to put him through it if his quality if life wasn't good. We decided that it would be better to have him pts rather then subject him to all of this. Last Tuesday, we were scheduled to have him pts in the afternoon. Monday night was one of the hardest nights of my life...I thought it was out last night together. I really prayed for help...a sign to let me know if I were doing the right thing. Tuesday morning when I got up, there was a sparkle in JB's eyes, his tail was wagging again & he was a little perky. I called my husband, and we scheduled an appt with a neurosurgeon on Wednesday to get a second opinion...he said that he thought he would be a great candidate for surgery. He was operated on Thursday and is now home recovering.

How emotionally draining for you. They do have a way of perking up just when you think the end is near, until the end is really there.

Glad the surgery went well.

He is so precious. Reminds me of the doxie I grew up with when I was elementary school age.

There is something about these little creatures we get attached to - they can sometimes communicate very important things to us at the most opportune times. Good for you for listening to him and getting a 2nd opinion!!

I hope you all have a lot more time together with sparkling eyes and wagging tails!

Isn't that so true!!! He had been so bad for several days before that...it was truly a miracle that he perked up!! I just couldn't take him to the vet to be pts when his tail was wagging and his eyes were so shiny & bright. It was truly a miracle and the answer to my question "am I doing the right thing"?

oh my goodness... That must have been such a hard time. Decisions like that are so hard - we want to do the right thing for our furbabies. I am so glad he was able to give you a sign and that you got that second opinion and surgery. He is a very handsome boy ( I am so partial to the red doxies! and he has the most soulful eyes!)

I posted to this yesterday, but mine disappeared as well (probably because of the move).

I'm so glad that this story had a happy ending! I was ready to reach for the tissues! JB is so lucky (and so are you) that you didn't give up on him.
