She looks so proud - congratulations to all! Sadie's one and only litter was six...5 girls and 1 boy. Is there any rhyme or reason to the gender distribution in a litter?

First Congratulations on the new babies Petra!!

Is there any rhyme or reason to the gender distribution in a litter?

Generally no, it's just what Mother Nature decides you get.

Beautiful pups! I've never seen cardi pups before. Their fur is so different from pembroke puppy fur. Will they stay pretty much the color they are, or will some become more brindle as they get older?

I've not yet had a litter of Cardis, but have had several Pem litters. And well, I just have to ask, what makes you say their fur is so different?

In Petra's pictures, the puppy's fur looks short and shiny. Pembroke puppies I've seen had fluffy gray fur and it changed to red & white, red headed, black headed, or whatever their "forever" coloring would be as they got a little older.

Do pups care which teat? I just noticed they "lined up" differently in the two photos.

Brindles can be hard to determine right away on cardi's especially if they are like Chester's mom who is a black brindle which doesn't show up in photos.

Here is the thread showing Chester at day one - easy to spot, the LARGE one

http://www.cool2bcorgi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190

This thread shows 6 weeks old to see how dark the brindles can start out compared to later.
http://www.cool2bcorgi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=541

But I noticed some Pembrokes face coloring changes so much I don't recognize who is who from puppy to adult photos. So here is my question, are there brindle pembrokes?

Good grief, Merrie! Chester looks like a guinea pig next to hamsters in those first pictures! :BIGLAUGH:

I think a brindle Pembroke would be a fault (if ones exist). I thought only the traditional tris and red/whites were allowed.

Petra, it is good that you live so far away and airfare is high so no temptation for me. The puppies will be gorgeous like mom, I'm sure. We'll enjoy future photos to give us puppy fixes.

Yes, we all seek higher knowlege of puppies! Purely academic! So cute, and mommy looks great! Will they all stay that dark, or will they lighten up?

Congratulations!

It's just the color that is different. And remember that in one picture the puppies were very new, only an hour after the last one was born. They hadn't dried completely.

Sable and most red Pembroke puppies have that grayish cast to them as puppies. The tris (both types of tris look alike at birth) don't. They're black and shiny like these puppies. These puppies will be fluffier once they're dry and a few days older.

It's just the age and color here that is different. Both corgi breeds have the same type fur.

Nope they don't.

So here is my question, are there brindle pembrokes?

No there aren't. No blue merles either. Pembrokes can be red, sable, red headed tri or black headed tri.

I, for one, know that I definitely require further education as to the cultural differences in Cardigan puppy development between the United States and Sweden.

And, um, are any of those brindles available for a "foreign exchange program"!?!?! Because if five is just too many to handle I could generously relieve you by taking one off your hands, Petra

So darling! I love watching the little ones grow! So, where does the short tail come from? Just curious.

Short tailed puppies are sometimes born in all diffrent breeds (so it does not have anything to do with Pembroke).

A breeder of German Shepherds got it in one of her litters too..

Yes it stops him from becoming a showdog and he is not for breeding. His short tail also is how do you say? "crooked at the tip of the tail.

But he is a cute and will go to a good home where the will take him to obidient training

Hihi:))
One of the boys will stay with us at Fromax. The girl will go to the southern part of Sweden, that family has a five year old Cardigan girl already. They want to use Arwen for dog shows and breeding

Two of the boys will go not far away from us, one will go to shows and the one with the short tail will be used in obidence.

So we still have one unsold/unspoken for boy :CUTE:

I love the little trilling sound in the puppy howls! And who is the brave soul trying the solid food first? That one little guy looked like he understood immediately what to do! +CLAPPING+

Leslie

The first one to try the food was ofcourse the only girl; Arwen Evenstar. She is the one that eats the most and a few days ago she weight more than the boys (1 830 g).....

Now the puppies are four weeks old, they play alot, develops fast in everything. They are also educated by mum.

Tina starts to eat a bone and ofcourse everyone wants it, so she growls and says no until they understand

Then if someone is begging enough she gives it to him or her

Thanks everyone for your nice words about the puppies:))

Yes Merry is a great looking Cardigan we both think (and other in the corgi club) that he might be the best one, sad that he got a short tail...... So he is going to a home close to us as a darling pet:))

We have not decided who to keep, now it stands between Bilbo and Sam, the two brindle boys. Pippin is going to a home not far away and they will take him to dog shows, he is also a very good dog in his temper and "construction" (I donīt know the english word).

The girl will go to the south part of Sweden to a home that has another Cardigan girl. They will take her to shows and start their breeding with her.

The one boy that we do not keep will go to a home that will take him to obidient training and compitions and some shows.

We are thinking alot about keeping Bilbo, but we are not sure..

Yesterday all the puppies went outside to play with our 5 adults:

Ahhhh, we will miss them all as you will!! As you said it must be mixed emotions in seeing them go, but that's great that you are so happy with their new families.

Will their ears start to go up in the next week or two? Both my Pems that I got at 9 weeks had their ears up at that time.

And our shorttailed Merry, the biggest in the litter (he was born the smallest and we almost lost him after a few days) will move to a young couple nearby us. They will go to obidience with him and "just love him":))

Yes their ears will start to go up soon, but Cardigan have bigger ears then Pembroke and some Cardigan have really big ears like our Sam and Bilbo, so that might take a while... Our Frodo got his ears up when he had turned 3 months old (without help from us).

So in a just hours from now Arwen and Pippin will move to their new homes, wonder what Tina will say. She is really counting her puppies after we have visitors..

Yesterday one of the boys from our litter came to visit; Fromax Peregrin Took (Wille). He has developed in to a very good looking 16 weeks old Cardiganboy:)) He is like his littermates á very happy and outgoing Cardigan.

He had alot of fun playing with his mum, dad and two brothers. The three other Cardigans had fun with him too.

Here are some pictures of Wille from yesterday:

He is so handsome!! I love his front feet!! They are huge - it's like having built-in snowshoes!!!

Thanks Petra for sharing your crew with us, it's so nice to see them grow and change.
