Been concerned about my two for a little bit lately...afraid to step on the scale..went to petsmart last night and Colby is up to 32.5lbs
Wondering if he's "getting fat"?? He is not as active as he "should" be I suppose....whereas Miz Cammie is ONLY 16.8lbs!!:NAH: I wonder if she is "too small"?? She never and I mean NEVER stops....she also didnt ever hit a growth spurt like colby did just before one years old..shes a peanut....they are both on the same amount of CA Naturals food and i know they both eat..but they are grazers so I am not sure how much or who eats whose bowls....any advice/suggestions etc??? +IDEA+

I worried....

I feel reasonably informed to answer as I have met them in person.

Rupert is 34 pounds and Jemma is 32. Both fit and just bigger than average.

Cammie is just 1. She's a baby. She won't fill out until she is past two years old. She's an energizer bunny and not only is her growing burning calories, but her natural energy is too.

Can you easily feel Colby's ribs?? I know with the fluff it would be hard to see them - but they should be easily felt below the skin.

In person and from photos I wouldn't think Colby heavy, nor Cammie skinny. I know that the fluffs sometimes look "chubby" - but it's the hair.

Aine was always a bit on the small side...I think she was 19 pounda at 1 year, but is now up to 24 pounds. We try to make sure they eat their own bowls as Maeve is 26 now and they are otherwise the same size, so she gets a little less. They too were grazers till we started adding the pumpkin/yoghurt to the food, now they chow down and finish the bowls.+EAT++EAT+

Janine is at 19.6 lbs, a bit thin but getting her Pred. potbelly now.

Jack when he isn't thin is over 30 lbs, and Merlin in his heyday was 33 or so. There is a lot of variation in size in pet corgis. The thing to do is watch for fat.. Feel along the backbone and see if the ribs are easily felt. (They may be hard to feel on the sides due to the dog's coat, but just at the backbone they should be evident.) For a 25 lb corgi to gain a pound is like a 125 pound woman to gain 5 lbs (and probably worse, since they have long backs and aren't likely to take it easy if something hurts.)

thanks deb...i hoped you would chime in...yes i can feel colbys ribs, under all the fluff...and cammie sure is just high energy...i havent noticed if adding pumpkin makes them eat any faster but i bet it would...we'll be doing that more often i suppose and maybe i will put a little less food in colbys bowl to begin with and see what happens...i just dont like to worry about my babies...and jamies the one who has been mentioning on more than one occasion that shes not gaining...

I can also talk to this issue...and my two are littermates!

At a year, Andy only weighed 17 pounds. She had a growth spurt between 18 and 24 months. She gained 10 pounds and got a little longer (and you've seen her, Julie - she's not very big).

Rhys was about 28-30 at a year. He hit a growth spurt the same time as Andy and put on length and weight - he's about 36 pounds now.

I think yours are in good shape. As long as you can feel Colby's ribs!

ETA: I weighed Andy a little while ago...and she only weighs 24 pounds now.

I agree the 'if you can feel their ribs' test is how our Vet sizes up our corgis too. Dylan is 31 lb, a pound or two heavier how that his is past 11 and isn't as fast as he used to be.

And Danny is almost 37 pounds, and I don't think that he should get any heavier. His ribs aren't that easily felt now, but at 16 months he's still filling out. And I did notice that he was a wee bit behind the young Sheba Inu in the race around the dog park today too so I'm watching him carefully.

They didn't seem too fat / too skinny when I met them eaither Julie. And that Cammie is a little dynamo! As all us girls know . . . the metabolism will slow eventually! *sigh*

I haven't met them so I'm going a lot on what Deb's saying because she has met them.

The "average" female is about 25 lbs. If Cammie is only about 16 lbs. now, even immature she is not going to fill out to become 25 lbs. unless she's fat. So IMO, Cammie is a petite girl. Bet she ends up at 18-20 lbs. My Solo was 18 lbs at maturity. Just small. (And cute as a bug!)

Well, I guess Andy is a weirdo...because she only weighed about 17 pounds at a year...and now, at 3, she weighs 24-5.

And quite a few people on this board have met her and they can vouch that she's not fat and, in fact, quite petite! :BIGGRIN"

Well, ya know...I don't know how she weighs that much...when I moved into my apartment, I told them she weighed 20 pounds. Nobody questioned.

I would not be surprised if Cammie stays little, though - especially since she's such a busy bee.

While at the dog show over the weekend I had occasion to help with 2 of the corgis that Dylan's father's breeder was showing. Her dogs were much smaller than my boys, they were girls, and still young, but they were very much smaller. But then, from what I have seen in this area, the show corgis are generally smaller.

I thought that too - at a show we just went to I thought "Jackie is a beast next to these corgis!" (not that she's not a beast anyway . . .)

Danny is noticeably bigger than Dylan, and comparing him to those wee girls, and him spinning at the end of the lead that Gary had him on, well, ya, beastie fits him too.:TWITCHY:

For Chester, when he got up to 45 pounds, he looked fine, but his energy was a bit lower - he didn't jump much. He was back to being a normal spring at 43 pounds. He sneaked down to 41 when I added a walk, and he has been suffering, HA! with the eat more diet.

I do need to weigh him, but I fear the scale after a week of pies.
