I was given the opportunity to buy these scent articles, sight unseen for $20.00 and I did. Thanks Jo & her son Dan. Danny & I are of course years way from needing them for trialing, but they'll be good for early practice. Start them young my training friend Mary says. I still need to get a leather glove though, and some new tongs.

Danny didn't know what these were, but he wasn't please that he couldn't play with them.

They are for obedience training Kassie.
This article will explain it.

I think Sadie might be good at scent discrimination. When we go for our walks, her nose is constantly on the ground...she sniffs every tree and bush, every sidewalk, and every blade of grass (well, maybe that's a wee bit of an exaggeration ). But she does sniff, and then mark, many sites along the way. She seems to think some are more important than others, and has some spots that she returns to each day - like old friends!

I wasn't sure of the original price, but I knew that it was more than what he was asking. They were never used, too small for his dogs, he now has Rotties.

Not really. My first Lab learned them automatically... she had picked up things I sent her for all her life, so when I tried Scent Articles she automatically went for the right one. We never trained for Utility, though, and I don't think she would have picked up metal without more training.

So is there ever a problem in training, when the dog picks it up and just wants to go trotting off with it?

My trainer friend in WA was the one that told me to give Danny the jar rings to get him used to the metal. We haven't done leather yet, but I'm sure that won't be a problem.

I'm sure there could be, although I've never seen it in the ring. A solid recall is needed first before the dog can be sent out.

Well, we quit Open (with my first Lab) when she went over the jump, picked up the dumbbell, and left the ring to go lie down under a tree.
Back then my 24 inch at the shoulder Lab was expected to jump 36 inches, and it was just too much for her.

And she obviously knew it!

So, Barbara, how do you teach them to pick up dropped items? That would be a good thing. Can you tell I've never trained a dog before for anything but walking on a leash? ( that was BC, before corgis!)

Well, how about starting out with fetch. And then teach the word 'get it'.:BIGGRIN"

I taught wicca first the "game" of fetch...(go get the thing and bring it back)
then seperate from the game taught the "hold" (hold the thing until I say)
and then paired them together.
She now knows that "fetch" means get out there and retrieve it and bring it back to front and hold.
She has always loved to fetch. I used to play on a scent hurdle team- which was LOTS of fun. Kind of like flyball in that the dog goes down a row of four jump but instead of a ball they have to scent out their own dumbbell and bring it back. Wicca LOVED it but now there aren't enough dogs to run a team in my area anymore :o(
I have been training Utility with Wicca for a while. We are working on our go outs now- Wicca is like me and can't walk/run a straight line :o)
First we have to get our CDX though...which means that her stays have to get a whole lot better....

Danny loves to play fetch too, but still tends to 'spit' the toys at me. I do separate the hold, but am having a very hard time getting him to do it. Maybe I should work with the clicker?
