Last night I noticed Link's right eye had some greenish goopy stuff. I still have the antibiotic drops from the cloudy eye incident so I started him on those (yes, this is the same eye). The white of the eye looked a little redder than the other one, no bulging or anything. Then later he had some kind of raspy cough sounding thing, and his nose was running and dripping a bit. I gave him another drop in the eye before bed, it looks much better this morning. Come to think of it, he had that weird cough thing the other day too, just once. He's acting pretty much normal, still plays and is always hungry. Today we have a snowstorm so there's no taking him to the vet. I'm thinking he has some kind of cold. He hasn't been anywhere since last Saturday's playgroup and last week's fight in the park, maybe he picked something up there?

Is his cough like a wierd barky noise??? Could be a strain of kennel cough - it's going around here. Even if he got his vaccine for it, it doesn't cover every strain.

No, it's more of a wheezy sound, really strange. The only thing I can compare it to is the sound Millie makes when she inhales her food sometimes. Neither of mine have the vaccine for kennel cough, I'm comfortable with making that choice as most dogs who I know who've caught it have also had the vaccine.

That sounds like kennel cough - call your vet - most vet's don't want them coming into the office because they are very contagious - Millie will most likely get it too and you may want to get her meds before she develops it over the holidays.

Our vet has a sign right on the door not to bring your dog into the office - they are checking them up in the parking lot!

I agree with Deb, I'd call your vet. Hope it clears up quickly for Link.

Yup...sounds like kennel cough to me, too.

Hope you can get rid of it quickly, before Millie gets it. Hugs to Linky. +WUBCLUB+

I found this link: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=600

The videos show the difference between a "cough" and "reverse sneezing" - a handy thing to know.

Hmmm, I replied to this earlier but must have hit preview instead of post.:ARG:

Anyway, thanks so much Tana for the lesson on coughs and sneezes. I thought reverse sneezing was something totally different. Link has definitely been reverse sneezing and not coughing. I gave a call to the vet, she said it could be a cold or allergies and if he's worse tomorrow (because he's much better now) to bring him in.

He's great - right now he's just dying for someone to go outside with him to play in the snow. He looks at me with that pitiful PLEEEEEASE look.:TWITCHY:

I haven't heard any sneezing and his eye is normal looking (but I'm continuing the drops as the vet advised).

Neither of mine have the vaccine for kennel cough, I'm comfortable with making that choice as most dogs who I know who've caught it have also had the vaccine. Your right, there are different rhino virus they can catch even with the vaccine. Last year, Pip caught a "cold" from one of his friends who had just came home from being boarded. They took one short walk together and within hours, he was sneezing constantly. Both had bordatella vaccines and it cleared up on it's own (vet recommended) in about 3 days.

About a year ago Lulu got a doggie cold virus. The vet said it was a cold virus, not kennel cough.

She had been fine the night before but when I got up in the morning and let her out of the crate her one eye was completely swollen shut with green goo and her other eye was open but gooey tracks down her face.

I raced her into the Vet (still the hysterical doggie mom) and she said it was a very contagious cold virus she had seen quite a bit of. Prescribed antibiotic, the antibiotic eye drops, sent home antibiotics for Tuck too and told me to keep them home and away from other dogs for 4-5 days. To this day I swear she picked it up at our agility holiday party. Tucker didn't go (stayed home with my brorther watching football... male bonding!)

The funny thing is that Lulu never coughed or sneezed but she had a raspy voice! She moo'd rather than barked. Pretty funny after I stopped panicking. She was so sad. My high energy little girl clearly didn't feel good for about 48 hours but had no clue how to shift into low gear and take it easy. She takes life at one speed. But the mooing just cracked me up.

Tucker did his antibiotics but fortunately never showed any symptoms.

I got in on this late, glad to hear that Link is feeling better!! It's always so hard when our fur babes don't feel good and can't tell us in our language...

Give him and Millie a hug from us in frigid Iowa!
