View Full Version : Questions from a newbie on potty training

We just got our first PWC about a week ago. He's now 11 weeks and partially potty trained. I've taken this week off to be home with him, but will be returning to full-time work next week.
My questions are these:
1) The first couple of days home, we led him to his potty area in our fenced yard and he didn't have any problem with accidents, assumably because we let him out constantly. Because he would wait by the door to be let out when needed, we thought that maybe it would be better to wait until he signals us to teach him to let us know. Which one should we be doing: letting him out constantly when we're at home or making him signal to us?
2) Also, at times, he will go outside and play, and then comes in and within 5-10 minutes poops/pees on the floor. Is this normal? Any recommendations?
3) Best recommendation to remove pet stains?
Thanks for any help you can provide!

The biggest thing we didn't do that I really wished we had done was to train him to go before he plays. That way you don't have the come in and potty problem. Take him out immediatly after sleeping, about 15 min after eating, and after particularly hard play. I know for the longest time it seemed it was we who were trained, not Aine.
Corgimum had some great stuff about it when Danny was a pup, a bit over r year ago that you could find in archives. Are you going to crate him while you're gone? Can anyone let him out at lunch time for a while? Good luck with your baby!

Thanks, Kassie. I plan to put him in a bathroom w/vinyl floor with the door babygated while I'm gone. We don't have anyone available to come let him out, so I *hope* we don't have too much of a problem with the transition from training pads to peeing outside.

I believe that the time between mandatory potty breaks depends upon the age in young pups. Since we got Trevor at five months of age he didn't need as much training and could hold it longer, so I will defer to someone who can recall exactly what the potty break schedule should be!
I think that it's helpful to use a verbal command like "go potty" when taking your pup out to his potty area. Then lots of praise after he's completed his business. :BIGGRIN" That way you can help insure that he goes before play time, so less chance of accidents afterwards.
As for the pet stains, I've found that regular carpet cleaner works for the stain itself, while the odors can be attacked using some of those enzymatic cleaners from the pet store.

Hi Christa,
I work fulltime and my dogs are at home alone all day.
If they are trained to only pee and poop when they tell you and you are not home - then you are in trouble.
I take mine out at regular times to pee and poop. They know to go then, and they know they will be going out again in a certain amount of time.
The hard thing with pups is their tiny bladders, so this isn't alway feasible. Both Corgis I raised from 9 weeks were trained to go in the apartment on paper when they couldn't make it between regular outings.
As they grew, they were able to go longer between outings and were then trained not to do their business inside. It isn't an easy method, but I didn't have any choice. In the morning when I'd get up I'd pick them up and get them out without letting their feet hit the ground.
It's a tricky time - good luck!

As for the stains, we used Nature's Miracle. We did the whole house before we brought the puppy home as well as for a christmas present for my boyfriends mom (she's had 2 dogs and white carpets). If its a stain, just pour some over it before you use anything to pull it up. Really saturate it. It even got out a red wine stain and ravioli sauce stain! If your carpets are light and are using a carpet cleaning machine you can use a capful of peroxide as well (thats from my dad who cleans his carpets once a week).
Welcome and good luck with the new baby! Pictures please!

The breeder named him Levi and I was going to re-name him Brady, but Levi just seemed to stick to him, so Levi it was.
