View Full Version : Eating too little?

So when it comes to food Starfox is definitely NOT a corgi. In the mornings he will eat about 1/2 a cup of food if that, and for dinner he eats maybe 1 cup. He almost NEVER fully finishes what I put in his bowl. He hardly ever begs for food  He almost always has food in his bowl that he just leaves alone and doesn't get finished until another dog comes over and eats his left overs. He would rather play fetch than eat meat most of the time . He is almost 15 months now and weighs about 30lbs. Is this okay??

His weight is fine. Is he boney? Can you just feel his ribs under his coat? Some foods have more calories in smaller servings, so as long has he is healthy - it shouldn't be an issue.

He may just be non-food motivated - which definitely is weird for a Corgi!

Mine only get a total of about 3/4 to 1 cup a day (1 cup for the larger dogs.) Maybe you are overfeeding. Food labels are rarely correct as to how much to feed.

He is bony, I can easily feel his ribs. But it is good to know that others eat as much as he does!

and he is definitely NOT food motivated at ALL!!!! It makes it hard to train him sometimes lol! I try to get him to do something, and he just looks at me like "do you really think I want that food that much? I could sit here and stare at you all day too!" :TWITCHY:

I'd try a higher calorie food. What are you feeding? There are foods for more active dogs or puppy foods that are more calorie-rich. It's wonderful that he isn't so food motivated as most of ours are. (Mine would all eat more if they could.)

You should be able to feel the ribs but he shouldn't be bony.

He may be growing and not have caught up in weight, but as you said he is not so interested in food, so feeding a higher calorie - but good quality food as Bobbie suggested is worth a try.

Gees, I wish I had this problem myself!

do you guys know any that is easy on the stomach as he has a very sensitive stomach. i just switched him onto nutram for sensitive stomachs and this has finally gotten his poo to a decently hard consistency...

Higher calorie density might be harder on the stomach, but that depends on why he is sensitive. Many dogs have a sensitivity to corn and get soft stools, if it is just that, any corn-free food might work. If it is really sensitive you might not be able to get away with a different food. But if you just switched, wait and see if he gains weight or eats more of this one.

i'm not too sure why he is so sensitive but all nutram brands are wheat and corn free and i was on other nutram brands before (chicken or lamb) which gave him better stool but still not solid..."NO:": i will ask the people at my pet store if they know of any that might suit his needs

If he is on their dry food, why not see if they have a comparable wet food and just add it to what he has now?

Good Luck trying to find a food that Starfox likes and is interested in too, sometimes it take a few samplings. In fact when you go to your pet food store you could ask them for sample pack sizes (free) to try out. Most companies supply the retailers with plenty of those.

Dylan was not interested in his food this morning, not usual for him, but I put a sardine on top of his kibble and it was like magic! He gobbled it all up.:ROLLEYES

It will entice him to gobble up the dry at the same time. I used to add a heaping tablespoon of canned food to my guys meals - but they have the opposite problem of Starfox. :CUTE:

This is the 'wet' food that I add to Dylan & Danny's meals a couple of times a week.

I buy it at Petcetera here. A small (sample size) roll for $3. lasts for quite a few meals. I slice it up and freeze portions of it for them.

I found this much easier to use than canned, especially when traveling in the RV, I can control the portions better and they love it!

Jax used to be a non-corgi when it came to food, but since I switched to different food this past fall and started adding water and wee bit of pumpkin, he dances for his food and eats like he is starved. Down side of that tho is that he has gained weight, so last week, after being "talked to" at the vet's office about weight issues, we've switched food again to one with a much lower fat content. He gets a 1/2 cup twice daily.

If he is on their dry food, why not see if they have a comparable wet food and just add it to what he has now?

Or add vanilla Ensure (or the generic equivelent) to his food. It's easy on the stomach and will add extra calories.

i couldn't find a wet food for sensitive stomachs so starfox now gets his dry food for breakfast with a little bit of peanut butter (some that i have been using from before the whole peanut butter problem) mixed in and he gobbles everything up!!! well...most of the time...sometimes if i wake him up too early he doesn't eat his food and does not eat anything until dinner  starfox says he is NOT a morning doggie!!! he doesn't even go do his business early in the morning, he goes outside and lays down and goes back to sleep...and this morning it was -20 with the wind chill here !!!

for dinner he gets his pellets and roasted chicken, he gobbles it all up too!!! i think he also likes the taste of this new food a lot more which is good! and his poop has also stayed good
