View Full Version : Had a scare with Jack..

Well, first I had a scare with Janine... I got home at 3 and checked her gums and they seemed too white.. We had a vet appointment for Thursday but I considered taking her in early. But I checked again and they seemed okay so I figured we could wait until her appointment.

At dinner time I finally noticed Jack wasn't himself. (So I'm not sure when it started.) He didn't jump up for his food and he seemed to be uncomfortable standing. No obvious signs of limping, and he had a great appetite. I was worried that it was his back but there were no signs of paralysis, just that it was uncomfortable for him to stand so he would rock back on his haunches and lie down.

I did call the vet's office, but the vet on call is someone I don't like, and so I didn't talk to him. I figured if Jack started to seem worse we could go to the Vet ER (three choices, although no one can do back surgery if he suddenly got worse) He didn't seem to be getting any worse, and I figured I would keep him quiet (which uncharacteristically was no problem) and then go in the morning. (A problem in itself as I would have had to drop him off and leave.) He wasn't in the kind of pain that looked like a disk rupture and his tummy wasn't tender or hard so I didn't think it was that.

Merlin woke me at 4 to let him in (he goes out the dog door) and Jack was still sleeping. But I couldn't go back to sleep, worrying about how I was going to get him to the vet (since I teach all day) and pick him up (I'd have to get out of orchestra early) and what to do if he needed surgery (my specialist of choice is in Santa Cruz, 3 hrs away) and how to afford it (since the roof is needing repair, too.) So I got up at 5:15 and lifted Jack off the bed as he was stirring, and he was okay.

Now he is up and moving normally, and acting himself. So I think he just tweaked something. He gets crated today and tomorrow and then will go to the vet with me on Thursday when I take Janine. I'd like to have them X-ray his back just to see if anything looks not so good. Merlin had a similar episode once, and my Lab Pippin several times (in her case she would crawl on all fours but not stand up.)

I should emphasize that if Jack HAD been in extreme pain (evidenced by crying or shaking) or had been dragging his legs or not had feeling in them, or in no pain but unable to get up) I'd have been at the ER vet in a minute (probably to get them to drug him up before we drove to Santa Cruz in the middle of the night.) If you ever suspect a back injury keep your dog quiet and get help as soon as possible.

Oh, scary! I hope Jack is ok today and the vet visit goes alright.

I always worry about Andy's back...I've been trying to keep her from jumping off the bed lately, but she never wants to wait for me! :SWOON: After seeing Annie's surgery just a couple of months ago, I have tried to be extra conscious of the Corgi back.

That was a scare for sure! Very good information and advice for everyone Bobbie, thanks.

Since Annie's situation and hearing of similar incidents on Corgi-L, I try to ensure that I am feeling both my dogs spines on a daily basis, so that if anything is ever starting, I can catch it early. I know that sometimes it just happens and there is no warning - that really scares me.

When it happened with Merlin, about a week after Wesley (my first cart dog) died, I panicked and did go in to the vet on Sunday. This looked similar enough that I was less worried but I still worried a lot! Had my own good vet (or any of the other three that I like) been on call I'd have taken him in last night but it would have been a waste with the guy who was on call and I didn't think it warranted the ER (quite.)

What a night for you!

So glad to hear that Jack is better this morning, fingers crossed for his x-rays on Thursday, and for a good checkup for Janine too.

And the reminder about instant attention to a corgi's back issues being paramount can never be said too often.

Hoping you see continued improvement when you get home.

Glad to hear that Jack is OK today, but, good that you are going to have a little look over on Thursday at the Vet!

It is such a scary thing to even start thinking about again...another one of our beloved corgis having a back issue."NO:": Steve and I are very cognizant now of everything Annie does...probably too much so, but, that surgery is WAY too fresh in our minds.

Please keep us posted Bobbie as to the check-up results.

You know what the first thing I noticed was? This is really weird. Jack's flop ear was standing up. All evening, when he was uncomfortable, it stood up- I'm guessing because he was tensed up. I'm definitely going to have him checked out- I wish we could get an MRI here and will go get one if anything seems iffy.

I guess the rest of you don't have Jack's early warning system!

Yes, and knew that I was taking a calculated risk by not going in last night- in part because I knew that even if it was a disk issue the ER here can't do surgery so the time factor wasn't going to make much of a difference.

Yes, I could see that was the case for you and Jack. Those dogs are so lucky to have you Bobbie.

And I can't imagine Jack's ear being up! What a surprise for you.

Glad to hear jack's better this morning. Backs are scary! Our former mixed breed had problems too and our vet spent 3 hours on the phone with us late one night seeing if we needed to rush her to purdue. Glad you can take him along with Janine! Not a good night for our kids!

Jack's ear goes up periodically, first thing in the morning when he isn't at all tired. So I've seen it lots of time, it was just odd in this situation when you'd think it would have been droopy.

Jack has such a long back that I worry a little, but its also (normally) very flexible. I will be happy if they come up with a genetic test for IVDD.. not only because it would be good to decrease the incidence in the breed, but because if we knew which dogs were suceptible we might be able to do more to prevent it.

Jack normally does not jump off the bed but he does jump up on things (like feet up on the counter) and he acts crazy. Saturday he raced back and forth in the dog park (along the fence racing the dogs on the big dog side) but he was fine Sunday and Monday, this didn't hit until yesterday.

Hope Jack is going to be okay - and after Sooty's back injury 4 weeks ago
I am wary about backs too now- luckily Sooty seems to have made a great recovery.

I just kept thinking... if it is his back, the surgery better work, because I don't think I can manage three in carts!

Wow, so scary; I'm glad that Jack is feeling better today!

Umm, so I'm showing my ignorance here, but I'm not sure how tummy density relates to back injuries and what I should be aware of?

Sending good vibes for you and Jack! Bella sort of did that once after an agility trial, she was actually dragging her back end part of the time. Of course I panicked and rushed her to the vet where after expensive tests they determined that it was probably just some soreness. Sure enough, anti-inflammatories did the trick.

Maybe Jack just needed a little extra attention since he has been the healthy one of the pack.
Bella sends kisses his way! +SMOOCH+

It doesn't. But a hunched up, painful appearance can also be a bad tummy ache or even bloat (uncommon but not impossible in corgis.) Or a kidney infection- basically it means pain in the lower back or abdomen.

He's still fairly sore today but not as bad. He's definitely going with me to the vet tomorrow.

Glad to hear that Jack isn't as sore today, and fingers crossed for both of them at the Vet's tomorrow.

Ah, gotcha. Just refering to general pain in the area. And thanks for mentioning bloat - I've often wondered how often/if it is an issue with corgis. One would think so, with the deep chests and all, but you never hear about it, so I'd wondered just how common it was.

We are sending positive vet vibes for Jack's visit today!! Hope a little rest and maybe some anti-inflammatory meds will take care of everything.
