Once again a product's packaging changed and that alerts me to check labels. Chester is on Missing Link. They took shark cartilage out. I emailed to ask why.

I didn't realize it was in there and glad I give Chester under the recommended dose (1tsp, he is 44lbs). Shark cartilage can prevent new blood vessels from being made. This is excellent for tumors - to starve them from getting new blood, or for some dogs it gets rid of fatty cysts. But this isn't recommended for growing pups. Now that Chester is two, I would be fine with the ingredient. Though, I use homeopathy for fatty cysts anyway.

I couldn't tell if the Omega 3 was reduced because they don't list the amount.

I'll update if I get a response to my email.

Let this be a reminder, if a package changes, it isn't for marketing, it is because the ingredients changed, and do compare old and new labels.

Thanks for the warning Merrie - I just bought a bag of the MissingLink Plus, and it was the same packaging. Do let us know what you find out.

Hello Merrie,

We removed the shark cartilage because it was not on the approved list of ingredients for pets and animals by the AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials). We pride ourselves in following all of the guidelines of this organization and the FDA and the USDA. We originally removed the bone meal and replaced it with the Shark from concerns about BSE (mad cow). In our haste we did not realize this was not an approved ingredient. We have substituted the shark with bone powder, guaranteed to be free of BSE. We have this ingredient to supply a natural source of calcium to the product.

Hopefully this answers your question and thank you for contacting Designing Health.

Sincerely,
