Hi everyone......

I've been having issues with Chloe & her barking. It's just gotten out of control!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:ARG: She of course barks when someone comes to the door or walks by the house...I can handle that just fine. The thing I can't handle is when we have company come to the house, she WILL NOT stop barking, growling (not a mean growl) & carrying on. :CHATTERBOX: It's getting really bad. She's especially bad when it's someone that she doesn't know very well. Also, when I'm outside talking to the neighbors, she will not stpo barking. It's like she's jealous that I'm paying attention to someone else!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I would suggest obedience classes so she can learn to listen to you when there are other people and dogs around.

And do not put up with this. If she cannot be quiet when she's with you, keep her on leash and give her something else to do. Tell her to lie down and stay (down is a submissive position too, so that reinforces you are the one in charge here.) If she barks, put your hand around her muzzle and tell her "be quiet!".

Be persistant and keep trying.

Hi Peggy....

Thanks for the response. I really think that I should take her to obedience soon. She won't even stay when I tell her to. She is really stubborn.........I've never had such a stong willed dog before. I think I'll look into some classes for us both.

Millie is extremely well behaved, except for her barking. It's just horrible and excessive. I've tried so many things. If I keep her leashed to me she rarely barks, so that works, but as soon as she's off she does it again as normal. I can't keep her leashed to me all day with the way I zip around everywhere. Sh'e 10 yrs old, so she's pretty used to doing it. I fear Link is going to pick up the habit.

My heart goes out to you. Tucker likes to bark but Lulu is just obnoxious.

When people pass the house, she has to bark at them. I think it is less territorial than it is "please come up the lawn and pet me". My spoiled little rats have most of the neighbors wrapped around their paws and walking up to pet them and gush all over them (I have a hidden/electric fence and neither dog will croos it).

That of course leads to my biggest probelm: the puppy scream! Lulu goes into this yelp, yelp, yelp thing and it is just piercing. Ughhh. A friend has a dog that did that and it used to kill me. And now Lulu.

I think I will try the "down" position and see if that works. I tell her to sit, look at me, keep her eyes on me, and she will stop. The a few seconds later when she sees someone else new or another dog she hasn't yet greeted, right back to it.

For instance..... last night at Obedience class, I get her out of the car, she immediately sees everyone she knows and goes into it. I sat her, made her look at me, told her how good she was being, then as we walked closer to class and the people and dogs, she starts in.

She walks up to the Newfie screaming, rolls over on her back so the Newfie can sniff her tummy, screaming all the time. Tail is going 90 mph, and she is wiggling (the hussy!).

I get her quieted down and the whole things starts again with our Pem pal Scooter and my best buddy Bliss the Berner. By this time the whole county knows she has arrived. Stealth is not in her vocabulary.

Once she settles in, she is fine. I keep thinking she will outgrow the puppy scream but she makes progress. She just seems so excited to see everyone she goes off. And it's not like she doesn't see people and dogs regularly.

I have not tried the squirt gun yet and have to admit I am contemplating it. But Lulu is much softer than Tucker and I'm not comfortable with it. I guess the idea is to have a squirt gun or spray bottle and give them a squirt of water. More to get their attention than as a punishment but I am afraid Lulu would see it as punishment.

Good luck and I too am looking forward to hearing other thoughts!

Thank you!! I thought I was having problems with Delilah....now I know better. WHEW! She can be obnoxious sometimes, but I have been able to get her to quiet down. I think Checkers helped establish that she is not an Alpha dog. I get her to sit (most of the time) when in a crowd of people, but she will wiggle the whole time and do a low whine until someone pets her. Then she is off! I get her to sit again and she will see someone who has not loved on her and she raises her snout in that persons direction and says "Wooo woooo wooo" until they give in an come love on her. Usually saying "Ahhhh, what a precious puppy". What's a person to do?!!! LOL:TONGUE:

Has anyone here had to resort to the citrus spraying collar? I don't know if I would have the nerve to try it, but I guess that I would if my dog was bad enough.

I second that!!

Peggy & others have given you some excellent ideas, I would just add that mine get a "Time Out". Excessive barking gets a trip into the laundry/corgi room to quiten down. They can lay in a kennel, on the floor, have some water, but NO attention for excessive barking.

When I know we are having company coming they automatically go in that room and I close the babygate. When we have settled, and they are quiet, they get to come out, one at a time to begin visiting.

The two things that I did not read about before betting my first corgi: the barking, and the shedding.

When you think about it, corgis were breed to herd cattle. Great big cattle. They pretty much only have their barking and quick movements to work with. Sometimes I really feel that I am working against what is very natural to them.:TWITCHY:

This female Corgi thing really is something to deal with.

Little Miss Lulu once again refused to get in the car this morning. I think we will have to go back to walking on a leash from the house all of 15 feet to the garage. I had to chase her around the yard for 10 minutes this morning.

Actually, I got her into the house. I put the baby gate up, got her water, turned on the tv, and was already to leave her home from day care all alone. Then I looked at that little face and just couldn't do it.

Well next time she WILL stay home alone!

What a little brat she can be. Tucker will ALWAYS comes around but Lulu is very strong willed!

I also employ the "time-out" method when Jackie is being obnoxious or out of control. I send her to the kitchen (or the bedroom of the hotel suite, in the case of our CT meet up a few months ago  ), and she is to stay there until she settles down and I tell her it's ok to come back out. It works pretty well for us. I have to keep an eye on her though, because she always tries to inch her way back out if I am not watching. She's a wonderfully intelligent, stubborn little beast. Such is the world of the female corgi. :CUTE:

I hope one of these methods will work for you . . . otherwise you will be spending a fortune on Advil for barking-induced headaches! Good luck! +WUBCLUB+

Wow a headstrong female corgi.

I have never yet in all these years let my dogs go from the house to the van without a leash on (ours is a much longer though walk, 25' ) We live on a street where there is always a chance of a vehicle zipping by.

I feel the same way. If you could see Cody with his soccer ball outside; pushing it around while biting and barking at it - seems so natural - he is just practicing his herding skills. Of course, I don't want him to do that to people also, but it is hard to squelch it at times.

That's what Chloe is saying when she barks at people. .... "hey...would you come over here, say hi to me and pet me please"? LOL:LAUGH: I've tried "time out" when she barks, but she just barks more. I think I need to have a crate in another room for such time outs.

Sadie is shy, and moves away from people that she doesn't know yet...but she's barking the entire time that she's also slinking away! I've never seen these two behaviors together before! :CUTE:

I've not worked on this too much yet since the puppies are in the house and I'm guessing that part of her "concern" is maternal instinct. But she did seem rather vocal with new people in the house before the pups were born too. Not a quality that I am particularly fond of.

But, she is so cute as she warms up to someone new. If I sit down with her, she will walk quietly up to me and peer at the offending stranger over my legs until she has the courage to offer her nose to the intruder for a little pat. +WUBCLUB+

I guess we'll work on the noise factor in earnest after the babies leave....

Regarding the squirt gun - I had to resort to using it for Riley when she was out playing in the park - she was out of control with iher barking. She was in spirit a gentle and sweet dog, but in her park she was the stubborn boss/queen! I started carrying it with me and only had to use it s few time as an attention getter - she got the message pretty fast. When we would be somewhere without the squirt gun, I just had to make a "finger" gun and the spray noise and she'd snap her attention to me and stop. I bet Lulu would get the message quick Susan.
