View Full Version : Help! Can this possibly be normal???

I brush Sadie every couple of days, and she always sheds a healthy amount when brushed. But tonight!!!!! I must have brushed out a pound of white corgi hair - no dark hair in the mix to speak of. This was truly copious amounts of hair...and kept coming as long as I kept brushing. I finally stopped out of self preservation - and because I was afraid I would discover that Sadie really only weighs 6 pounds!
Is this normal???? Does it have something to do with just having had puppies? Does someone make corgi wigs??? Because I think we may need one! :BIGGRIN"
(I'm joking, but I really am a bit worried - is this really normal or should I be concerned?)

Well, I know after I had my daughter, a LOT of my hair fell out. I was concerned enough to call my Dr. and she told me not to worry. That my hormones were slowly turning to normal instead of my super nice hair, thick gorgeous nails because I'm pregnant hormones. Bummer!!!
Not sure if it's the same for dogs, but I'm assuming it's probably similar?

Chloe shed horribly when after she had puppies....I thought that there was something wrong with her, but there wasn't. Do they have Sadie on extra calcium??

It sounds like all the downy undercoat that is coming out, which would sound like she is just blowing her coat getting ready for summer, but the fact that she just had puppies could also have something to do with it, i would think Peggy or Debbie could answer that one for us here... but the frist time Dillon blew his undercoat i freaked out too, i brushed and brushed and figured i would end up with a bald dog but nope... he was just getting ready for summer! So I dont think it is anything to worry about... just a corgi shedding...

Don't worry too much dearie.
Dex sheds all year round & he still look puffy - It is super hot here.
On very hot days, he will sprawl on the cool floor with his tongue hanging out
He will not move if the aircon is on.

I think "blowing her coat" is exactly what is happening. I've never had a dog with an undercoat before - quite an eye opener! All of the coat that has come out in huge tufts and piles in the past two days of brushing has been white - none of her sable outer coat has shed. Thank goodness! If it had, she really would be bald!
So...this happens every year??!? Just before the summer heat, or is there another time that this major molting occurs?

supposedly twice a year-but for mine i just comb them daily every day, and it makes it a little better.. when they are blowing coat, the amount of hair can be really shocking... but it is a small price to pay for such a wonderful breed... I just made sure to get myself a really good vacuume cleaner ...as i say, I have a good vacuume cleaner and i am NOT afriaid to use it

sounds like Emma when she blows her undercoat... and add hormone changes from just having puppies!

Is this normal????
Yes. :BIGGRIN"
Does it have something to do with just having had puppies?
Yes, again.
Twice a year corgis do blow out their undercoat and post whelping the volume is very intense. They will also shed out copious amounts of their guard hairs sometimes too, sometimes to the point of going almost down to their skin. She will blow this way prior to coming into her next season as well. Spayed females generally shed year round - more of a constant thing and one doesn't get the major blow outs that are associated with the hormonal changes.

OH...there won't be another "season"!! Sadie is headed to the vet in early July when her maternal days will come to an unceremonious end.

Yep, absolutely normal. My girls blew their coat so severely after puppies that you could see their skin. All that was left was guard hairs. No undercoat at all. Looked kind of like the top of my almost-50 husband's head! Don't tell him I said that.

Debbie!
That is very interesting that spayed females don't blow their coats 2 times a year but rather shed constantly. I had never read that and it sure does explain a lot!!!!!
Lulu is a constant shedder! Tucker comes and goes.....

After Cindy was spayed I thought I had her shedding under control with a monthly visit to the groomer but now she goes swimming every week I have stopped the groomer for a few weeks and boy has the shedding stepped up. I think the swimming has encouraged the shed too. Combed her again tonight and we could have made another corgi especially as Sooty is shedding too.
I think I shall restart the groomer next week
