View Full Version : Lulu's trip to the ER

Hi All:
Lulu had an accident this morning when her brother Tucker hit her hard chasing after the ball. He hit her directly on her hip so hard she went into the air. Watching it, it felt like slow motion.
She came down on her hip and yelped and couldn't put any weight on it. By the time I got to her she was up and starting to put weight on her hind leg. I tried to get her to walk it off and she was putting some weight on it but clearly was in pain.
So I debated with myself whether to take her to her regular Vet or just run her to the ER at Penn Vet. I decided to just take her to Penn.
When we got there I lifter her out of the car and there was blood on the seat. I had no idea she was bleeding.
The ER folks took her right in, we were the only ones there at the time. They think she is probably fine but they want to x ray her hip to be sure it isn't dislocated and they will need to anesthetize her to stitch up the wound.
It looks like Tucker had his big old mouth open and a tooth caught her and tore a very clean and straight wound. (So now I wonder if Tucker, after I yelled at him, has a hurt tooth???). They are fairly confident that she doesn't have any internal injuries but will check that further.
While we were there they had 2 emergencies come in (puppy attacked by pit bull, cat hit by car) so Lulu is waiting in a crate. I work next door and popped over around noon and she had been for X rays, the Vet was busy so I didn't get a chance to hear what they found.
They should get to her later this afternoon.
I'll post more when I hear back from the Vet.
Susan

+FUZZHUG+ Lulu!
We send healing and pawsitive vibes that her injuries are just minor and no further than already assessed and that poor Tucker's tooth is OK.
Our babes play so rough sometimes...Annie nearly had her retina detached from a hit from Rocky the corgi (a neighborhood friend) when they were both going after a soccerball. Scary stuff.

I poked my head in the ER and they are still crazy over there. Lulu is sitting quietly and watching the world go by. I asked if she was in any pain and they said she doesn't seem to be. I guess they are being cautios abut giving her anything prior to doing her minor surgery.
I'm getting very frustrated that it has been so long. Bleeding is under control.
The good news is the longer they go the less important it becomes that I fed her at 6:05 am.

Thanks everyone for your good wishes for Lulu. Lulu is still in the ER.
They did get her to X ray and her hip is fine, no dislocation, and there was no damage to her internal organs. They are still backed up and it may be another hour before they anesthetize her to clean and close the wound.
I went over and sat with her for about 1/2 hour and they have been giving her pain meds. She seemed a bit subdued but very interested in what was going on around her. She didn't seemed scared or startled, just watching it all.
Sure hope the meds keep her quiet tonight! Normal Lulu after a full day in a crate.... She'd be bouncing off the walls.
In all of this I called a friend to go feed Tucker. She is going to take him home with her for the night. She checked his teeth and they are all there!

I'm sure Lulu is sitting trying to figure everything out. She's always got something going on in that little head of hers. At least she doesn't get bored - goodness help them all if she starts barking! Or maybe she should start - they may speed up her care and release!
Hang in there - hopefully you can get out soon!

Lulu had her minor surgery and she is now sleeping it off.
With any luck we will be on our way home by 11! What a day.
Looking forward to hearing what her instructions are for after she leaves the hospital. No swimming for her! I may end up bringing her to work with me tomorrow just to be sure she stays quiet.

Well, I'll be waiting to hear what they have her do. I wish I could take Gizmo to my work. They've let me twice, once after his dermoid surgery, and once when they cut my electric off and poor guy had no A/C or fan to keep him cool.

Hi everyone!
Lulu is home and is doing very well. When all was said and done, she has a 3-4 inch gash (7 cm according to her discharge) from the top of her hip down to her tummy. Of course they shaved her, stitched of 3 layers of tissue. I had absolutely no idea it was that long.
The incision looks really good so far. They did surgery around 7:30 that evening so around 9:30 the let me take her home. I had to stay up until midnight to give her pain meds so I set up the x pen and I sat in it with her on the floor. She kept getting up and looking at me like she wanted something.
I asked her if she had to go potty and she walked towards me. SO I took her out and around 11:30 she poo'd. I assumed that was a good sign. Just after midnight after she got her pain meds I took her out once more and she pee'd.
She slept well thru the night, better than I did and Tuesday morning she was ready to take on the world. I put a leash and collar on her and she pulled me right to the area where she goes to chase bunnies first thing every morning.
She ate her breakfast and went potty. Tucker had stayed overnight at a friend's and when he got home she wanted to play with him. She found the ball she dropped when she had her accident and wanted to play ball.
I think the thing that traumatized her most was putting on the hard white E collar they sent her home with. Tuck had the clear plastic, she couldn't even see thru this one so I thinkl it was the most scared I saw her.
So I went to Petco and bought the blow-up E collar that looks like a donut "thingy" that people with hemorhoids sit on! She seemt to have no problem with the donut!
I tell her she looks like the bride of Frankenstein doing a "man overboard" drill!
I was so exhausted Tuesday I stayed home with her. She went for several short walks, we napped, she hung out in the x pen (not happy...).
Tucker was not himself yesterday. I tried to give him some special attention. He and I went in the car to the store and then last night I let him sleep on the bed with me.
So Lulu has about 1/2 of the living room x penned off with water and some toys. Tucker is on the outside with the furniture and his toys. m Tomorrow I will bring them both to work for the day to break up the boredom.
Lulu has to remain quiet for 14 days until her sutures get removed. She really doesn't seem to be in pain, just miserable that she can't play.

Oh, my goodness, Susan, just read about Lulu's accident. Sounds like she's taking it in stride, but I bet by the weekend, you're gonna have to start thinking of safe activities for her to keep her busy. And poor Tucker probably feels guilty and sorry for himself all at the same time.
Now I think it might be a good time to take care of yourself with those lemons and margaritas you mention in your signoffs!
Take care,

Just thought I'd post an update.
Can someone just put me in an x pen and leave me? COuld I just do nothing and rest/sleep for 14 days? OK, enough whining.....
********
Lulu is doing really well. Her sutures look great. I drop her meds in her kibble and she gobbles them right up. She is eating and pooing so all is good. She's doing great with the donut (e collar) around her neck.
They say watch her for lethargy and depression. Well, when she's in the xpen she looks awful. The second she gets out... God help us all!
She goes right to Tucker to wrestle. I am trying to keep my voice calm when I say "easy", "gentle". I realized it is hopeless to try to keep her absolutely quiet and I'm not sure it is 100% good for her. So since she is doing so well I let her play a little. At first I found I was stopping them with a voice that was full of anxiety.
So... calm....gentle... "eeeeeeasy".... gennnnntle"..... I think I was scaring them trying to break up their play. I don't want them to think it is bad for them to play together.
Last night when I got home from work I took them out for a little walk. We were on the front lawn in the grass so I let her off leash. The very second that leash unsnapped she bolted right into "crazy dog run" - where she zigs and zags and tears around the yard in circles. All the time she had that huge grin on her face. It was the happiest and most peaceful I've seen her look.
After dinner it was raining so we practiced obedience drills and marched around the house.
In the morning I put her on a leash and out the door we go. Tucker runs after the bunnies and she turns around and screams at me!!!! It's not a bark... it's more of a scream, she is really mad. She doesn't understand it is for her own good and it just breaks my heart.
12 hours post surgery she was herself. 24 hours post surgery she was herself. I keep thinking she is going to act tired, give some kind of sign that she had minor surgery. But nothing.
So I am searching for the right balance for her. Again, I am not sure keeping her absolutely still is good for her.
So she continues to do well. I called to make the appointment to have her stitches taken out. The discharge instructions said 14 days and the hospital said anytime after 10 days. So as for my schedule, 10 days fits best and if it is possible to take them out sooner..... I'm looking for a down side????
Of course, if the cut or suture show signs of infection or not healing, I would reschedule.
So thanks for all the well wishes for my little girl!
This has been a bad week for our Corgis. Sadie's under the weather, Dyl Bob's (wow, was he ever lucky!) got his eye boo-boo.

Poor Lulu doesn't understand why she can't chase the bunnies too! It's a hard line I know. I'm sure you'll do just fine... and as long as her scar is healing up and not infected I would probably let her play a little bit too.
Jespah
06-18-2009, 12:05 PM
You'd have more luck keeping the Tazmanian Devil quiet for 10 days! :TWITCHY:
I'd say the only issue with taking her stitches out at 10 days is if she will be in water she will still run the risk of infection. When Riley had her surgery that discovered her cancer, I had the stitches out on the earlier date. We were going up to the cottage and I knew she had to go in the lake - it was her "thing". The Dr. said that as she was a cancer patient - let her enjoy whatever life she would have left. So, she swam daily until she was exhausted. She didn't get infected. She died less than two weeks later - but she had 4 glorious days at the cottage.
Sometimes their souls need to be attended to as much or more than their physical needs. I'm sure she'll be fine at 10 days.
Don't worry Lu - the bunnies will be waiting for you!! :BIGGRIN"

Maybe, the bunnies will think Lulu is gone and then they'll pop out more, and so after 2 weeks, they'll come out and she'll have more to chase
Probably not, but a funny little thought.

Tucker just doesn't cut it when it comes to bunnies. He only goes as far as the brush. Lulu runs right into the brush after them.
I know if she gets away from me right into the woods she'll go and out will pop those stitches.
Another rainy night so I won't be able to get them outside. Yikes!
Hey... if I could put my inside weave poles together this might be a good time to teach her weave poles.......

I thought I'd post an update on Lulu's booboo!
She seems to be healing well. I think both she and Tuck were feeling a bit tired of their limited activity so I took them out to a nature preserve for a short walk this morning. The change of scenery was good for all of us.
Today it actually didn't rain so we were outside in the yard quite a bit. When the bugs started bothering her we went in tonight.
My dog walker is on vacation this week so she and Tuck will go to work with me 3 days. Friday she actually gets her stitches out.
Lulu continues to act as if nothing ever happened. She loves to roll on her back and although she doesn't seem too interested in licking her stitches, I worry about little thins like rolling on the carpet and in the grass.
She lets me dab a little piroxide on her wound each night and she takes her antibiotics w/o any trouble.

I am hoping she can get back to normal activity. I think I will still keep her out of the dog park at least until her fur grows back.
The dog walker takes her mid afternoon week days when the park is nearly empty but I don't want to take the chance that any dogs might look at her as weak and hurt her.
She loves the park but we will have to find another place to swim on weekends. That's if she can swim!
