What kind of baby gates would you all recommend for us to use. I really only need it for a month, as I'm moving to a flat.

Currently I'm using overstuffed pillows. Which have worked, but the boyfriend has gotten crazy, and keeps putting them back on the couch. And Gizmo went upstairs and tore up a ring box, no idea how it got on the floor. Left the ring alone!

I was looking at those. So I can use it upstairs and downstairs. I'm just wondering if I'm going to kill myself. I tend to fall up and down stairs... a lot.

Maybe if you know a cheap place to get walk thru gates? I was thinking, the play yard, and then just breaking it up.

Good gates if your dog doesn't jump them like Checkers used to do or chew up the plastic or wood like Delilah did! Cheryl has a great babygate (walk-through type) that she uses to keep the kids out of the stairs on the downstairs side, but she uses that one at the top of the stairs. They are never up there without her.

See if Cheryl will post her pictures showing the agility of Checkers jumping the babygate when Delilah was a puppy.

Gizmo isn't a jumper, though is a chewer, I don't think he would chew through that. But, he NEVER chewed, and he just started, flip flops, ring box, body spray bottle, q-tips. I really have no idea how he gets into this stuff!

We have this walk through wooden gate (Walmart) and like it.

And also have 2 of these from PetSmart.

One we have been using for almost 14 years, so we have gotten our monies worth from it.

I would not personally use a mesh gate, a paw could get caught in it, or a dog could even climb it. So for security, I use the thick tall vinyl gate.

Dogs chew sticks, sticks are wood, babygates are made of wood - or yup - sticks!

If he is chewing you may be introuble like I was. Rupert isn't a chewer, but he chewed through the wooden brace holding our old gate together and got out of "jail".

I recommend the full plastic ones. By a decent one, you will be surprised how handy it will come in over the years - it's a good investment for sure. If Gizmo got sick and you wanted to keep in the bathroom, but not have him closed in - babygate!

I agree with Deb...dogs love wood and most baby gates have some wood on them. When Annie was little (we had this grand idea that she could be left out by herself for an hour) she did work that a BEAVER would be jealous/proud of!!!

Foster and Smith (no affiliation) have some pretty sturdy looking gate type items.

Hope this helps some!

After extensive baby gate use for both kids and dogs I would recommend the type I had in Utah the most. It's a little expensive, but relatively easy to move when needed, and VERY easy to just open and walk through, in the end it is worth the cost. This is the link to the one I had... it is pressure mounted too so you don't have to spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to put it up. Metal gate so chewing isn't a problem, tall so jumping is out of the league (even for my guy who will attempt to jump anything), and with the vertical bars there's no chance of climbing either. So, this is my pick: Baby Gate (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2265806)

What a perfect thread! I was just pondering the exact same question. Thank you for all the thoughtful advice.

The gate I have is just like the one in the link but I got it for $12 at Feeder Supply. It only lasted for about 4 months though. :ER: Rocky chewed the little rubber stoppers off that hold it in place. But now if I just rest it against the doorway he will not touch it. I think because it makes a loud noise when it gets knocked down and he's scared of it. But yea, if pillows are enough to hold him back and you only need a gate for a month, that gate will be probably be fine...but spending a little more on a more durable gate would probably be a good idea for the future.

Well, he did okay today.
We put 2 of our oversized pillows on the stairs, the box his crate came in, and the vacuum. He won't go near that.

I went to a second hand baby store and got an all plastic baby gate... cheap.

Yard sales at this time of year are also a good place to look. I also got an inexpensive fireplace metal screen that works well. It is a tri fold kind with arched tops.

Cooper is afraid of things taller than himself falling on him so he hasn't ever tried to scale or jump over. Maybe letting them crash to the floor a few times in his presence helped to reinforce his initial wariness... just a thought

Good Will stores sometimes have them.... timing is everything with those stores.

I have always used the wooden baby gates they sell at Wal-Mart (I think they're made by Evenflow). I always make sure I get the taller one...32 inches, I believe, instead of 24.

Neither Rhys nor Andy have ever chewed on them...Rhys probably just never thought about it!

That's what I use and they work ok. Puppies could chew through them if left to their own devices though. I tried the walk through ones and they didn't work like they said they did. Cumbersome I thought. I like these better and can step over them. (Surely stepping over baby gates is a good form of exercise isn't it?)

Good points. I like the shorter ones as I can step over them. But yes, some dogs will jump them. I only use mine when I'm home, dogs are crated when I'm gone so right now that's not a problem for me.
