Tonight we start our first of five classes in novice Ob. Wish us luck please!

Hope that my guy pays attention too me, as you know, his biggest distraction in life is the chance to play with pals, new or already acquainted.

Class is at 6.30, the instructor has asked that he not have his dinner until he gets home. that will be close to nine after the long drive back.

And for this evenings treats we have.... a string cheese stick, Party Mix by Friskies, a stick sliced chub of Natural Balance Beef, Dried Herring strips, and some dried banana slices.

Surely I can get his attention with that selection!+ANGPRAY+

Mmmmmm Friskies Party Mix!!!!

Good luck, I'm sure he will be fine - he'll have his ups and downs and then learn it all in the end. Just have fun!!

Mmmmmm Friskies Party Mix!!!! Deb

Yep, tasty, small, & clean in my pocket. And I'm not tempted to eat them as I am with hot dog slices.:TWITCHY:

Thanks for the support everyone! Our trainer for this class is also one of the TNT Kennel staff, so she already knows Danny Boy.

Green Beans are another. We did it for heeling, and I ate all of them  Same with the hotdog. But yes, Frisky's is a hit here too. We're gonna start doing squeeze cheese.

Danny did wonderfully last night!!! I was so proud of him!!

He did not try to jump on Judith our instructor.

He did not try to go after the bigger dog that got into his face the minute he came in.

He did however succome to the come-hither looks of the beautiful 6 mo old Golden Girl as she wagged her tail at him, he ran over to her, but came back with me when I told him to.

His heeling was good! His recalls were wonderful! Even when I tossed a piece of cheese in his path! He made some pretty big arches so that the cheese wouldn't accidentally stick to his foot & he'd have to eat it.

We practiced fronts, he kept getting into the 'box', because 'box' means treats. I swear that he sits crocked after a couple of times to be double rewarded for fixing.

He was the demo dog amongst the four students, the instructor commented on how much more advanced he is than the other dogs, & complimented me on my footwork. And she asked the students several times to notice how Danny gave me such great attention, and that they should be practicing that at home.

By the end of the 1 hr class, which stretched out to 90 minutes, I wanted to get down on the floor with Danny Boy, scoop him up & hug and kiss him.+WUBCLUB+

Barb, what do you use Box for? Is that like for "Front finish left" or something else. I need another word that means "You're going to get a treat soon, so come be next to me". One of the dogs in our class, he uses little bit.

Barbara, That is awesome - Congratulations.

I think you should get down on the floor to scoop Danny up and kiss him! You have both worked very hard for this.

We use the Box to encourage Straight Fronts.

For the Left Finish, I say Finish and swing my arm. For the Right Finish, I say Circle. Most people say Around, but I started Danny off as a pup doing some Freestyle with Dyl and I in the kitchen, and we were already saying Circle.

Having said that, I rarely do any Finishes, as the dog can begin to anticipate and is not to move from Front until the Judge give the command. And I have to brag, Danny Boy has a fantastic Left Finish! I don't really like the Right, it's too easy to loose a green dog when they get the view behind you.

Note the happy look of a reward anticipation for his Box work on his furry little face.

Teaching square 1/4 turns.

Another tool that was used during this weeks lesson was a wooden platform. Home made from bits of 2x4 & plywood. Cut to the size that the dog needs to just have enough room to sit on. With the platform in front of us, the dog is called, and learns (muscle memory) to sit squarely in front in a recall. Then the handler moves to another side of it teaching the dog 1/4 turns, always staying in a straight sit and around the four sides. Gary is going to make Danny's this weekend and I'll post a picture of him on it.

Danny is game for anything that that involves teats!:BIGGRIN"

Interesting idea! Too bad it won't work for Candy... we need to work on his finish lefts before his rally trial in two weeks. (It's just level 1 again as they weren't offering anything else, but I wanted to let him do it since our options are so few.) It's inside so should be easy for him to do (grass makes it harder to turn in the cart.)

That's got to be hard with the cart. After he comes to Front, does he back up to swing left, arch out, turn past the back of you and then forward to come to Heel?

Not an easy maneuver for Candy by a long shot.:ER:

Inch & a quarter PVC. You can use lighter if you want, but Danny needed the bigger size as he was sitting on the first one we made.:ROLLEYES

Bobbie, here are pics of the platform that Gary make for Danny. It's 21 x 21 and looks a bit big for him from the front, but his wide fuzzy but was hanging over in the shot.:ROLLEYES

Some of the heavier dogs had a brace in the center, but his one seems to be fine for him.

Dylan of course had to have a turn, treats were involved you know.

Last night was our last class of the series, and we have both really enjoyed learning from this instructor. Even though it was at a level that Danny & I have worked at before, we learned a lot. Last night I would say that Dan has perfected the wooden platform. I was walking around it and he came to heel very smartly at each turn. And both of going backwards around it, he did very well too.

Muscle Memory.:BIGGRIN"

A wee break, and Sun Oct 25th (the day we get back from our cruise) we start a novice class working towards his CD, in the spring I hope.
