Hey, everyone! We haven't been particularly active here lately, as we've been busy.
I just wanted to tell everyone that Andy, who turns 4 on Tuesday, is finally old enough to participate in the UPenn Vet School Corgi hip study. So we are leaving tomorrow afternoon to go visit Auntie Susan, Tucker, and Lulu! Then on Saturday, Andy will be going in to the vet school at 9 a.m. to get her PennHIP test done. It shouldn't take long, but I will still worry because my baby has to be under anesthesia! +DULL+ So, if you can keep her in your thoughts that morning, I'd appreciate it!
After that, we will probably have a bit of an early birthday celebration with Susan, Tuck, and Lu - trying to find a good birthday "food" to share!
And I will report back when I find out the results of Andy's hip test.

Tana, we will keep the Diva Apprentice in our thoughts and prayers as she undergoes the anesthesia.
Glad that she is able to participate in the study and that she will also be having fun afterwards!
Safe travels! Annie, HRH the Diva sends Andy pawsitive vibes and sassitude!

Poor Andy- she thinks she is coming over to visit Sooty on a big boat- maybe she will have a nice dream about him while she is under- all the best Andy.

Good luck to Andy! I'm sure she will be fine - good for you for participating in the test.
Maybe next year after Jem is 4, I'll put my 2 demons in it.
Good vibes for Andy! +WUBCLUB+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+WUBCLUB+

Adding our pawsitive vibes for safe travels and a quick wake for Andy. Glad you are participating in the study.
Cooper is in the study also. While all dogs react differently, Cooper was his normal "rammy" self post anesthesia. Vet said the dogs might want to nap.. not Cooper!
We will send some extra vibes to both of you on Saturday morning!

For what it's worth, the anesthesia is basically a sedative injection to put them asleep. It's not the anesthesia they would use for surgery....
They do put an oxygen cone on them and as soon as they are done with the x rays, they give them a 2nd shot to wake them up. I snuck back and watched them finish up on Tucker.

Well, Susan and I took Miss Andy (and Tucker and Lulu, who had to wait in the car) to her appointment at the vet school on Saturday morning. While Andy was back getting examined, etc., Susan gave me a tour of the vet school, which was very interesting.
After 20 or 30 minutes, the tech brought Miss Andy trotting into the lobby. She came up to her Mommy, but she had the "glassy eyes." Everything went well, but you could tell she was tired. When we went back to look at the X-rays, Andy was kind of dazed so I put her up in my lap where she dozed off and on.
Now the big news: Andy's hips are fantastic! Very tight, with only a tiny bit of give in the left hip. The vet, Dr. Karbe, said that out of 24 Corgis so far in the study, Andy would probably be only the second one to have hips better than a .3 (.5-.6 is breed average). We got to look at her X-rays and they were great. So Miss Andy should not ever have arthritis (in her hips, anyway) and there was no sign of displaysia.
We went back to Susan's and had a good nap (everybody!) and Andy was pretty much back to normal by Saturday evening. She obviously felt great the next morning because she chased Tucker and Lulu, ran around Susan' yard like a crazy dog, and rolled in every stinky thing she could find! She got a bath last night.
Anyway, great news!!

That is great news!! Congrats to little Miss tight hips! +TUP+
Seriously, what a great resource to be able to take advantage of so that you have an idea of how your Corgi measures up - for good or for bad. Certainly, if you found out they could have issues, it would allow you to make decisions regarding certain sports or activities with them.

What great news. So we know that both Corgi's with .3 or better hips are right here. Maybe this forum is good luck?

Hahahaha "tight hips" good one!
I wish they were taking younger dogs, but I see why, as they haven't settled in yet. And I'm sure they'll be done with it by the time Gizmo is 4.
Can't I fib? I want to know about Gizmo's hips!
PS- You didn't stay for the woofstock festival, Tana? Gizmo and I were there. It was in Harrisburg PA.

Is Connor the other one?
Elizabeth - we were pretty busy. I left PA at noon yesterday. But it sounds like it was fun! As far as Gizmo, testing this early would not do you any good. Any sign of displaysia would probably not exist and he won't be done growing for another year or so.

Well, we were there at noon.
And I met Victoria Stilwell. So boo on you. And there was a little girl petite like Miss. Tight Hips Diva-Apprentice. She's getting quite a name now. But this little girl wasn't even a year old. And we met a big boy (38lbs. but looked good!) And 2 cardi's. Not sure if she's on this forum. But her 2 are named Blizzard (blue mer.) and Sooner (brown brindle). And now I want one more than ever!

Yes Connor is the other one. I was pretty impressed considering that we bought him from a pet store.

Any last minute 4 year old pems you can point to the Penn Hip Study would be greatly appreciated.
Dr. Karbe is trying very hard to finish up by the end of the month. I will be very interested to see the data analysis. What I am really interested in learning is when compared to the data Dr. Smith collected years ago, have we made progress - are Pems hips tighter on average or are we going the other way.
Again, I am still disappointed that more breeders and their breeding dogs haven't participated. I am worried what this will say about the sample.
BTW... as we were leaving there were 2 corgis going in for their evaluation. A red and white and a beautiful sable.

Dang, I would really have liked to have gotten Rupert done - Jemma is too young, but Rupe has a sort of swagger and I'd like to have seen him X-rayed.
Can you pick him up at the bus station if I ship him out??? :BIGGRIN"

Would Rupe get off and go get himself another pink pig somewhere along the way though? :BIGLAUGH:

Again, I am still disappointed that more breeders and their breeding dogs haven't participated. I am worried what this will say about the sample.
I still think it has to do with there not being as many reputable breeders in the area to participate. And on top of that the dogs must be 4 years old. I don't even have a 4 year old corgi at the present time. (Not to mention not being close enough to participate anyway.)
I agree, it might not be a very accurate report since many of the dogs are not from hobby breeders. But when you do something like this you have to consider the area. I don't think they were thinking hobby breeders when they started the study, just available Pembrokes. There are plenty of commercial breeders in the area, but since they don't test to begin with (as a rule) it's doubtful they'd take part in any study.
You have to remember the area, people have to be able to get their 4 year old pems to Penn to begin with.
It's much easier to participate in DNA studies where you can just send in cheek swabs, than when you have to physically bring in the dog.
JMO.
