View Full Version : And Jemma Limping, Makes 3 Girls!

Well, now Jemma makes it three girls limping.

She seemed fine when we got back from the lake. She was out cold on the loveseat for a while. Then a half an hour ago she was on the floor and I noticed she moved funny. I called her and her front left paw or leg is very sore.

Down went a low-dose aspirin with some cheese and she's napping now. I gently went over her from shoulder to toenail and couldn't find anything specific.

Any injured dog is my worst nightmare. I can't bend over never mind carry anything over 5 pounds and my friends moved yesterday - so I need some vibes that it's just her having over played this morning.

Oh no! Vibes for Jemma and for you too, that this is just a sore muscle from overdoing a little.

The paw soak in epsom salts seemed to help Bella a little bit. She actually sort of enjoyed it I think. Of course the constant flow of the Charlie Bears probably contributed to that.

How do you soak her paw Laurie??

Thank you all.

How do you soak her paw Laurie??

Just mix 3/4 c epsom salt with a qt of warm water and soak it in a bowl for as long as they will allow it (10-15 min). Of course that's assuming it's a paw and not a shoulder or something else.

Jespah
01-01-2010, 01:42 PM
Thanks Laurie - still not sure what the issue is, she's just laying here and I don't want to disturb her.

She's being watched over by big brother. Pardon the pine needles, I just took out the tree and can't vacuum with her there.

Oh Jemma, surely you've just adopted Sadie's intermittent limping trick! That one's always better the next morning after lots of sympathy and treats, a good night's sleep, and a baby aspirin.

Here's hoping that works for Jemma as well! +ANGPRAY+

Our biggest problem is that even with rest, she has to go up and down 3 flights of stairs just to do her business.

She has a bladder of steel, so I'm going to skip her tinkle trip outside now - she pooped and peed like a maniac at the lake, and take her out a little earlier than usual before her bedtime.

Wish my carpet luck!

Deb, if she keeps limping, go get a potty patch! www.pottypatch.com or better yet, the patio potty! http://www.patiopark.com/

01-01-2010, 05:27 PM
Wow, the last thing you need is another dog to carry up and down those stairs! I do hope this is just a temporary soreness. I'm with Kassie, you need an alternate potty plan if it's a long term injury.

And I must say, when Link was supposed to soak his toenail every night I nearly went crazy trying to get him to cooperate. It never happened, and for my personal sanity I just gave up. And he was fine for it anyway.

Aww poor Jemma... and poor you! I bet she just over did it playing. You know , this what happens to Gus (who is also limping a bit today...what is going on with all thiese limping corgis, i don't know) but with a good quiet night sleep on a soft mattress ( just not on a hard floor) he is just fine the next morning.

I will be sending out healing vibes that Jemma will be fine in the morning. For her evening potty break , unelss she is complaining or showing real pain, i would have her go (slowly) up and down the stairs herself , you just cannot be lifting another corgi up and down stairs... "NO:":

She looks pretty comfy in the photo with Guardian Rupe watching over her!

Vibes for Jemma! Zia knows all too well how she's feeling! Zia quit limping after her first dose of 2 aspirin. Hope the aspirin helps Jemma, too.

Thanks all - still limping, but am hoping by the AM she'll feel better. Lori reminded me she's done this a couple of times before this year.

Interesting idea for the pottygrass stuff Kassie - good to know about just in case.

Emilie, I'm hoping that yes, it's just an overdoing kind of thing. They were maniacs at the lake this AM. She especially goes full tilt after every ball thrown. Kind of funny as it took forever to teach her to play in the first place.

Thanks for the vibes - keep 'em coming.

Fingers and paws crossed here that she just over did it at the lake. You CANNOT be lifting her up and down those stairs!

Laurie, glad to hear that Bella is better. Danny's paw seems to be A ok again thank goodness.

And Vibes for ALL C2bC corgi legs.

Deb,
you know, that is kind of how Gus is. He runs flat out every time ... he pushes himself. I have found that with him, i have to be very careful to watch him and stop the game when he starts showing signs of fatigue. a little over a year ago i discovered this. We were playing ball in the backyard and after a while of playing, Dillon went for the ball and Gus couldn't get out of the way fast enough and Dillon basically ran him over... an Gus did not get up... he literally lay there whining. I nearly had a heart attack thinking that he was injured ... and i realized he was winded and exhausted and was unable to get up..he was not hurt at all ( well, maybe his pride that he got run over by Dillon ) but he was not going to stop playing just becuase he was tired or couldn't breath. Gus is now my gauge as to how long we play. Dillon will stop before he is too exhausted .. but Gus has such heart , he just wont stop himself and plays until he falls over unable to get up...

I really hope that Jemma is not limping come morning !

Jespah

Well, she barely made it out the door, down the stairs and out to tinkle. I had to use Charlie Bears to keep her going.

Strangely coming back up she barely limped. I cannot figure her out. "NO:":

I'm going to soak her paw, then rub some cream on it and then put her to bed with an aspirin.

I know what you mean about Gus going flat out Emilie - I do stop the game when I think they've had enough - even if they are saying otherwise.

It's tough sometimes knowing when to draw the line.

Deb, I know you worry about her going down the stairs, but I think if you take her down slowly she will be fine. You have to take care of your back. Jemma could probably use a pee pad if she had to. I'm sure that won't be necessary though, it will probably be better by tomorrow.

Good point Laurie, I think I will add pee pads to pedialyte to our "dog medicine chest". If I lived upstairs I would stock up.

Leslie,
Charlee Bears are a liver flavored training treat. They are inexpensive and low calorie so I use them a lot. They also come in egg and cheese flavor now and around the holidays they have turkey and cranberry flavor.

Deb, and Jemma,

Oh dear oh dear! Just read this. Vibes for Jemma {{{{{{{{{{{{Jem}}}}}}}}}}}}.

Sounds like there is some improvement in Jemma's leg/paw. Thank goodness for the anti inflammatory properties of asprin! I hope asprin and rest do the trick.

Deb you have to protect your back! I agree that it is really difficult to know when to draw the line on an activity!

Very sweet pic of brother Rupe watching over the injured Jemma. Guess even though the dogs have short stocky legs, that doesn't give them any extra protection against injury. Sure the cold doesn't help matters any, either.

I too am relieved to hear Jemma is feeling better. Good day to stay inside with the cold and wind.

We have 30-40 knot winds today. I decided it was time to stop being a big cry baby and bundled up and took the dogs for a long walk.

I appreciated Emilie's comments about calling it quits before the dogs do. We took a new path thru the woods along the creek by the dog park. We ended up in the corn fields by an old farm that leads back to the park. When we got to the farm we kept running into dog park pals and the dogs were running and playing and having fun. But it had been 2 hours out in the cold and wind so I pulled the plug.

When we got home both had water and crashed. Even Lulu doesn't want to be outside today.

Tomorrow we go back to herding lessons. Sure hope the wind stops by then!

I don't know what she does, but every now and then she does something and there is this great dramatic limping. There is no gradual improvement, one minute she's limping and the next she's fine. I can't figure her out.

This morning I applied Invisible Boot on all feet on both dogs. It's kind of like a softer Chapstick. It's still -20C with the windchill here and there is a ton of road salt out here. They were really good about me putting it on. Rupert went down 3 times on our walk - but he has very sensitive feet and it was the sharpness that hurt him. I think if this softens their feet over time, it will be less painful for them to walk in the salt.

Thanks for the vibes - until the next "episode" I think we are good. +TUP+

Is Invisible Boot help similar to the Paw Wax that Dylan gets on his feet, or Musher's Paw Wax?
