View Full Version : Maya's "special" surgery

I'm calling tomorrow to set up Maya's spaying, and I'm just trying to be completely prepared. I was really lucky with Dudley...he never bothered his stitches and didn't seem to be in pain. I know people have suggested onesies...but how does that work for a Cardi? Also, will it be best to keep Dudley and Maya separated until she gets her stitches out? Let me know what you all think...I really appreciate it!

Is it that time already; boy has time flown. With A onesie obviously, you would have to cut a hole for the tail after you put the shirt on so you could see where that would be. Maybe you won't need anything or the collar because she won't bother it. I have seen some "soft collars" on different sites.

I don't even know that she would wear a onesie to tell you the truth. She went dogatonic when I put the sweater on her and that was only for a little bit of time. Hopefully, she will just leave the stitches alone. I am concerned about having Dudley around her though. They play pretty rough sometimes and like to stampede through the house. When I get them new toys or bones, they will normally lay and chew on those for hours. Maybe that would work?

Well,
I don't have two dogs, but I would imagine that you will have to keep them from wrestling for a few days; but you will be home now that school is over, so you will be on "mommy duty"

I'm driving myself crazy with "mommy duty" already. I just don't know what to do with myself and it's only been a few days! Perhaps keeping two dogs separate will be enough to keep me on my toes, at least for a little while ;)

they recover amazingly fast- for the first few days you may have to supervise their play- but really if she is uncomfortable or feels pain from the stitches she will take it easy. I had those same worries with wicca-
As for a "onsie" or a coane- Wicca would not keep a cone on- I even tried putting it on a harness as she could get it off of a regualr collar- I tried a shirt and stuff aswell- I found it just bugged her more. She left it alone with nothing on- I just made usre to have plenty of chewies available and she was back to normal in no time.

Mojo was recently spayed and I did have to keep my two apart because minutes after returning home, Mojo charged Miss Gambler and Miss Gambler sent her rolling across the floor. As for the cone, my vet gave her a paper cone which she wore for 13 days without once fighting it, she didn't act like it bothered her it all, and it was paper soft. The vet had some problems with Mojo's stitches so we were lucky that the cone didn't phase her, she would have torn her stomach, no doubt about that. Ask about the paper cone.

we used a material soft cone for Dillon , sold to us by the vet, and oh what a disaster..not only could he still somehow manage to "squish it" against his softcrate to mush it up enough to get hisnose over the end so that he could still nibble at himself but he spent all his time trying to figure out ways to get the darn thing off, he HATED it! I took it off and just watched him ( literally stared at him for hours and hours  ) and stopped him from biting or licking and then at night , the cone went on... as i was tired from staring at him all day! I wish i had known about onsies , it would have been a much better alternative. ( remember dillon had TWO insicions - as he has one undescended testicle, so he had the normal insicion and then another one on his belly ( like a spay) poor guy, so if he was not trying to lick at one, he was trying to lick at the other! eitherway, with two dogs, i would definately use xpen or crates to keep them separated when you cannot supervise, just better to be safe than sorry...

So I have this coming up in four months, huh? Thanks for the tips ;) All I remember of Mitzie the old lab, who was a super-laid back pup, was that we just kept her in her crate and tried not to bother her for a few days....she never had any problems at all.

Jeni,
The only other thing I can suggest to you is these pants on the link. One of my friends used this on her dog after spaying and it worked by keeping the incision covered. They only cost about $12; about the same as those plastic cones the vet would give you and these pants velcro so you can adjust them and has the hole for the tail. You can get these at Petco or Petsmart. Maybe Maya won't need anything. Cody surgery was like Dillons also(more like a spay) because he had the undescended testicle also and he was always trying to lick down there - in his case I used the onesie.

It varies by pup. I would recommend keeping the two separate because together sometimes they will get so excited they forget to be careful, even if it hurts. However, I have had a lot of dogs spayed or neutered and I have yet to have to use a cone or onsie to stop them from messing with the stiches. I would say, see how she does... and if she just won't leave them alone then look into other options.

Jeni ~ I was really worried about Zia, too, because her and Zip play rough. I just pretty much kept my eye on her and didn't let them play. Zia didn't mess with her stitches at all. Sorry this wasn't much help.

neither Em or Chloe every bothered their stitches. Neither wore a cone or onsie - although I would have loved to put the onesie on them for the cuteness factor... guess I still could
both Girls laid around a few days and then went back to being their old self. As Emma doesn't play that much she didn't bother Chloe as she was healing.
but all corgis and family dynamics are different... paws crossed that Maya's recovery will be easy for all

Thanks for all the reassurance, guys, and a special thanks to Linda for taking the time to look up those pants. They look like they would be perfect if needed. I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed that she won't bother her stitches, but if I know anything about Maya, I just don't think it will be that easy. I'll definitely look for those pants just in case I need them. I'm definitely going to try and keep them apart because Mr. Brute, Dudley, is like a wrecking ball when he plays.
I think I was probably way too lucky with Dudley when it came to his neuter. He came home ready to go. The vet even let him leave early because he was up, moving around, and barking like a mad man to get out of that crate!

Jeni,
Well. hopefully she won't need anything; maybe she will be too busy with other things to think about the incision. You had mentioned some new bones which is a good idea - Do you ever use a kong with her?
And as for those pants, I am not sure on the price, but I had thought my friend said $12 - I know every store can vary. Hopefully you won't need anything, but most pet stores carry something similar to that.
I had even tried a Toddler pull up on Cody  but since I could not adjust it, it would not stay up - he really needed a tail to help hold it in place. His incision seemed to bother him. The onesie for the most part worked - however, one morning when I came to get him out of his crate, he had somehow worked himself completely out of that onesie - I would have liked to have video taped that - he must have been very busy during the night.

Maybe you could just threaten her with it . . .
Better not chew at your stitches, or mommy will be forced to get you one of these . . .
Good luck to you and Maya. Definitely keep a super close eye on her for the first day or two. If you discourage / redirect her enough during those first days, that might be enough. It worked for Jackie (plus the onesie). After a few days, she would look like she was going to chew on them, then stop and give me a guilty look (Oops! That was a close one!). :CUTE:

Maya's surgery has been scheduled for Thursday. I'm so nervous about it. I drop her off at 7:30, and they keep her overnight. I know with Dudley, they called to tell me when he was out of surgery and how he was doing, so I'm betting that they'll do that again with Maya.
I opted to do the laser surgery since it is supposed to cause less pain, swelling, and bleeding. They suggested an IV with warm fluids in case something should go wrong, she would already have the IV ready. I'm just really hoping that everything goes as smooth as possible. Keep your fingers crossed and please send Maya lots of good vibes.

Well, I dropped her off at the vet first thing this morning. I was hoping that if we were the first ones there, she would be done first and would have more time to recuperate. I left her with her favorite toy, a blankey, and some food in case they feed her sometime after it is all over. I opted to get the micro chipped at the same time, especially since if either of my dogs would run away, it would be Maya...she just loves to go.
I really hated leaving her there though; it was so sad when the vet was taking her away and Maya was trying to follow me--okay, apparently I am a great big sap this morning. I'm going to watch TV with my big brutus, Dudley :)

Maya will be fine! When you pick her up I suspect she will be so thrilled to see you she will forget she's a bit groggy from pain meds.
I will never forget picking Tucker up. He come trotting out with the E collar on his head, his eyes were glassy, his toungue was hanging out and a big smile on his face.
He kind of looked like he was saying "Whaaaassssuuuuuppppppp!". Of course, when the Vet showed me his incision and a bit of swelling, I almost cried.... But he was no worse for the wear!
Looking forward to hearing the good news update!

When I brought Jackie home from her spay, we took a long reat together on her crate pad . . . until hubby came home and chuckled at the sight of us snuggled up on the pad in the middle of the kitchen. And let's not even mention how, when the vet told me she bled a little more than usual, I freaked out and thought she had VWD!!!
Still keeping my fingers crossed for her. She's a tough little girl, she will do fine.

Then, I'm going to wal-mart (closes thing to a "pet store" around here) to buy a large variety of toys before I get her. She loves getting new things anyways...carries them around proudly.
It has been so quiet without her. I don't think Dudley quite knew what to do. If anybody mentioned her name, he would run to the door and bark, but it was nice to have one-on-one time with him--my big brutus ;)

jeni, My guess as to Dudley's behavior is probably that Maya smells " funny" to him... maya smells like the vet office, and he can probably smell blood and antiseptic ... and that is probably why he is keeping his distance from her... as the smells wear off and she smells like home again, he will probably be just fine with her..
