Anyone going?

The National Specialty for Cardigans is in Gettysburg PA this April. I see the premiums have been posted.

http://cardigancorgis.com/ns2010/premiums.asp

I am planning to enter Lulu in herding on Saturday and Sunday and then hopefully in Novice B Agility on Monday and Tuesday. We can commute to herding but we will probably stay at the hotel site for agility.

I took Tucker to the Pembroke National Specialty when it was in Rhode Island a few years ago, it was great fun.

BTW... the Pembroke National Specialty is in Lancaster PA in September.

Mark those calendars!

Susan

I am and I am hoping you can run Rupes in Herding!!!!!

If I can get Lulu thru the Cardi Nationals I think I may try again to run Tucker in Ht and PT at the Pemmie Nationals.... I need to get him to leave the sheep poo alone!!!!!

That will be our training!

Oh, you lucky people! The Pem national is is in Pennsylvania for the next 2 years! I read on the corgiherders list that the Cardi nationals will be offering cattle for herding also. Too scary for me, but I got to see a great Pem work cattle at a herding trial and it was very fun to watch.

That's what I'm hoping for Connie - I hope to come for a week - I'll be driving with the beasts. I don't think I'll trailer it, and if Susan's offer still holds, we'll be bunking with our pals Tucker and Lulu. :BIGGRIN" (There will be several Xpens strategically deployed so that Rupert will be accommodated.)

I am also hoping to be at the Pem National in September, and hopefully I will be running either Apple or Malcolm in agility. I probably won't be there for the whole week due to a lack of vacation time, but I hope to be there a couple days at least and would love to see everyone.

Deb, I can finally get to meet your dogs in addition to meeting you!

Well, I definitely want to meet up! Without or with Cooper in tow. Wouldn't take him to the meet as it would be too over stimulating for him. Fun to meet Jemma and Rupert in person, see the Sutulu bunch again and anyone else who can make it!

We definately plan to be at the herding events for Cardis to cheer our friends Susan and Lulu on, and from info on the Philly Area Corgis list there will be others there too. And I'm taking the whole week off for the Pems in Lancaster. I've already started a shopping fund - they do have lots of great things at the Pems national as I recall from previous years.

We must plan a get together - it will be fun to see everyone again.

I finally got the confirmations for agility and herding last night.

Lulu is an alternate for Saturday, we are fine for Sunday.

I'm kind of bummed since I thought I sent it early enough.... I didn't send it the day entries opened like I do for many agility trials around here.

But it is OK... I don't think we are ready any how, but we will do our best at the Sunday trial.

We are fine for agility. I sent Tucker's registration late but he got in for the all breed day too.

The Cardi National got of to a great start with herding. The all breed trial was Saturday, an perfectly gorgeous day.

Lulu's Aunt Olivia had an amazing run in Started, took first place and went high in trial!!!! A lovely, peaceful, perfect run. The Started sheep were pretty flighty, I am very relieved I stayed off the alternate list.

Today is day one of 4 straight days (forecasted) of rain. Lulu had her first Started run on sheep. We placed 2 out of 9 dogs!!!! I was a nervous wreck, Lulu did wonderfully. We "skimmed" 2 of the 3 obstacles, Lulu went to her left on her out run and I called her off ( it was exactly what she should have done, I was so shocked because as hard as I tried, I could NEVER get her to go to her left!) but the moment I realized she made the right decision her dopey handler just let her run. And she worked those sheep all round the course.

So we got around the course, penned the sheep, and only had one little run away which she rounded up nicely.

Her good buddy Larry (the cutest cardi ever!) took first and her Aunt Olivia took 3rd.

So we are not soggy in Gettysburg, Lulu has to be measured at 7 am (her first AKC trial). Both dogs run in the All Breed trial Monday them just Lulu on Tuesday.

SO I'll check in tomorow if we don't drown! Can't wait to shop!!!! Always cool stuff at the specialty!

We are home from Gettysburg! And dry... finally!

Let's say Agility at the National was ...not pretty!

Let's see.... Monday morning it was pouring rain. I started the morning arguing with the Judge when she measured Lulu (for her Jump Height Card) and said she was over 11 inches high and had to jump 12 inches. I would never question a Judge, I think it's wrong - they have a tough job to do, but I have also been around long enough to see dogs taller than my two running regular 8 inches (not Preferred). I went thru this with Tucker and had to fight to get him at 8 inches.

She measured her several times and finally relented, said she was a hair over 11 inches at the withers, but said "good luck" finding a 2nd judge to give her an 11 inch measurement.

Tucker had his first Jumpers run in Open. He ran clean and fast and Q'd with First place.

Then came Lulu's first Jumpers in AKC.... What a nightmare!!!! She threw a tantrum like a spoiled child. She barked at the top of her lungs every step of the way. God knows how many faults she had. It was horrible! I expected her to roll over on her back and flail her arms and legs. Ughhhhh

Thankfully she went out in the afternoon and ran a very nice Standard Course, did the teeter and weaves, and took 1st with a Q.

Today was breed only. Her Jumpers run was beautiful but she knocked a bar. NQ. Yuck!

She als NQ'd her Standard run when she bailed off the teeter. The Judge said finish your run, so we did. It was a beauty.

AND.... to really make an exit.... She jumps the final bar, jumps onto a small table that held the leashes, then lept into the lap of one of the workers in the scoring booth!!!!!

I almost wet myself. I doubled over laughing, she got thunderous applause (of course!), and the poor and very surprised ring crew cleaned Corgi kisses off her face. That's my girl!!! Leave 'm laughing!

Neither of my dogs have ever been visitors to ring crew. Tucker used to go pose in the middle of his runs for his friend Frank the Photographer. I have no idea what she was thinking!

Today several of the people who have dogs from Lulu's breeder all got together for a photo. Lulu hadn't seen her sister Skunk since I brought her home at 12 weeks. There was some recognition but nothing stood out.

She also saw two of Holly's dogs, Luther (from another litter) who was a puppy with her and Sabrina who bossed all the puppies arund. She took one look at them, rolled over on her back and squealed with happiness! Lulu gave up the submissive stuff about 2 years ago. She clearly remembered Luther and Sabrina. She was loving him and licking his face - she doesn't do that.

We got together for a group picture, when I get it I'll post it. Should also get video of Tucker's Jumper's run..... haven't seen it yet.

So the National Specialty goes on. It was great to see some people I haven't seen in awhile, each dog came home with a Q, and I am thrilled beyond belief with Lu's 2nd Place in Started Sheep.

We're home and we are dry! Now I can look forward to the Pemmie National in Lancaster in the fall.

THanks for posting the videos, Susan, I really enjoy watching them all.. Lulu looks like she is having fun and did well. Tucker was just truckin' along on those jumps and did great on the weave poles.

Olivia was really a pretty cardi! she seemed so calm through the run..or what really looked like a walk. so ... steady , calm and quiet.

Susan, I loved the videos! You are a really good handler, I love how calm and steady you were in Lulu's herding run. You both did a really good job, Lulu was assertive but not aggressive. I was impressed by her lack of circling in her HS run, is that natural for her or have you spent a lot of time training that, like I will be doing??
Great job in agility with Tucker, but I'd really like to see Lulu's leap into the ring crew lap!
Congratulations on a great showing at the national!

Have yourself video'd!

Man, does that point out what mistakes you are making.

At the herding clinic the week before the Nationals I was talking with a woman I had seen train with her Smooth Collies. She did a great job with her dogs and when I mentioned it to her she said "I'm no longer yelling at him". I made a mental note of that.

So our last lesson just before the Nationals we went in, did our run, it went smoothly but I did something wrong penning the sheep. Our instructor said try it again.

Well... the wheels fell off the bus. The sheep were running amuck, Lulu was chasing them and not working, and I started yelling. I caught myself, I could hear the anxiety in my voice, but too late. Lulu headed, tail down, towards the gate and refused to come back.

So now I am an absolute maniac, I thought "I've ruined my dog, and we are going to bomb out at the nationals". All week I told myself to shut up and let Lulu do her thing.

And as I watched a lot of melt downs in the sheep pens with dogs and handlers, some of the worst were when people were screaming at their dogs. For all her bossiness, Lu is a very soft dog. Yelling is absolutely not the answer.

I have to keep watching Barb Miller's run with Olivia. That is absolutely the way to go.

But it is fun isn't it!!!!

sutulu
04-29-2010, 08:05 AM
Oh... the circling....

That's one of the things we have worked on. To the point of almost losing the sheep, my instructor has me pushing her back around and not letting her cross in front of me.

What we really have to work on is her working further back and not on top of me. She was doing that really well back in January but after the snow storms hit and we couldn't train, she started working too close. I let it go because I just wanted to get us thru the nationals.

So we are going to go back to basics.

He finally got a decent agility shot of Lulu coming out of the tunnel in the Standard Run (Novice).

I have great shots of Tucker taken by show photographers but Lulu is always out of place. I have to E mail Rich and order it.

He had never photographed herding before. I think he's hooked. He and his wife have Dobes and he is planning to get the Dobe out to a clinic one day and try him on sheep.

Swears his next dog will be a Corgi!
