View Full Version : Dale's overbite

I just looked in Dale's mouth and he has a hole. He is scheduled to be neutered and teeth pulled Friday morning. Please pray for him. I have been checking his mouth but I thought we had more time. I should have looked sooner and better. I looked the other day and it looked fine. I have been more worried about him getting his teeth pulled then having damage. +SAD+ He is such a sweet little boy. I am calling the vet first thing in the morning to try to move it up a day or two.

I am sorry to hear that, but glad to hear your surgery is this Friday - The best you could hope for is Thursday with tomorrow being Wednesday already.
If there is any chance they can get Dale in tomorrow when you call, you will have to make sure he did not have any food after a certain time tonight, and no breakfast tomorrow. Are the vets on call in the evening Bonnie, maybe if you try tonight, you may end up getting to talk to your vet.

Dale has an overbite that causes his tooth to essentially drill a hole in the roof of his mouth (at least that's what my understanding of it is). Poor Bonnie had the same problem with pawsitively perfect Chip as well. Of course, both are still perfect regardless of any silly old overbite ;)

No there isn't anything I can do but I will definitely call the Vet in the morning and possibly move his surgery up to Thursday morning. If not, it will be Friday morning. He is acting normally but they don't show their pain. I just am worried that it will break through the roof of his mouth so we will pray that won't happen and have faith everything will be ok. Thank you all for your support - it will be a long two or three days.

Bonnie:

I will be thinking of you and Dale. It is very hard not to worry about them, especially when you know how serious it could be. But let's all think positively that the worst won't happen and that Dale will have a relaxing couple of days before he goes in for his surgery.

Give both the chipmunks lots of love from me, Tuck, and Lu!

Dale will be neutered, have both bottom adult canines extracted, have the two top baby canines extracted as they didn't fall out on their own, have the hole in the roof of his mouth cleaned out and stitched closed. I am not going to have him microchipped as I don't want to add anything extra as this is alot for a little one. I am thinking positively that no permanent damage has been done to his mouth. I probably won't hear from the vet until late morning. Good news is I do have Friday off so I can stay home with him. I debated postponing his neutering but I talked with his breeder last night and we both agreed one anesthesia would be better then two times around.

LOL - Millie had her first surgery in 10 years this past January. I had no idea how attached I was to this creature until I dropped her off and came home to an empty house. I had never been here without her in all that time - it was horrible! I paced and worried until they called to let me know she was fine. But I didn't completely relax until I finally was able to pick her up. I think I learned something about myself that day.

Bonnie, I forget - how old is Dale? I have Link's impending neuter date creeping up. Sigh. They grow up so fast.

Poor little Dale. I remember seeing him for the first time at the picnic and what an active little fella he was. I know all this will be good for him, Bonnie and the neutering will help in so many ways. One great benefit from that is that there's a good chance he'll never experience prostate cancer and that's a definite plus for his longivity.

As you know, everyone's heart is with you today and although he may be weak and sore from all this, it'll never have to be done again. His youth will help mend those wounds in no time and that's another great plus for him is that he's so young.

Update whenever you can and hear anything about his progress. I know you'll have plenty of soft goodies for him when he gets home and remember to hug him real good for me as well.

Thanks all - I still haven't heard anything and keep telling myself no news is good news. I know this will be a rather lengthy procedure with all the work she has to do. I keep seeing Dale with his head popped out of the crate in the back seat looking at me driving down the road. Dale turned 6 months on the 28th. Keep the vibes coming. Another family just lost their 6 month old pup (a rescue from the shelter) who had heart disease and he didn't survive the surgery. Boy am I depressed today. I will be so glad when he is home and healed. I wish this was a standard neuter it would be so much easier. I hope I am doing the right thing having his teeth pulled.

Dale is still very sleepy. He ate a little of the canned eagle pack puppy food and I gave him his meds. He had a little blood around his mouth and he was shaking. Scared me to death. I am still shaking. Anyway, I wrapped him in a light blanket and turned the ac off. It is going to be a long night. Poor little thing. He still hasn't peed but I don't think he has much fluid in him to pee. I am still very worried about him. Chip goes over and lays down by the x pen some.

Not sure if he's sleepy due to the anestetic or the meds. But if it's anestetic getting him out in the fresh air will help. A tip I picked up from one of my vets years ago.

often times shaking has to do with the anesthesia wearing off, and the fact he is on pain meds too might have an effect... I know how scarey it can be to watch them when they are not feeling 100%... Poor little guy...

Bonnie,

I am glad to hear that Dale is back home safe with you. Anesthesia can affect them for several more hours even after they get home; ( I remember when my last dog had surgeries and I would pick her up about 4 p.m. and she was still groggy and dazed for most of the evening) so don't worry too much as he was under anesthesia longer since it was not just a neuter. I bet he will be much more "chipper" in the morning after a good nights rest. Glad that his teeth were taken care of. And remember, he will eat when he is hungry and his tummy may be unsettled for a while.

Shaking is from the anesthesia and the meds. It's ok. And being chilled is from the same thing. Until he's fully recovred from the anesthesia he won't be able to regulate his body temps as he usually does.

Feed him very lightly, and too much water might make him vomit. (Also anesthesia.)

Again, fresh air should help. I'd try several short outings just to get the fresh air in him and the anesthesia out.

Dale ate a little more soft dog food, drank some water, and finally went potty outside. He even walked to his special place for taking care of his business and waited for me to pick him to carry him back inside. He is sleeping again but no more shakes and doesn't need a blanket to stay warm. I am going to offer him a little more water just before bed and take him back outside for potty. He stands very still so I can pick him up so carefully. Both ends are sore. Poor little boy. His little tummy looks sunk in where he hasn't ate hardly at all today.

Emilie thanks for asking.

Dale is doing much better this morning. His eyes don't have that "higher then a kite look" He slept all night and woke up about 6:00 and I took him outside and he went potty. All plumbing is working. Yaah. He drank water and I gave him some canned food (I warmed it just a tad to take the cold out of it before I gave it to him. I thought the cold might hurt where he had his teeth pulled. I softened some of the kibble and hand fed him some of that. It is easier for him to eat out of my hand. Spoiled baby. I closed off the deck so he couldn't attempt the stairs and he walked around some, then I put him up in one of the lawn chairs and he curled up there for awhile. Chip wants him to play so bad and Dale almost wanted to. I gave him his meds and he is back in the x pen taking a little nap. Those x pens are great. Dale isn't really happy about being in there but he has to be kept real quiet until late afternoon. I slept well last night surprisingly, I think I was exhausted. I had talked with Dale's breeder a couple of times yesterday and last night. She told me to call her day or night if I got worried about anything and I think that helped just knowing I had someone to turn to. She worked in a vet's office for many years so has much experience. I am not as stressed this morning so all is well in our household. Now how is that for an update. I took a pic of Dale sleeping upside down and will post that later today.

Dale is doing excellent so far. He doesn't seem to be in any pain although I have been giving him his pain pill every 12 hours just to be on the safe side. He is eating good, walking around the yard and sleeping good. He isn't licking his incision hardly at all. His mouth still looks red but I think that is to be expected for a few days. He did run across the yard today playing with Chip but when I called him back, he came right to me. I have been sitting out on the deck with him so he can wander around and get exercise and I walk him around the yard too. He was grumbling at me tonight because he couldn't get his own way so I would say he is on the mend.

I have been sitting out on the deck with him so he can wander around and get exercise and I walk him around the yard too. He was grumbling at me tonight because he couldn't get his own way so I would say he is on the mend.

Great to hear! So glad everything is a-okay.

Glad to hear Dale is talking back--always seems like a good sign when it comes to corgis ;) In all seriousness, it is great to hear that he is healing and has bounced back from his surgeries. I think it's fair to say that you deserve a break from any and all medical issues concerning your pets.

Glad to hear that he is feeling good and not bothering the stitches. The fact he is talking back to you and grumbling, he must be feeling pretty decent!

Glad to hear Dale is on the mend. And really glad he is leaving his stitches alone. That can be a problem for them. He doesn't sound like he is uncomfortable.

He is doing exceptionally well. This morning I didn't give him his pain meds as it gives him the hiccups but he is doing fine. The hardest part now is not letting him be to active but not trying to baby him either.

Those stitches should fall out in about ten days, I would think and he won't have to worry about them again. Great news, Bonnie that your ru ru is doing good.
