View Full Version : Gizmo keeps peeing

Gizmo has peed in my bed twice in like the last month. And on my couch.
I had his urine tested a little over a week ago he got put on clavimox. The SEEMED to help but who knows.
I don't know what to do. He woke me up trying to cover it up and he he was DRIPPING in urine. It's just so not like him to do this.

I guess I would get him in to see the vet Elizabeth. Maybe the medicine isn't agreeing with him, maybe there is something physiologically wrong. Having been through what we have with Annie, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Maybe you could call in?
Good luck!!

I agree with Deb, I'd put a call into the Vet.
If Gizmo is eating, drinking & going out to pee on a routine there shouldn't be a problem, but of course there is.
Was it maybe that he needed to go out and was trying to wake you to let him out to pee & he couldn't hold it?
After my boys have their last potty break at 11pm they go to their open door kennels for the night, but the laundryroom is sectioned off with a babygate. They do not sleep in my bed or have free rein of the house at night so that we all get some good sleep. You might want to think about not letting Gizmo in your bed or on the couch during this problem. Pretty hard to clean up I am sure once the urine gets into mattress & cushions.+SAD+
Hope the Vet will have an answer for you, please keep us posted.

Our vet opens at 7 tomorrow for drop off, and so that's what I'll do. They thought it was something like just a normal bladder infection. And said if clavimox didn't work, we'd probably have to do xrays because there was some crystalization in his urine, and it was a little more acidic and a it had a bit of blood in it.
He was up until like 3 with us, and I picked his bowl at like 10. And he went out around 2 230. And at 7am when I woke up it was cold, and the way it was on him it was like he was asleep. The look on his face when I made him sit in the shower while I stripped the bed.
Thank god, I just bought a new comforter, so I had both of those on there plus both sheets and the matress pad. We got one that's something special to soak up liquid because I bought a new matress and they said if you get it wet it'll void the warrenty.
Side question: does this need a visit to the vet today? Our emergency vet, run by our vet, is only a wee bit more than our vet. And xrays and stuff are the same as they use the same equipment and such. Same staff and all.

If it were me, I'd take Gizmo into day. I know that you want to make him feel better as soon as you can, so why wait. Looking at it from a $ view, since it's only a 'wee bit more' than your regular Vet visits, it might also save you $ in the end if you have a big problem and need to throw anything away.

I agree with Barbara. Take Gizmo in today since the $$ aren't that much higher than a normal visit.
Have you ever heard of the ol' saying: Pay me now or pay me later? Sometimes the later can be the most expensive.

Well, I think the couch is already done for. I'm going to try to wash the cushion but I think it'd done in.
I'm going to have to take a nap though. As we didn't go to sleep till late, Gizmo was awake with us, and he woke me up at 7..
Then I'll give the vet a call and see how long the visit is.

While you are trying to solve the problem of why- save your furniture with diapers! Go to Walmart, and buy Assurance adult belted diapers. They aren't like pull-ups, more like regular ones but no velcro. They will pin or tape around a male corgi's body and catch plenty of urine. No diaper cover needed. He might try to take them off during the day but probably not.

Check out the cranberry capsules that Deb (Mtoy) was mentioning - even if he is going to the vet's - it's a good idea for maintenance.
I know people who have a yellow Lab who has had chronic urinary infections her whole life and she is on cranberry juice and capsules and is much better now.
Hope he is okay - even if you don't get the diapers, you may want to keep him contained in an area where you can easily clean-up after him for a bit.
Poor Giz - ((hugs)) buddy!!

Poor Gizmo! Corgis are usually so good about pottying properly, I think they hate it when they can't. Hope it's resolved quickly!
Nice heads up on the adult diapers, too. You never know when you may need something like that, I'm glad to know something to use if the situation arises.

All our vets around here who are open today have like 4 hour waits (I wonder why... CHOCOLATE, that's what they all said).
I'm going to call back around 6 or so and see what it is. They left a message, our doctor actually works the 6 - Midnight shift today. So hopefully the nurses will give him it and he'll give me a call.

Feel better Gizmo!
We only did a week of it. They might give him another week. They gave us a refill on it.
He's acting great. Chewing his bone, playing, we played hide and seek, and I hid in his crate, and Cody took him outside while I hid in there, and he ran past his crate, and he walked around for a few seconds and the nose went up in the air and he started sniffing and then BOOM into the crate he went! Kill the pighead, and hide-a-squirrel.
I'm trying to encourage him to drink water. We're going back to going out every hour. Maybe earlier. We'll probably go out every time out during our game we're watching tonight. NBA All*Star game! (I'm rooting for the West)

Gizmo did fine last night. I woke up and peeked in his crate, Cody is usually the one to let him out in the morning as I am not a morning person and Gizmo is not a morning dog. And he was on his back true corgi style. And I never see him like that. We're still goin to do xrays today to see how everything inside looks. But I have to drop him off for that, and I'm never good with, see ya soon bunners. Even last night thinking about dropping him off, I got tearey eyed. And I can't help but feel guilty for this. I'm his only source of relief. And he's always done so well with going outside. This is the most accidents in a single period I've ever has him have. I seriously got off easy with the puppy stuff.

It'll be after at least 1pm eastern time. So don't worry until then! I was going to take him this morning. But they didn't open for drop off until 7:30 am, And I have to be to work at 7:45AM and I was going to take my break, and take him, but my co-worker is sick so no one can cover the front area until 12:30, when I get off.
I'm going to try to discourage him from going to the bathroom until we get to the vet, so it's nice and freeesshhhhhhh haha. They joke and call him my little pee-er (but a naughtier word, that rhymes with kisser).
gogogiraffes
02-15-2010, 11:46 AM
Well we dropped him off. So we'll see in a few hours. They have to keep him a special area because of resource guarding. And the fact he's bit.. it was so sad leaving him there.

The vet just called and said that she thinks it's probably just urinary incontinence when he's sleeping. That he's going to sleep and his bladder is filling up and he's not realizing he needs to go. So we'll probably have to pick up his water earlier. She wants to pull blood and urine before she sends him home, and see how the urine turns out before she does x-rays if they aren't needed.
Kassie
02-15-2010, 03:37 PM
Hmmm. seems odd. I'm glad they're doing the blood and urine anyway.
Bobbie
02-15-2010, 03:48 PM
Normal, healthy corgis at less than 2 years can go all night without leaking or having any incontinence issues. If he were going over and peeing by the door, I might think the issue was making him wait too long. But something else is going on with Gizmo. If he were 12 and your vet said that, okay, fine. Not at 2. If your vet cannot find anything try another vet or a specialist (though I don't think they have veterinary urologists.)

Elizabeth - I'm glad too that you have an appointment for a second opinion. If that doesn't give you any answers, maybe you could find a university's veterinary medicine clinic. Here in New England we have the Tufts University school that runs an emergency clinic and also has all sorts of specialists. Worth a try maybe. Good luck we have our fingers and paws crossed.

Gizmo is acting great, he was super excited to see me when I got home, I even got an "arrroooooooooo" from him. And a super extra long frog dog.
Cody said when he came home, Gizmo wanted to drink a whole bowl of water. So that's the second full bowl he's had today.
Could it be diabetes? When I was younger our cat had diabetes? And I remember he was urinating on himself a lot.

02-16-2010, 04:30 PM
Did they test his blood sugar, Elizabeth? Has Gizmo been losing any weight? I would ask the vet to specifically test him for that.
I too had a diabetic kitty. My Misty cat went to the bridge 3 yrs ago at the age of 16 1/2. She was diagnosed with Diabetes at age 10. The signs that alerted us to a problem were that she was drinking a TON of water and urinating a lot... i am talking about flooding the cat box. she would pee these enormous clumps in the cat box. She was eating a lot and she was losing weight. Once diagnosed, she was managed for 5 yrs with proper diet, daily blood testing ( using a human glucometer- easy and painless for her) and insulin shots - in the end the diabetes wasn't what got her, it was kidney faliure so common in elderly cats.
I am glad you are getting a second opinion. Hugs to gizmo.
Jespah
02-16-2010, 04:33 PM
I don't think he would have diabetes at his age - he may just have been really thirsty. My dogs and cats drink more in the winter due to the heating and dryness.
The second opinion is a very good idea - you need to rule everything out.
Good boy Giz - a nice arrrrooooooo to Mom and Dad coming home is always nice. :CUTE:

02-16-2010, 08:10 PM
They did bloodwork but never called me back about it.. I'll call them tomorrow before I go to the vet.
Our cat who had it was about a 25 pound maine coon who was 17 years old. He only went a few months. The flooding the litterbox is why I thought of it with Gizmo because every time, it's been a HUGE puddle, I'm talking, a quarter of my full size bed, soaked through all 4 covered and such.
He hasn't lost or gained any weight, no food changes. Just he gets less water, picked up at 8:30 or 9pm or so. And he gets it back at 7am. I put it out before I leave for work. And Cody crates him 8:30am or so. I usually get back home by about 1 or 1:30. Then I leave for night classes at about 6 or so. And that's about when Cody gets home and the water gets picked up whenever I make it home. He's fed at 8am and 8pm.

Well we're at the vet (right now, the wonders of technology!) they did xrays and an ultasound, and he's so full of poop they can't get a clear view! I wonder if that had something to do with him, everything has been so compressed inside, and it shrunk his bladder down. We did have to up his food as he was losing a bit of weight. But this vet said the same thing, the urethral sphincter failin isn't what it should be. If they can't fin anything there is a specialist that will do a dye test to see where everything is. It could also be ectopic ureter.
I have to leave him for a few hours because he's so full. They have to do an enima.. We'll see how this turns out

She doesn't think so, he has no problem pooping. He just has alot of it. That was just my idea that it was compressing everything inside of him. She said, on the first xray they took they couldn't see ANYTHING. Ultrasound was a lot of shadowing. They took him out to poop, and he did. And that only emptied out his lower bowl, so we're waiting for his stomach (breakfast) and upper bowl, partially digested. To move. They were going to wait about 20 minutes, give him a chance to poop, x-ray him, and see where everything was then.

Gismo looks so sweet. Chester was in the same position soaking up the sunshine this afternoon. Gismo is warm and comfy and tired. My thoughts go out to you for tomorrow morning, when he is rested up.
I wonder why an enema is tried if the poop was higher up in the intestine. Doesn't work on humans in that situation either - I can speak for my mom after her back surgery. (Yes, Deb, more reasons not to have back surgery). But her doctor tried three. Your Vet is FAR superior than my mom's doctor. One probably didn't hurt, and might do the job. This Vet does sound great.
Let me guess the PF Changs had to be in the front seat, not in the back with Gismo? That is the way we'd have to do it.

Let me guess the PF Changs had to be in the front seat, not in the back with Gismo? That is the way we'd have to do it.
Opposite, Gizmo will push the middle divider down.. and hop up front. So we just put him up front, he sleeps in Cody's lap anyway. And the Changs went in the back.
I think his stomach emptied after a bit, so it started to push everything down, it just didn't have room. Maybe to help stimulate everything to move. Because she's trying to see kidneys and such.
Side note: The vet was doing the exam, and she turn him and started to play with his back end, lymphs and such in his thighs. I was saying how she wouldn't have a problem taking his temp once she got past the tucked nub as he just stands there.. and seems to not mind it... +EMBARRASED+ And she said, Aww I love a good nubbin! And so I had Gizmo's front, and was taking to him, and said, See her loves the nubs. And then we proceeded to talk about his nub for about 10 minutes. Because his nub is pretty black. And he's pretty red. It's funny, I'd like to see what his tail would look like sometimes.
Poor Gizmo, I can hardly see him on the bed, he's so withered and tiny after missing a meal. Seriously though, I hope you find out what the problem is. The vet sure sounds like a keeper!

This new vet has a thing online, where you can just kind of go through everything they have to offer, as well as order refills and such.
And I was just looking through, and clicked on urinary health and it says...
Regardless of the cause, it’s important to treat any form of urinary incontinence immediately.
So now I feel a lot better about taking him. That I'm not just some worry wart.

His insides are empty. And nothing is showing up. So they're sending off a sterile urine sample (ultrasound with a needle into the bladder). But his liver is slightly enlarged. His blood panel is coming back clean. No elevated liver enzymes or anything like that.
She's going to show the vet that saw him yesterday, and see what they think.

Waiting on the vet to call us today and see what she wants to do. Not sure is she's going to send us to the (urine) specialist or not. The vet who saw him Wednesday, is looking at the xrays today. And she'll decide what we need to do treatment wise for his liver.

Gizmo is back home. That's a comfort.
How was his night?
Vibes for figuring this out and a return to normal! <<<<<Gizmo>>>>>
Hugs to worried parents +FUZZHUG+
Just thought of something. Is Gizmo on any kind of supplements? Can't keep it straight as to who is on what. Sometimes supplements can have undesirable side effects. (thinking liver since much is processed there). Vets should be aware of any supplements and the amounts.

He did great through the night. Just slept. Didn't really want to eat. He's on The Missing Link, I told the vet, and he's on the amount for his size. I wonder if when I talk to her today, if we should cut it back. He also gets yogurt in his food.

Plain yogurt - not flavored or with sugar/sugar substitute added?
I don't use Missing Link but I would go over the ingredients with the Vet to see if any could cause liver enlargement.
Gizmo and there for you had a good night. That's good news, too!

Yup just plain yogurt. I'm sure gizmo would love some strawberry or something but that's not happening. Lol

Don't know if we say he was happy.... he has become quite the escape artist. He runs out the front door, and we live on a busy street. Lucky we have STOP WAIT down pat.
Gizmo got a new toy. When we get home from dinner I'll get pictures of it for you all.
Gizmo's urine has gotten lighter. Going to call the vet Monday since I didn't hear from her.
My "sister" has had some financial issues that we've been helping her out with. Her husband is a contractor and with all the snow, and the gov't being closed down, none of the permits have been approved so not work for them so they're going down to see my dad and her mom in NC.

I wouldn't trust a stop and wait. "NO:":
We also live on a street where there is a lot of fast traffic. And I know someone that lost her beautiful young lab 2 weeks ago when she was killed by a car. +SAD+

True! Be VERY careful.
Our street is pretty quiet, but so many people speed on it, and there are no sidewalks and lots of trees to hide things that may be running into the way. We have a strict rule that no dogs go out the front door without a leash. Never. The dogs know this, but still we never trust them by giving them the opportunity to get out that way.

If a dog is an escape artist out the door, I'd consider a gate/fence around my front door. Isn't that what you have Barbara? At our prior house we put a gadget on the back door to be an automatic closer to prevent escapes. Well I hope whatever was the cause has been flushed out and Gismo will continue to feel better.

Yes Merrie, we have a metal gate outside of the door and a wooden gate in the front foyer. It's very handy as it's short enough for us to step over, and also has a little swing door opening to let the dogs go in and out, we don't have to lift them. We also have 2 plastic baby gates.
How is Gizmo doing today? Better I hope.

It was only twice that he's done it so we're going to start just crating him everytime we open the front door. Because the second time I was only checking the mail... I was in my bathrobe.... that wasn't pretty...
Gizmo is doing MUCH better. He's trying to bury his treats he's getting. We're working on not running from mommy in our fenced in back area when it's time to go back inside. We had a nice day of weather so we went on a nice like 2 hour walk. Just stopping and sitting on benches.
Gizmo's new toy!

We got him the larger one, we have the smaller one, and there is one squirrel that is balding on the tail, and it's the first one, and the one Gizmo will carry around with him, and the only one of the small ones that squeaks still.
Tell that boy he needs to stay out of your purse!
Lucky, i just switched purses, to match my outing over the weekend. So that one is empty except some bills. That have been paid.

Sounds like good news for Gizmo. I hope that whatever was in his system has found the way out!
LOL at the nose in the purse. Cooper always checks my purse, pockets, and bags that come into the house. I have had more than one bill snagged and shredded by Mr. Cooper!
Been considering getting the hiding squirrels toy. Gizmo will go after the squirrels again and again? Doesn't tire of the game?

NEVER He seems to really like the seams inside of the trunk, trying to turn it inside out.
My dad and his girlfriend watched him and said for at least an hour he kept bringing the empty trunk to the end of the bed, and crying for them to put it back. He likes to go in through the top and pull them by their tails.

This is one of Dillon's favorite toys EVER!!! I do not leave it out, it lives in his alternate toy box ( the boys have one in the living room and a secondary one that is in the pantry.. this way i can swap toys out ). I pull the toy out for them to play with it about once or twice a week. He wants me to stuff the squirrels in ... and then he pulls them out by the tail... he likes when i squeak them and hide them under my leg (i sit on the floor) and then he tries to "dig them out" paws at the floor and at my leg and then i usually toss them so he can chase them down and get them.. he does bring them back so I can hide them back in the log. He could play this game for ever... he never seems to get bored.
I am glad that Gizmo seems to be feeling better. Did you hear back from the vet today? hoping for some answers ..

We just got the bees. Since it was the cheapest, and prime eligible on amazon. It'll be here Wednesday, I'll get a video of Gizmo opening it, since I think he'll do well with it.

I actually just missed her call today, I got the message at 6 when they closed the phones down. I'm going to call tomorrow before I go to work. I think she wants to focus on the liver now. Since the accidents haven't happen lately.

ALso glad to hear that Gizmo's accidents have stopped. Hope the liver issues are not serious.
Thanks everyone for your feedback on the squirrels-in-the tree toy. I will look for one for Cooper. I just gave him a "horsie" (unstuffed). Cooper is trying to kill the squeaker as I write. Hmmm Maybe a 30 minute toy.

We got this (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3204745&siteID=788QSvDQl0k-qhRo1qaDEuBr7NqGxET3BA) for Gizmo and it's survived quite a while. It has "chew guard" and also, petsmart has given me no trouble in taking back toys that haven't lasted.

It didn't really last with Winston, but Winston is the one that destroyed a kong... But there isn't any stuffing on the inside except the head. And the squeaker sounds weird.
