Danny & I, as always experience some new things in each Saturday's Obedience class.

We have now done proof work on Heeling, on and off lead, Long Sits & Long Downs, plus the Stand for Examination.
Figure 8's are ok, and my footwork for the About Turn is good now with the practice time I spent last week. My speed & walking-from-my-knees I can do without much thought now. And I didn't have to say no-sniff during any part of our exercises. His length of time for focusing on me is improving each week. Love it that he really pays attention off-lead heeling. Going to need that when we get to Open.

Now to convince my partner that our team work does not require him to have any food or toys for the duration of the entire set of required exercises in the ring. I mean, I didn't have any cheese to nibble on on while we were working.:NAH:

Verbal praise is going to have to make him happy to execute all until we leave the ring. I think the trick now will be to let him know Exactly when we are working. He is a very smart boy. I'm going to being to wearing an armband when we do our formal 15 minutes or so of training each day, and not give him a food or toy reward until we end the session, with me taking off my armband. Treats will be distributed about the house, (as if they weren't now?), I'll slip off the AB & reward. This is how I worked with Dyl Bob when we were competing. Having taught Danny the nose bridge touch at "Are you ready?" is also working very well.

The instructor said, "He doesn't need any food rewards now". Danny =

Proofing, distractions of people, dogs, food, toys and tightening up my performance too......Love Saturday Ob classes.

And that is why we are there.+YES+

NO treats in the ring! What are they saying, Danny?:SHOCKED: love Aine

I'm sure Danny will do fine. He seems so focused and with it already, he'll get the program. Wear an armband, eh? Is that why you see some people at dog shows with armbands on

No treats in the ring!

Anie, Danny did his lessons while we were out and about during his walkies and only got two treats! One was for a sit stay on a noisy street, & one was when we got home to the driveway, as is our tradition.

Plus, the treats were very, very tiny too. Party Mix by Friskies, for CATS!

Good job Danny boy and you too Barbara!!

Trixie and Murphey can't believe there's no treats for the training though.

Oh Danny the price you have to pay for being such a smart boy! "NO:": I'm sure Mum will still find lots of reasons to give you treats - let's hope they are Friskies though!!

Oh Danny, just think of Mum's homemade cheese cookies that can only be eaten out of the ring. You'll survive.

Dylan was rewarded with poached chicken breast after leaving the competition ring. I think that Danny & I will follow the tradition.

Chicken breast is a great motivator! You guys are doing really great.. Dillon doesnt like to work for "free' and cannot understand why the treats went away... he will work a while and then after a few stations he starts losing focus as there is no treat to regain his attention... i keep saying that if i could soak the end of his leash in chicken broth , we could probably do all 15 rally stations with no treats ! something tells me we would get in big trouble for sneaking food in the ring! LOL!

That's one of the nice things about APDT rally you can treat in the ring at certain points. One of my friends gives her dog a greenie at the end. she carries it in her pocket and just has to tap her pocket and say greenie and Cody is right back with her.

I thought hard about doing Rally first with Danny, mostly because I could talk to him during the exercises more than the food rewards. It was suggested to us by one of our trainers.

But after thinking it through, and remembering how easy our Rally classes were for Dylan after getting some Ob & Freestyle titles I'm going to do the same with Danny.

IMO, Rally is harder for the handler than straight Ob, but easier for the dog. If I continued to talk to him and food reward him through Rally, I think that it would take me that much longer to accustom him to 'not' getting verbal & food rewards in competitions. I mean that look he gets on his face already during training says..."But I got cheese for doing that last time Momma."+SAD+

The training plan of course depends on the personality of the individual dog and the handlers goals.
