View Full Version : The modified "flying squirell"

Gator has some of the most flexible hips I have ever seen. He does a full flying squirell position (legs all the way back) sometimes, but more frequently he does what I call the modified flying squirell where his back legs stick straight out to the side. Especially on tile... when he lays down now he just does the "splits" and lets the front end follow. Very odd looking. Here's a few shots to show you what I mean.

That is too cute! Dudley and Maya do the full out flying squirrel, but I have to say that Gator is the first dog I've ever seen do the modified version :) He sure does look comfortable though !

are you sure he isnt part Norwegian Lundehund ( puffin dog)? they have super flexible joints too! I have never seen a corgi lay like that! he is doing the splits! yeowch! I especially love the second photo where he is looking back at you ... he is a cutie!

by the way anyone interested in learning about a very old and rare breed of dog the lundehund can be seen on this site, note they are super flexible - there are cool photos and if you navigate around you can see the actual dogs, neat really: http://www.gluck.net/nln/html/mainpage.html

Wow Cheryl, Gator is really flexable!!

I've never seen a dog (or anyone) do that before.

Very interesting site Emilie, I'd never heard of that breed either.

I'll bet Gator would be a natural in Freestyle dancing to something from Little Richard and doing the split!! Competition here, Barbara, with Dylan!!

The Claude Van Dam of corgis! (not sure I got the actor's name right) He did the splits between two kitchen counters and I thought of that scene when i saw Gator's photo.

I've seen a few corgis do that. I bet he bunny hops when he runs too doesn't he?

I've been intrigued by Lundehunds for a good while and would be interested in perhaps getting one someday. Lundehunds, Valhunds and Buhunds are all corgish is "look" and there is some speculation Lundehunds might be foundations behind Pembrokes.

Thanks for posting that Debbie, that was one of the things about the lundehund that i wondered-if they might have been part of the development of the corgi... there is something about them... a resemblance of sorts. and what an interesting dog... has an extra vertibrae in their neck that enables them to tip their head back and touch their back with the top of their head... only one other mammal can do that ... the reindeer! very interesting dog for sure... I discovered them a while back and actually looked at them as a possiblity for our perfect dog, and as i did my research i realized that they would be so far out of my league for a first time dog owner, that i ran (not walked) away! LOL!

Haha, I remember that scene!

Wow, I thought that Trevor could get 'em spread out but Gator takes the prize, for sure!

Wowie. That is flexible stuff. If Gator did the regular flying squirrel, he looks kinda like Benny (save for the tail). Cool stuff! He must have ultra long ligaments.....

(btw, we got a baby gate too! same same!)

See here...Benny sometimes does half modified flying squirrels...i.e. one leg up, one leg straight.

Here, I got him doing it right. Okay, I admit. I cheated. Haha... ;)

Ha, Benny's so cute, zephyr! :CUTE:

That's one of Trevor's flying squirrel positions. too - feet out at a 90 degree angle. I think it gives him traction when he's chewing his nylabone.

I just meant that he really smiles and REALLY shows his teeth, and that he would make a great toothpaste commercial.

Oh. DUH. Haha...Benny, the toothpaste commercial dog celebrity. i think he'll do anything for food and if the toothpaste tastes like food, of course!

Actually, I never brushed his teeth before just give the fella good ol' nyla bones. ;)
