View Full Version : US Canned Pumpkin Shortage

I've seen on some of the Corgi lists people talking about not being able to get canned pumpkin. I haven't had that experience up here, and I checked when I bought mine for the week, it's Stokely's - but it's a Canadian product and my grocery store has tons.

If there is anyone in PA that would like some, it's $1.19 Canadian for a can that is 14 oz. I can easily toss a case in the car when I come down.

Let me know if you are interested and I'll bring some - other than for my two down when I come in 3 weeks.

Now I do wish we were coming! I read an article the other day that said Libby's US had 6 cans in it's inventory! WE haven't found any since Jan. We were stocked up, but have been out for months now!

Usually I have a few cans on hand but it has not been stocked in the local Market Basket during the summer of '10. After the holidays, I generally find it on sale and stock up then. June

There's not a shortage here in our area. We use the Libby's and there's always plenty at the local Winco, Safeway and Rays markets. I wonder if the problem is in larger metropolitan areas?

Maybe an east-coast US issue. Odd.

Too bad you aren't on the way to PA Kassie, I'd toss a case out the door on our way by.

It does seem to be an east coast and Midwest issue, plenty out here, too.

Deb I'll take 3 cans.

Sorry, that I ask, but what is so special on canned pumpkin that you want it so badly?

Jespah
08-29-2010, 03:05 PM
No problem to ask at all!

A lot of us feed about a tablespoon of raw canned pumpkin (no spices or any other ingredients) in our dogs meals to help keep their bowels working well. For some reason, it seems to help with constipation and with diarrhea - it's an overall healthy addition to their diets. Some people just like to keep it to have in case their dogs have an issue and only use it then.

I add a tablespoon of low fat yoghurt and the pumpkin with a little warm water and mix in their dry kibble. I like them to be healthy, but I also want them to enjoy their food. I enjoy mine. :BIGGRIN"

Darn !! Deb i wish you were coming to CT!!! Decent prices! I am down to 10 cans... and hoping that they start canning the new pumpkin growing this season soon!!! I have cleaned out 10 different grocery stores in my area of all the pumpkin... and The last place that i found 15 cans, i cleaned them out! I saw one lonely can at my local little grocery store last week - it was the organic farmer's market variety... and the price tag on this 15 ounce can... $3.99 !!! I nearly fell over! That is a HUGE mark up... the most i have ever seen that brand before was $1.99 and i thought that was rediculous. I used to get the libbys and one pie brand for about $1.50 a can normal price and would get lucky and find it on a huge sale for $1.00 a can!

Anyway, i hope they get producing... when i find it... i will be buying it in bulk ( like stocking up for the year! ) so far i have not run out of it but don't want to as my boys do so well on it... and they love it!

That is so nice that you are willing to bring in cans of Pumpkin.. will the border patrol folks give you trouble for bringing in all that pumpkin?

Emilie

Well, Emilie - the Nationals aren't that far to come to meet-up with a whole gang of Corgi pals. :BIGGRIN" And git some pumpkin.

Nope, the border meanies should be fine. As long as it is canned, I'm pretty sure I'm fine. I'll double check though. I'm sure a lot of you remember when my dog food was confiscated last summer - couldn't prove that it wasn't from an animal that produces milk. I was this close to suggesting he try it.

I also like to add it so that Connor feels like he is getting more food. I would feed yams but all I can find are filled with sugar and other stuff, no plain yams. I know I should cook my own but I hate the smell.

We were told here (wisconsin) that we wouldn't be seeing any pumpkin until at least October!

Dillydoodle
08-29-2010, 03:50 PM
hmmm... food for thought... it is kind of far... (5 + hours away) and i would have to take time off of work to go... and i dont see that happening right now.. i really WANT to go- I do think it would be such fun .

Glad that the border patrol folks should be ok with the pumpkin. so the deal with dog food is that if the bag is opened and has anything in it that could be a beef product they will take it away? that kind of stinks.. I told matt that i would love to take a trip to Canada at some point in the next year or so and he was concerned about the dogs having to be watched... that is when i told him that they would come! he didnt realize that we could bring dogs over the border... that the only issue would be with their food.. But if you bring over an unopened bag, they are ok with that?

sorry , dont want to hijack this pumpkin thread!!!!

Ours usually come in the middle of September but who knows how long it will take before it's on the shelves. I can just see us in the middle of the baking aisle calling people saying the canned pumpkins in it's in. :)

Emilie - come the Friday, go home on the Sunday. Lots of great herding to see.

I had my dogs' dry food in a plastic container. told him when he asked that it was chicken, and that I know I couldn't bring food in from any animal that suckles it' young. According to the US agriculture site, that would include camel kibble. So, no I couldn't prove it - but, as you said, how do they know the open bag would have what it says on the outside - inside? My dog food comes in 30 pound bags, I wasn't about to take that camping!

Betsie - you should get people to start a pumpkin watch group - you can all be on the alert!

Ok people, I'll say it again (with even more info) - pumpkin is a squash, and even some "canned pumpkin" is actually canned hubbard squash just called pumpkin. Anyway.... here is what you do:

Buy a squash, the hard, autumn type (acorn, turban, hubbard, etc).
Cut it open, scoop out the seeds.
Cook it (microwave, oven, boil, steam, etc).
Scoop it out of the shell. If it's extra juicy or you boiled it, drain in a colander or strainer.
Use it, freeze in small portions for later use, whatever.

It's so easy! (and it tastes so much better)

Wow, I knew there was a pumpkin shortage from last year. I bought extra cans when I found them. I have 4 cans and I am hoarding them. Hope they will still be good at Thanksgiving.

Yep, it says under ingredients "pumpkin, squash". The consitency seems to vary a lot as to it watery-ness. Sometimes it's an intense orange and thick texture, othertimes much more watery.

If I had trouble getting it, I'd make it myself Deb.

Barbara - we have ED Smith too in the large cans, but it's cheaper for 2 cans of the smaller Stokely than the one large can of ED Smith by 30 cents, so I buy that.

We have a couple of other much cheaper brands here too Deb, but Dyl Bob only wants ED Smith, and it's $4.59 for the 796ml can.

But if that's what Dyl Bob wants......+WUBCLUB+

One Halloween I did cook up a pumpkin and freeze it, but had to feed them so much more of the pulp that what they get from the concentrated in the cans.

Mind you, they didn't complain.

There is NONE to be had in the Southeastern US as far as I have been able to tell. We couldn't even make pumpkin pies for Christmas last year! I live in NW Florida and have been to south Florida, Atlanta, Birmingham and have even asked my husband a long-haul truck driver to keep an eye out for me! He hasn't found any yet either.

I was just organizing cupboards and found 2 big Costco-sized cans. I'll have to be sure and save those for the holidays in case the shortage spreads out west! Hopefully Midge won't have any tummy trouble before Thanksgiving or I'll have to sacrifice one!

Do you all buy sweet potatoes and dehydrate them? We got a dehydrator, and wanted to do some treats for Gizmo with his LID, which is pumpkin, potato and sweet potato. Didn't know what anyone else did.

Yup, you cut them up with the slicer part, and then just pop it in the microwave for a few minutes, and bam, chips!

Cody LOVESSS making jerky with it. I, not so much of a fan. I want to try fruit, just need to take the time to do it.

I am not going to be too greedy and take all their pumpkin since there are others who might want to have pumpkin again!!! So i will pick up a case a week for the next 5 weeks and i should have enough for the year!

incidently , i never ran out completely... as i found a few odd sources and cleaned them all out... so i still had 8 large cans left ... but phew... so glad the shortage is done!

Ummm don't wanna sound dumb but does it have to be canned? If it's canned it has been cooked during the processing. I bake then puree my own & freeze it to make cheesecakes, pies & muffins all year. I'd just make smaller baggies!

JodyConvenience and sometimes it is freezer space problems. Pumpkins aren't sold here except at Halloween. I don't grow them because they require water, a good amount. Also they "say" that the small pie pumpkins are the ones to use, and those cost more. What pumpkins do you recommend to use for baking?

pokabee
09-17-2010, 09:10 PM
For pies and stuff the smaller sugar ones but I have used my halloween ones (I carve that morning) they are just a bit stringier take longer to puree. I live in the PNW so no shortage of water here.

mtoy

Merrie - canned pumpkin is frequently made from squash:
what is canned pumpkin (http://www.slashfood.com/2005/10/24/canned-pumpkin-is-it-really-pumpkin/)

You can cook a whole squash in a crock pot. Put it in on high (no holes, don't bother cutting) for about 2 hours until tender. Take it out, let cool, cut it and clean out the strings/seeds.
