View Full Version : Yelping and barking for food and attention
What's the best way to handle this? I'm trying to ignore him, is there a better way? Not everyone (cough, husband) in the house goes along with this, so he ends up being rewarded for it. And sometimes it goes on longer than I can wait. He is not in *need* of anything at the time, just trying to get his way. For example, I just put together a pan of lasagne in the kitchen. It's not his dinner time but because I was handling food and it smells yummy he wants some. If I cannot wait it out I call him to me, tell him to sit or down for a few seconds, then let him go. Many times this breaks the obsession but many times he eventually goes back to it.
This kind of related to my other problem but I'll make a separate thread for that one...

You must be losing your mind! :ARG:
Unfortunately, even if he gets his way just ONE time, he will continue to do it. You HAVE to ignore it if you want to extinguish it . . . and it will get worse before it gets better. Not what you wanted to hear, I know. Earplugs might help.
Maybe there is someone with a "sunnier" solution.
ETA: Maybe some kind of training collar for your husband?

So Link is barking and whining for food while you are cooking - one suggestion - before you begin to make your meal, could you get Link busy with a kong or some food stuffed "thing" - and then go about your business making your family meal.
If you do it Before you start, it won't look like he is being rewarded for "his behavior"

I had that same problem with Digger. Every time we sat down to eat, he would start barking and when he barked his two little front feet would come off the ground. I always ignored him but my husband would feed him and that is how it started and we never did break him of it. Husbands! I have no solution for you but I do sympathize.

Has anyone tried the following technique with their hubbys. I attest to it's effectiveness and all hubbys just LOVE when you do this....
Nag. Nag a lot. And make it constant. Hubbys are BIG fans of that... :TWITCHY: +SPIN+

what's wrong with the old 2x4 method?? for the husband of course. For the puppy- Linda's suggestion is exactly what I would have reccomended. Keep that boy busy. Or- my dogs know a "find a bed" command- when they are milling around and being obnxious I tell them to find a bed and they all run to their mats/beds and wait for a cookie or something else yummy. Even Vito has caught onto this. The trick is to teach them to stay there until you have released them. I use this aswell when people come to the door and they are all barking and clamouring for attention.

First off, I have to say, that after trying for almost 30 years, my dear husband is not as easy to work with as any of my dogs. Sometimes he just doesn't get it.
I do what Amanda has suggested, I taught mine 'place'. They are technically in the family room, in front of the fireplace, on their big pillows. We have a big open kitchen, and they can see me but are not under foot.
If either of them were barking after I told them to stop, I would give them a 'time out' which means being banished to the laundry/corgi room where their kennels, etc are behind a closed babygate.
There is nothing worse in either of their eyes than to be sent out of a room and ignored. I mean I might be feeding the other sibling a Philly Cheese Steak sandwish as I always say.
Thanks for the suggestions. Millie knows the commands "go to your bed" and the more casual (meaning nearest rug) "go lie down". I'm thinking Link will too, but he's so young yet, and we're working on it. I have a plan for a "time out" spot, will have to set it up tomorrow. Will see how it goes....

I personally like the idea of using the spray water bottle, on the husband. I may start using that trick, it didn't work with the dogs, maybe it will work on him.
