View Full Version : the very best, long lasting treat dispensing toy?

I want a VERY long lasting one, that does not have to be refrigerated or frozen (no Kongs). The more it can hold, and the longer it takes to get it out, the better.

The Buster Cube isn't bad then... it's the only dispensing one I have tried... has two levels so you can adjust how difficult it is to get the food out. Sorry though, I can't speak for how it works in comparison to others of that type.

The Buster Cube is a good one - it takes quite awhile to get all the treats out. The only downfall is the noise (if it bothers you), and the potential to scratch the floors. Another good one is the Amaze-A-Ball.

I second the amaz-a-ball ( the orange one right?) soft plastic that is quiet and takes a while to dispense all the treats within. I also have used the "waggle" but busy buddy where you can stick kibble or treats inside the two ends and it does take a while for the dog to work the treat out.. I could keep Dillon on that toy for 2 hours easily until every last piece of kibble was out ! Here is what it looks like:

and others on the forum have said they liked the busy buddy twist and treat... which i will be getting next time i get to a store that has one... here is what it looks like:

Dillon has more patience than his cousin. She gave up on the waggle because it was not "paying off" as well as she thought it should.

Yes, the Amaze-A-Ball is the soft orange one with all the dimples. Jackie loves that thing. She also likes that hollow ball (kind of looks like a see-through soccer ball? name escapes me for some reason). What I do is stuff a really big treat in there (something that I can barely fit through one of the holes) . . . and she works on trying to get it out. It's fun to watch.

My two adore the Tricky Treats Ball Dog Toy by Omega Paw - sounds like it's the same as Jess mentioned. The length of time it lasts depends on the size of the treat that goes in. Rupert is absolutely obsessive about it - he won't top until it makes no noise -then he nkows it's empty. He currently has a red spot on his nose from rolling his around so much! he would go for hours if it didn't drive me crazy after a while!!

You're right Deb, I was mis-naming that the Amaze-A-Ball (she has both, got them confused).

She has the little blue Amaze-A-Ball (see link):

mToy,

I second the Orange ball that Deb posted. Cody has this and loves it. He will push it around until every morsel is out. And the good thing is that it is bigger so it doesn't get pushed under furniture so easily.

The orange ball that Deb mentioned lasted all of 15 minutes with Dudley. (Not trying to be mean in anyway+WUBCLUB+ ) He was too lazy to move the ball, so he just ate a hole through it instead to get the treats out, so if your dogs are destructive, this might not be the best bet. I'm very interested to watch this thread as I would like something similar that is a bit tougher.

I would have thought the black Kongs would be pretty tough?

So Dudley wanted an extra hole for treats to dispense:BIGGRIN"

David, Black Kongs are tough, but mtoy had said "no kongs" so we were trying to come up with some other stuff.

I have this one, I don't think Dudley could chew through this

Thanks Linda!! That looks like a pretty tough toy; I'll definitely have to give that one a shot. It's a tough call though--Dudley is a master of destruction ;)

Wow Jeni - Dudley's a tough guy! Rupert is a shark and destroys everything and he would take ballet lessons if it meant getting a treat, but he's never destroyed the treat ball. They get torn after a year or so as he picks them up in his mouth when he gets mad at them and then moves them to another location for optimum roll-ability!!

triplecrown has a new toy...everlasting treat ball. I have had good success with it.

http://www.triplecrowndogs.com/shop/product.htm?loc=208

The neat thing about it is that it has two "stages" of treat. There is an inside pocket for kibble or kitty food- my dogs go crazy for kitty food. And then there is an outside part- Wicca will sit and ilck and chew for an hour or so until it is gone. Sam has figured out how to get the treat out pretty quickly and it last Vito quite a while. I have had the orange treat ball before and I had the same thing with Sam- he chewed another hole! and- I had given one to my parents Rottweiler- and his went all moldy. He loved it though- but he is very slobbery and that combined with cookie crumbs that never come out created a yucky mess.....
Kongs are by far the best...

Thanks for posting about that everlasting treat ball, amanda, I have seen it advertised and thought "neat" but worried that the outside treat looks way too easy to just gnaw off...so it is nice to hear about first hand experience with it.

The thing i like about kongs is that they can be thoroughly cleaned... just throw them on the top shelf of the dishwasher and ta da! clean AND disinfected too! the buster cube, omega ball etc all are impossible to clean anything other than the outside. Dillon loves the taste of cat food too ( he got to try it once or twice as a pup when he was sneakly... now the food is on a high table just for the cats... see ,he might like the food but the food doesnt like him (he gets the runs)... I use their small dog food pieces as treats in the buster cube and the omega treat ball and the waggle...

oh and yes, Jessica, the waggle is a tough one to get all the treats out of - but Dillon will work it, throwing it in the air, licking and chewing for HOURS to get every last piece out... he is determined when it comes to food!

We have the smaller model of the second one. I used it every day when Link was younger, but he got so good at getting the food out that I no longer bother now. I do think it could be chewed through, too. The thing I like about it is that it's not round, so it's not rolling all over the place.

The other one looks cool - is it clear?

Kongs are by far the best...

I've been wondering about those too. Maybe I'll try one....

The reason I didn't want the Kong is that the longest lasting fillings that I have found need to be frozen. I'm looking for something we can keep right next to Link's crate to throw in in the A.M. to get him to settle for a (long) while. But I experimented with a dried chicken breast strip, I stuck it way in there, lodged it in really tight. He licked it for a very long time, then Millie stole it and licked a while too. It never came out. I can stick some soft treats in the bottom around it, too.

I guess Kongs rule!

Oh, and yesterday I found a fire hydrant rubber stuffable chew thing made by Sargeant. I can't seem to find a link to one. It was considerably cheaper than a Kong. Will try that too.

The Amaze a ball looks cool too...

Lots of great ideas!

I put the Tricky Treat Ball in the dishwasher and it cleans fine. You just have to pull out the "chute" part with your finger. And it takes awhile (couple of days) to dry out. I run it through every couple of weeks to clean the inside. And while it is drying, I just use the other treat dispensing toys (kongs, etc.).

Em- I guess Jackie's too much of a princess for that!

mtoy - some peanut butter smeared on the inside of the kong will keep them busy for awhile also!

That lasts maybe 10 mintues with Link, and Millie must have some kind of special tongue - she can lick it clean in about 2 minutes, tops! Maybe I need stickier peanut butter?

Yesterday they drove me nuts - I filled and refilled twice in 15 minutes while I was cleaning a mountain of strawberries. Finally I just gave up.

Well, you could keep a little cooler filled with ice by your bedside and keep the frozen kong in there until morning:LAUGH: just trying to help you out. The thing is to put it in his crate before he starts his whining morning routine so he doesn't think he is being rewarding for his behavior

Cheese in the kong lasts a long time with Rosie. She has one of those "special" tongues, too, but a lump of cheese pushed in keeps her going for ages.

Umm...only thing is, I'm not sure if New Zealand cheese is the same as US cheese...ours is fairly stiff and hard.
