So, I got about 2 blocks from home this evening with the dogs on their walk, and Rupert went down into a good roll on the snow and came up limping. +SAD+

I thought at first it was his shoulder, as he ducks it down and rolls from it, but he was holding up his foot. So, I thought it was road salt and cleaned it off a couple of times, but nope. "NO:":

He was really limping and it took us forever to walk home and get up the 3 flights of stairs. This is not good timing as my back is pretty much as bad as it's ever been, if not worse. I cannot lift him up or carry him at all.

It seems to me it's his foot. He doesn't want to put it down, so we are off at 8:00 to the vet's to get a check-up and/or an x-ray.

Wish us luck, I really have no idea how I can take care of him if it is something major - but, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I'll update everyone when we come back from the vet's.

Any spare good vibes would be greatly appreciated. +WUBCLUB+

Thanks all - I really appreciate it.

His foot looks swollen - so I'm thinking broken toe again. We'll see what Dr. John says. He's one of our favourite vets - he was at the Toronto Humane Society for many years and he's been one of ours for the last 15. I'm sure Rupert will also get a lecture.

Oh my goodness! I am sending strong vibes for a very minor problem and a quick healing! Could he have been stung or bitten by something?? I'm guessing not if there is snow on the ground, but with a swollen foot...maybe??

Please let us know as soon as you get home! And add some lecturing from all of us as well...Rupert, you just MUST behave and not stress Mom's back! "NO:":

Here's hoping it's nothing major. Have you ever thought about a harness like I used for timmy during his recovery? It can help take the weight off him and doesn't require you to lift him.

If you look in the photo, there are two loops to hook the leash into. The rear one would help take pressure off the back end and the front loop, the front. I've attached the pic of the vest I'm talking about. Most of the dogs recovering from some sort of orthopedic surgery have them so owners don't have to lift the dogs.

Thanks for all the good vibes everyone - they worked. Thanks too Sylvia and Bobbie - that harness is brilliant - what a good thing to have for emergencies. I was thinking I could use his car harness or his lifejacket need be.

So, the vet thinks he may have just jammed up his leg and pinched a nerve. He did a thorough check of every toe and toe nail, his pads and everything up to his shoulder and didn't feel that he required an x-ray - thank goodness. The vet did some manipulations of his elbow, wrist and shoulder and he actually isn't limping as badly now. He is to have 4 days of rest - no walks, just out to peep and poop, and he is on an anti-inflammatory for the four days. Dr. John thinks he should be fine in 3 or 4 days. Thank goodness!!!

So, I am only out $100 and hopefully, he'll be just fine by Christmas.

Thank you all again for your vibes. :NOTWORTHY:

Deb and Rupe!

Great news about Rupe. Hopefully, all will go well and you'll all be back up and running in no time.

Ruffwear makes a harness capable of complete weight bearing and allowing dogs to be repeled down mountain sides. It's a bit pricey, but has a larger undercarriage, so to speak. I've attached the link.

The Webmaster is the one that Timmy used.

I'm so relieved to hear the updated news! Whew!

The harness idea is terrific, and as you said, you could use the car one or life jacket in a pinch. When we switched Millie to just a regular harness it made a world of difference for us, it was so much easier to help her up and down and around, and we don't even have any back problems (knock on wood).

If you weren't on meds for your back I would say you deserve a good stiff drink after all this! Heal fast Rupert!!!!

Jespah
12-21-2010, 06:36 AM
Thanks everyone, he seems much better this AM - not limping, but we did a very short walk and we are not taking any chances for the next few days. It needs to heal. The Doc said that the anti-infammatory would make him feel better and therefore want to do more than he should. I will make sure that he doesn't do more than he should!

I'm off all meds for my back now Deb, they weren't helping and I was having a very hard time with my memory - like I needed extra memory problems being middle-aged! So, other than Advil, I'm toughing it out. It was too late last night for a stiff drink - so I gave myself a raincheck.

Well, any sympathy I had for Rupert quickly dissapated tonight.

I came home, he was doing very well, no limping, so we went on a short walk. I was getting concerned about the medication he is on as he had three massive poops on the walk. I decided I should call the vet when I got in.

Came up, got changed and went into the spare room to pick up Tucker's cat food bowl and found the first photo below.

That's a brand new 30 pound bag of dog food inside of a Rubbermaid container that had a 10 pound dumbell and an at least 10 pound toolkit on top of it. The container wasn't fully closed as the bag was too big. He pulled off the toolkit and the dumbbell - it's a wonder they didn't hurt him and then wrangled off the lid and chewed open the top of the bag.

The second shot is how it would have lookd before the break-in.

They were not impressed when I fed the cats tonight, but not them. This is the only time since they were spayed and neutered that they have not been fed their dinner.

Anyone want a used Corgi???? :REALLYMAD:

Umm Rupert? I'm a little surprised by your, well..let's say..your naughty behaviour. I know for a fact, that your Mum feeds all of you very well, so there was no need to break into your food. You could have shot your eye out! Er wait...that's a different kid on my list.

Now I generally grade "on the curve" for most corgis but I'm afraid that the curve may not be big enough for this one. I may have to use the 5-year averaging plan for you. These next few days are crucial for all you little corgi dogs, because, well you know the song...but I'll definitely be coming to town this Friday. Ho Ho Ho! I must have weird Corgi's. a month or so ago I bought a 15 pound bag and put what I could into storage containers. There was still some in the bag so I left it open and in the kitchen. ( I don't have any place to store it) so it was right there and neither one of my dogs even attempted to dump it on the floor and have a snack. I think they deserve an extra cookie or two.
