View Full Version : Shaking his head no..

So, now that I've calmed down, and it hasn't happened for a bit..

Last night, we were laying in bed, Gizmo's head in my lap. And I felt him moving, but didn't think about it as he's very much a dreamer, and will chase or bark at something in his sleep for 5 minutes. Feet going and everything.

Then.. I looked down, and his head was literally doing this... "NO:": maybe like he was cold or something, but he looked kind of scared, and then stopped, I got kind of scared but thought, maybe I was imagining it. Then it kept happening, and we were in Fredericksburg so then I got even more scared. These "episodes" lasted only about a minute. But was completely responsive, as in, looking at me, coming when called, sitting laying down. Everything.

I got a shaky video of it, but it looks like, idiopathic head tremors boxers get. And so we gave him some wet food and some karo syrup mixed in because our vet (in Richmond, called his cell phone) and he said that as long as he was conscious and responsive. And eating and drinking. His gums did look a bit pale, so we forced him a bit of ice in him and the vet said the wet food would help. He didn't act tired, or anything, not lethargic or anything.

We have an appt tomorrow morning at 9am ET time. We will update you all after that.

He hasn't done it since, and they want to do an xray of his stomach so no food, so I hope it doesn't flare back up... and they don't think it was a seizure. I'm hoping this is just a, happened and we won't ever know about it...

Gizmo says thanks for the vibes, but if you could tell this woman to feed him, he'd be a lot better. (no dinner for the xray)

Oh goodness, that would have been very scary. You have certainly been through a lot with young Gizmo - he is very lucky that you have been trying so hard to help with all of these issues.

We are sending good vibes out to help make sure you find out what it is -or that it never happens again!

The vet doesn't think it's much, but they're doing a CBC, and a tick blood test.

So we think it could be either meningitis or lyme or something else that a tick can carry, since the HW/flea med he's on is exactly what it's for, not tick.

But he would call a neurologist. He saw the video I took, and said it doesn't look like low blood sugar but more like meningitis. So we'll see what the CBC says.

Thanks for your vibes.

And he did it again this morning. It seems to happen with low blood sugar but they don't think it is. But they ran it in his blood, and he said we'll see what it comes back as.

Silly question - but did they look in his ears? I've had two cats in my life that developed head-shakes and walked crooked and in the end it was ear mites. Just some Q-tips with mineral oil to clean them up.

I hope it is nothing serious - poor Gizmo. Hugs to you and Cody - must be hard on you not knowing what's going on.

Oh dear, how frightening. I sure hope the tests come back with something very minor and treatable. Lots of vibes from here. The girls send their sympathy to Gizmo on the no food thing. They think that's horid!

Exactly my second thought, as I had surgery in May on my ear. First thought, was a seizure, and then was like no, he's completely conscious. It isn't. Then I thought of the ear. Then I thought his blood sugar, I didn't want to go near his face, but thought if it was blood sugar, the worse that happens if I give him some Karo is he gets a little pumped up, and the vet agreed.

Honestly, I googled Idiopathic head tremors, you can too, and it sounds and looks like it, then you throw corgi in the mix, and you get...

And I was like, well.. she's completely aware of her surrounding and responding to the people, and that looks JUST like gizmos...

Wow, this is new for me. I have never heard of it. I certainly would be freaked out if it happened to either of mine.

Being conscious and aware, makes it a little easier to handle. Have you Googled his allergy medicine with partial focal seizures and/or Idiopathic head tremors? I wonder if there is any connection?

Man, that is very odd. I hope that you can find out what this is and stop it.

Good idea, I'll call the allergy doctor tomorrow as well. But just that it just started, but I guess it does build up.

I'm hoping, that I never know what caused it, and never need to know, because it'll never happen again.

Edit: I looked up on his vial of allergy stuff, and of course, it just says immunotherapy for Gizmo the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, male, vial 3.

Catching up.. Poor Gizmo. It's been a rough go of it. Hope the shaking is nothing serious and does not reoccur.
Wondering if the allergy shots are somehow messing with his blood sugar levels or are otherwise connected to the head shaking.

Vibes heading out>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I hope it will never happen again too. +SAD+

I'd just generically look for allergy immunization and the shaking on the web - see if there have been other connections.

Just getting in on this! Poor Divo! We hope that whatever it is is very minor and goes away quickly!!!

Good idea taking the video Elizabeth!! I don't think I would have had the brains to do that!

We send the most powerful vibes possible to our special pal!

The video is really weird... it does look neurological. Nothing like either Merlin's or Jack's seizures though I have never seen how Jack's start as they always occur when he is sleeping. Merlin's started with a partial seizure but it looked more like choking or chewing on his tongue. And neither of them is reachable during a seizure.

Hopefully it is benign. Seizure activity can be due to low blood sugar so it isi worth a try to have a syringe and some molasses around when it starts up give a squeeze into his mouth.

OMG, it's like my thigh! I get a weird thing in my left thigh sometimes, a type of seizure. It quivers all on its own. I was told mine was harmless.

It will be interesting to hear what the experts say.

Well my dad has seizures from multiple years of drugs and drinking (started when he was twelve, and he's 52 and just stopped about 2 years ago) but they're absent seizures (petite mal) my mom had grand mal but only like 3 or 4 since I was born, and 2 of them when I was REALLY little.

I'll see if I can link our actual video on here, I have it on facebook, but my sister and our breeder are the only 2 that can see it. She's given me a lot of good ideas. Pinched nerve was the one that stuck out the most, as both times he was kind of sleeping with his head sideways...

It is hard for me to tell from the second video but if you say it looks like the first video I'd still think neurological. Not something I'd worry about a lot unless it starts happening a lot. Gizmo is just the right age to start idiopathic seizures, though, hopefully this is all you will see. Maybe it is like a tic?

Yeah, I realized after it started my iPhone doesn't zoom.. So I was trying to get out of the bed, but tomorrow morning I'll be calling the allergist. Keep y'all posted, I've switched his feedings for now to 3x a day, and he stopped whining. So I'm wondering if it is sugar, and he starts whining when it starts to drop?

Got Gizmo's test results, and guess what... EVERYTHING IS NORMAL!! Who woulda thunk it?

ME.

Called the allergist, and she said no this isn't a side effect. She agree with the blood sugar thing too. So three meals it is. The regular vet says if it continues, we'll do some steroids and talk to the neurologist..

Jespah
01-19-2011, 03:54 PM
Well normal is good, but frustrating. Keep to his three meals a day and hopefully he'll never have another incident. Continued vibes that he's past whatever it was!

(Personally, I think he read up about low-blood sugar on the Internet when you were out and did this to get extra food. He's a Corgi after all.)

I'm sure that's what happened. As a matter of fact, the other day I came home to find my desk chair warm, my keyboard furred and my mac had this page open:

Oh yes, he did do this. And he jumped up in my arms off cody's lap. Then he jumped back to cody's lap. And busted him in the lip.

Wow, so glad feeding 3x a day is a fix.

It was interesting to see one comment on the youtube asking if the person uses lysol on their floors. Most people don't realize how toxic that can be to an animal. But I would think a dog has other symptoms.

For something in the ear, Chester's ear always is lower or tilted back so we can tell which one is giving him trouble.

Mtoy, I do hope you never have any numbness on any part of your leg as that was my cousin's symptom of parkinsons.

Now I'm covering my eyes, plugging my ears and singing so I can't see or hear this. I don't want to know, as my Dad had Parkinsons, and died too young because of it.

Unfortunately her type was heredity from her mom. Don't despair, there is also a lot of new discoveries in food supplements for it too - Life Extension.com do a search and be amazed. It is nice to say advancements have been made in one disease!

We have the kong wobbler, it's a weighted egg, that you put their food in, much like the dogzilla egg we have, but the hole is smaller and it screws shut, so it kind of delays how much food he gets at once, but he only got 2 meals today and didn't complain one bit!
