View Full Version : Stinky breath + yelps = cracked tooth
Link's breath has been increasingly stinky lately. Since he's not so interested in eating his own poop we were wondering why. Then, every so often when chewing a toy he would give a small yelp and jump up. I kept looking in his mouth every few days to try and find something but everything always looked fine.
Tonight I found it, a molar cracked clear through.+SAD+
Shucks, I have his teeth in such great shape and he'll still need dental work. Can't win for losing.:ARG:

aww poor Link. That is awful! Dillon has a slab fracture of that fourth premolar but thankfully the nerve is not exposed, it just sheered off a chunk ... what is with these dogs and them breaking teeth... so many corgi friend have had this happen.. I have stopped giving Dillon his coveted himalayan cheese chews, antlers, bones, and anything hard to chew on since this happened... he also chiped a tiny bit of his other fourth pre molar on the other side.
Poor link and his boo boo tooth... that has to hurt. I am sure that once they remove it, he will be much happier... and ready to chew on his toys again! Hugs to your guy... oh and yes, i know the frustration of caring so well for the teeth and having one crack... i found dillon's tooth when i went to brush his teeth and about fell over with shock!
Hugs to link
No kidding on the hard chews - no longer allowed in this house. Millie had 2 cracked molars, now Link with his, it's too much. Since I found the no odor bully sticks and cow ears there isn't even a need for them anyway.
I found an interesting page showing a corgi getting the Carnassial tooth extracted:
not for the squeamish (http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/dogdiseasesconditions/ss/SlabFxDental.htm)
I don't know if it's been posted here before. It's the same tooth Link cracked, but his isn't a slab fracture, his looks just like when they crack it for removal.

Oh dear, poor Link!+SAD+ Poor bank account!
We're back from the vet. Both the wet and the tech thought it was a line of tarter at first look. And I agree, it does look like that, and that's why I missed it for the last two weeks. I insisted I saw something, explained how he normally doesn't have such a bad odor and the yelps. They took him in back where they found it cracked straight through, and it's actually loose. They were shocked because they never saw one like that, they're normally slab fractures. So when I told them how Millie had both upper molars cracked in the same way they said maybe it's a corgi thing. Who knows.
Link was very good for the exam, no hysterics or anal squirting this time! We have antibiotics and an appointment Tuesday AM for the extraction.
I'm also going to have them xray his shoulder(s) to see if there's a visible reason for that once-in-a-while limp he gets.
I decided I really like that vet office. It's so close we could walk there if we wanted, they are so very nice and gentle, and the estimate for the extraction is reasonable.

Good luck for Link. (((())))
Dylan broke a tooth last year and had to have it removed. He was almost 12 then and came through it fine. I'm sure that Link will too. Good idea getting the x ray done at the same time.

Lots of good vibes for Tuesday...........
It's pretty obvious that he has some infection in that tooth, as his odorific breath has improved so much since he started taking the antibiotics. Wow, it was killer the other day, and now I don't even notice it. It will be so nice to get that rotten tooth out of his mouth. I really hate to put my dogs "under and out", but I admit I'm looking forward to Tuesday.
Thanks for all the wellness wishes!

Best wishes!
The vet just called from surgery. He has another tooth that is "sheared off" on the back side, with the pulp exposed. So another one bites the dust! It's a 2nd incisor, upper left. She asked if he plays tennis ball, it's a common injury with that.

How is Link doing this morning? We are sending him many feel better fast vibes.
He's doing great, seems like normal. I gave him his pain med so he should be comfortable.
He was so weird yesterday, just a cry baby and also hyper sensitive to noise. I think it was the meds. Later in the evening I gave him a soft meal of turkey, pumpkin, zucchini and rice and he settled right down.
This morning when I looked in his mouth (it all looks good) the first thing I noticed was that the ODOR was GONE!!! No more death breath!:SPINNY:

Glad that Link is feeling better. I think the anesthesia can make them act wierd for a day or two... and the older the pet, the longer it seems to take them to get over the effects of the anesthesia.. One of my cats took two days to get back to normal after he had his teeth cleaned. So i know it happens.
link sounds like he had a nice dinner last night... glad he is recouperating well!

So Deb and Emilie - do you have things for your dogs to chew? With Rupert having this slab fracture, I guess we'll have to change our ways here. We only have Nyla bones and I thought they had enough give to them we'd be fine.
I like them to have something non-edible to chew on as they both spend time chewing at various times of the day and it can be very good for their teeth. What are others using if not Nyla bones, antlers and bones??
To tell you the truth, I can't see that Link is missing the hard chews. I give him a cow ear or bully stick (odorless:WINK:) about twice a week. He can chew on his stuffies if he wants, but doesn't. I was going to pick up one of the softer Nylabones to try but I keep forgetting when I'm out and about. All has been good, even without the hard chews.
Jespah
03-05-2011, 06:43 PM
Are the softer Nyla bones the ones that are kind of clear looking? Jemma really likes to spend time before her meals having a nice chew - they both seem to do it on a regular basis - either because they want something to do, or because it feels good.
Yes, they look kinda "gummy". I was thinking now that he's not so young and a little gentler on his chews they might work.
Jespah

Okay - I'll see about getting a couple of them - thanks Deb.

Cooper doesn't like the gummier nylabones. He is a chewer, it calms him. After he destroyed a tooth on the regular ones, he isn't much interested in them. It was a mighty crack when he broke his tooth. An occasional, short gnaw, now, is about it when he unearths a nylabone.
Bully sticks have helped. I get the smaller diameter ones. Picked up a beef trachea at the pet expo. It's about 2 inches in diameter and we have been cutting off a 2-3 inch length to give him. He wets the stick and the trachea while gnawing to soften them. So far, no issues with being too hard on his teeth. Wouldn't do either unsupervised, though. Both give him the "chewing satisfaction" that he craves. He also gets a white dental chew that gets gummy as he chews it which also helps with his chew needs. He loves them!

I am wondering if mine will like the "gummier" ones. I want something that doesn't have a high value to it that they can be left out. Not something edible. I do give them chewies like the CET ones with the enzymes for their teeth, but like you said, I do it as a supervised activity.

Cooper isn't exactly a good one to judge by as you know lol. Having an "only" I forget about the competition for the "goodie" piece.
Cooper's only competition is me; if what he has is something he shouldn't! Grrr.

Dillon and Gus ( becuase i cannot give different things to the boys without potential issues - they have to have the same thing or they could get into a scuffle) are not getting any hard chews at this point. I have two himalyan cheese chews that are brand new in the package and i have no idea what to do with them at this point.
I have used bully sticks here and there for them... but that is the hardest thing they are getting now.. they do not like the gummy nylabones, they do chew their stuffies and tennis balls now and again but other than that , they do not get any hard chews.
He also gets a white dental chew that gets gummy as he chews it which also helps with his chew needs. He loves them!
We give Link the white dental chews too. I forgot about them, probably because we're out of them at the moment.

What are others using if not Nyla bones, antlers and bones?? Pip has one of the blue dental nylabones. It's flexible with ridges. Both of his pre molars have been extracted due to slab fractures (durable nylabone & an antler) and I think if he still had one of his molars he would be able to break chunks off of the dental nylabone. More than once he's choked on rawhide chews (and it gives him messy butt), so the only things he can really have is a Kong and edible chews like dehydrated sweet potatos and bully sticks.
Like Emilie's guys, Pip does like to chew on his fire hose toy. It's pretty stiff. That or the dental nylabone are usually what he drags out to chew on now.
