Back when we picked up Gromit at the end of '09 I told his breeder, Jean York, that we'd definitely want a little brother or sister for him when one came available. Well, it appears that the time has almost come!

Two+ weeks ago Gromit’s mom delivered two healthy pups (yes, a small litter), one male and one female. Barring unforeseen circumstances one or the other of Gromit’s half-siblings will come from California to live with us here in Arizona in July. We’re excited, Gromit is excited, our mini-wiener dog, Holly, just smacked her forehead and said “Ach du Lieber Himmel!”

For those that are into such things, the sire is Ch Pinemeade Shine On and the dam is Coalbyn's Patriot's Dream (AKA "Mum" to Gromit).

Some pictures and more to come:

No litter name or puppy names selected yet. If we got the boy I wanted to name him Newton but my wife shot that down immediately. If we get the girl we may call her Wendolene which, in the Wallace & Gromit series, is Wallace's unspoken love interest. We won't know until about 7 weeks if Jean will keep the boy or the girl for show. We'll happily take either one.

More news as it become available.

A big congratulations from us! +JIGGY+

I love having a red and white and a tri-colour, people often ask if Rupert is a Corgi too, just because he is different from what people think of as the traditional colours.

I'm sure that whether it's the boy or girl, you will enjoy having a set! :BIGGRIN" Holly might be happier to have Gromit apply his attention elsewhere - you never know.

Oh Doug, what exciting news! The look on Gromit's Mum's face is priceless -- so happy to have two little darlings.

This will be fun to follow the two pups as they get a little older and then, lo and behold, to find out who ends up with big bro Gromit and step-sis Holly (me thinks I understood her German exclamation....!)

Thanks for the good news and I know we all eagerly await more!

Best wishes to all of you as you w - a- i -t !

Thanks for the well wishes, gang. No other news or pictures at the moment but I am hopeful. Jean did write and ask for suggestions for the pups official names and I sent her several.

Holly the mini-wiener dog also asked me to add some unusual name suggestions of her own:

Coalbyn’s
Wiener Dog Nemesis
Don’t Touch My Squeaky Toy
Leave the Tail Alone
Floppy Ears are not Chew Toys
Just Because You're Taller Than Me Doesn’t Mean I Can’t Beat You Up

I suspect Holly is trying to send a message now that she’s trained Gromit...

Yes, Peggy, as you would expect Jean was hoping for a more normal sized litter as were we. Jean has a waiting list of people who want pups and I was fortunate enough to be at the top. Sadly, nature controls those things but the pups that are there are thriving nicely. I'm hoping for more pictures soon.

I'm afraid The jury is still out on a name. My wife seems to have seized veto power in the matter. If we get a girl pup we are considering naming her Wendolene (http://www.wallaceandgromit.com/films/acloseshave/characters.html?character=0) or "Wendy" who is Wallace's love interest in the "Wallace & Gromit" movie "A Close Shave."

In any case, it's probably one of those things where you can't really know the name until you look the little pup in the muzzle. A friend told me she'd picked out a name for her Corgi pup and the puppy simply refused to acknowledge it. She changed the name and the pup started listening. Maybe they understand more than they let on?

Mother Nature controls a lot of things, boys when we are hoping for girls, one testicle instead of two on a particular male we were hopeful on, fluffies, etc....

I hear she was hoping for a second litter that didn't happen too. Sometimes nature doesn't play fair!!

Yup, the dad is a tri, Ch Pinemeade Shine On. Handsome fellow but had his fun and then ran out on the pretty girl. Typical man.

In this case Doug said dad is a tri. However, he wouldn't have to be. Red is dominant, tri recessive. Mom has to carry the tri gene or none of the puppies would have been tris.

You can get tris out of two reds if both carry the tri gene.

Thanks for the insight, Peggy. Gromit's great-grand dad Tommy (http://www.sandyshirecorgis.com/tommy.html) was a tri so that must be at least in part where the gene snuck in there and then popped out with Gromit's brother, Night. If I remember correctly Gromit is also distantly related to Rupert through Tommy.

Right now it looks like we'll be getting the boy but nothing is for sure because there is still a bit more testing scheduled. Jean is very forthright about the process of testing and selecting her next show pup so I've tried not to be too much of a pest. I have a slight preference for the boy but but would be just as happy with the girl. And since both pups are clear for DM that raises other potential possibilities.

I think all I'd have to do is nod my head the wrong way or wink and my wife would be loading up the car to go visit them, with or without me! But it's 450 miles over there so we're being practical. One trip to pick up our pup in July will be expensive enough!

The pups got temperament tested this week. Jean has decided to keep the female so the little boy, Coalbyn's Kodak Moment, AKA "Koda," will be coming to live with us in Arizona sometime around the first of July when he is 10 weeks old. He may be getting a new call name, the great debate over that still rages on here.

Here's the e-mail I received today, as you will note, Koda and Posy (girl) have begun using the computer already, another sign of how smart Corgis are even as puppies.

Dear Doug and Debbie & Gromit & Holly, Koda and Posy here. We got temperment tested today, whatever that is. Ed took pictures for you:

http://inlinethumb62.webshots.com/45181/2902754880105705829S500x500Q85.jpg
The first thing they do is dangle us up in the air. Boring!

http://inlinethumb05.webshots.com/45956/2766202940105705829S500x500Q85.jpg
Then I’m supposed to chase him around the patio. (I was actually herding him)

http://inlinethumb23.webshots.com/45590/2841250360105705829S500x500Q85.jpg
After the thrill of the chase, he tosses a wad of paper out. I check it out. It wasn't worth eating.

http://inlinethumb56.webshots.com/47543/2638444250105705829S500x500Q85.jpg
I must have upset him for some reason. He holds me upside down. I thought was going to get my tummy scratched but I didn't. Hoomans are very peculiar.

http://inlinethumb25.webshots.com/47832/2394396120105705829S500x500Q85.jpg

Oh my goodness all around, puppy love for sure! What an adorable little guy, and how brave he is through all the various (silly, even, according to him) tests. Imagine a tummy exposure but no rubs. Humph! Well I'm sure DougDad and DebbieMom will set that exercise straight when he comes to live in the Gromit and Holly household.

Can't wait to learn what you, Debbie (with help from Gromit and Holly, we hope) will name the little guy. Wow, finally, it's gonna' happen -- a little brother for Gromit and and a fuzzy pest for Holly. Sure will be interesting after he arrives. Not only will we be beggin' for pix, but we'll need explanations so we can she how he is adapting and flourishing. Neat things to look forward to for sure. 450 miles away? I thought she was near you seeing all the photos of dirt and not a stitch of grass for the pups.

I thought the drive to get Chester was long but tolerable as for him it was half that distance. It was torture for me because he got to sit with my son and I was so eager to hold him.

Puppies are so irresistible. This months will be a L o n g wait.

Corgifan

The final hurdle is an eye exam later this month. Probably just a formality but Jean is very thorough.

Yes, the pups are a day's drive from us. Yuck! I HATE the 450 mile drive to California from Arizona. When my parents were there I did it 2 - 3 times per year for the last 30 years...and they were 650 miles from me. But for a new Corgi puppy I'll do it again. Also, Debbie's mother lives in the high desert about 90 miles from Jean and Ed so there is an additional family angle involved or at least to help justify the high travel expenses these days.

Under other circumstances I'd have searched for a new pup here in AZ but there are not tons of breeders and more importantly, I've had three corgis from Jean now and we have become friends over the years. I'd almost feel disloyal getting a pup somewhere else. It is very good to work with someone so careful about her breeding and showing and who has such vast knowledge of Corgis.

As for little fellow's name, the wrangling continues but Jean is starting leash training and wants to know what call name to use. She's been using Koda, based on his official name Coalbyn's Kodak Moment. Debbie and I are at loggerheads about puppy names, neither of us are keen on Koda but we hate all the names each of us chooses. I want to name him Newton and Deb really hates that one. I may have to give that up only through negotiation for some treat to be named later. :BIGGRIN"

We picked Gromit's name in about 30 seconds, we may need marriage counseling by the time Koda gets his new name! Right now we're narrowing it down to Ruckus or Bentley. We really need to decide.

Doug

If it would help, I have a suggestion :BIGGRIN":

How about you ask Jean to film your pup, just randomly for a period of time or a web cam would really be the ideal.
This way you and Deb and Gromit can have a chance to sit back and soak him up, so he can help to name himself! Now be sure to tell Jean it is of the utmost importance, your marriage may just depend on it, haha!:TWITCHY:

PLUS, you would get to share said footage +WHIST+...just sayin

Well, we finally gave up the name battle and just decided to stick with calling him Koda. Sigh. I thought "Newton" was a great name for a Corgi and Debbie liked "Valentino," so you can see how far apart we were in style. We're a very odd couple, an engineer and an artist.

I tried to get Ed to send us some videos but he's not real geeky and just getting pictures to us pretty much maxed out his tech skills so we didn't press. He's sent us a few photos each week and we're grateful for that, it's the first time I've had "growing up" pictures of a pup and it's been great fun.

I agree with that too. Koda is an easy name. Easy to say, not long. Goes with the reg.l name. For me I like names that are part of or related to the reg. name in some way. (And sometimes that means only in my mind...)

Jean actually did me the small honor of asking me to suggest some official names for the pair. She likes theme names that can work into call names and be easy to remember. After decades of corgi breeding I couldn't guess how many puppies she's named.

Anyway, being a photo geek (and thank you for the kind words!) I suggested some "photo theme" names along with a bunch of others including "art theme" names since Debbie is an artist. Jean wound up using the photo names but chose to but modified them slightly from my suggestions. I may just call the little guy Kodak as I've shot thousands of rolls of Kodak film in the years before digital cameras.

Holly, our 10lb mini-Dachshund also sent along her own puppy name suggestions to Jean and which I'll share here with you:

Coalbyn’s
Don’t Touch My Squeaky Toy
Leave the Tail Alone
Floppy Ears Are Not Chew Toys
Just Because You're Taller Than Me Doesn’t Mean I Can’t Beat You Up

I suspect Holly was trying to send a message to her new jr. pack mate.

I had such a laugh! Holly is definately trying to tell you something LOL! so funny. I personally love the name koda and kodak... both really cool names... Naming the dog can definately be a challenge when you have two people with such vastly different ideas of what a name should be. We had that issue when chosing a name for Dillon.. We ended up agreeing early on, but some of the other choices were all over the place..
Valentino? Newton? bentley? Ruckus? yes, all over the place in style. I do like bentley a lot and newton.. Ruckus.. well i think you might be asking for trouble there.. I think Koda/Kodak is great!

The last photo of this sweet puppy getting it's toe pinched.. and the look on that face is just so precious.... if i could reach through my computer screen and hug it , i would ! so sweet....

The report came that Koda and Posy have substantial ears (hey, they're corgis!) but maybe the big radar dishes were not popping up quite like they should so they got taped for a day or so.

Here is a picture of Posy with ear tape in:

http://inlinethumb01.webshots.com/45248/2292333110105705829S500x500Q85.jpg

And here she is with the tape removed. (Along with some fur, I'm afraid):

And so far their ears have stayed up! Hooray! Clearly they both are happy and chubby although Koda seems to have gotten more of the big, happy face, that his 1/2 brother Gromit has.

I'll be heading over to California the week after next if all goes well to grab him and bring him to his new home.

So , i too wonder, is Koda going to be a black headed tri? I admit when i first was looking at corgis , i wanted red and white only and was not a tri fan and least favorite was the black headed tri... however, something in me has changed completely and now i really LOVE the black headed tris and think that my next corgi will be a BHT! I now love ALL the colors of the pembroke ( and cardigan) rainbow and if i could, i would have one of each color!

Jean said she feels that Posy will wind up a red headed tri and Koda will be a black headed tri but qualified her view with the sure knowledge that colors can change a great deal over two years. But Koda does seem to have the black headed tri look to him and that's fine with me. It's that happy corgi smile that I love the most.

When I first decided to get a corgi I wanted a traditional red & white and wound up with red headed tri's. Gromit is is basically red but more sort of a tan white red something. Very handsome fellow but his colors are not so distinct. So this time I was hoping for another red headed tri and apparently will get a black headed tri. I love them all though and am far happier about being able to get my fourth corgi from the same breeder.

I am astonished at how quickly Posy and Koda have changed, it would have been so much fun to see them change in person but I'm just glad that Ed's been willing to shoot some pictures and send them along. Thank goodness for digital photography and the Internet! Koda's little face really speaks to me so I'm hoping he's as special as he looks. Gromit decided to go frapping last night about midnight and I was trying to imagine that x 2.

In the pig ear pulling contest the boy, Koda, seems to have been the winner although experience has taught me that often the boys win because the girls let them. +LOL!+

I should also be honest and say that most of the clever photo captions come from Jean's husband Ed, along with his photos. Sometimes I tweak a word to suit, but Ed's a got a very whimsical sense of humor when it comes to corgis and he's usually right on in reading their little minds.

He sent me several more pictures of the pups today but they all had kids in them so I didn't feel free to post them. But here's one of Koda today with no kid faces.
