View Full Version : How Did Your Dog Get It's Name?

Okay, I'll start this one, but I really want to hear how you decided what to name your dog. I know there have got to be some really good stories out there!

We have an older black lab named Sampson, so when I started looking for my corgi, I knew it would be a female. Sampson is fixed so I didn't worry about mixed puppies. I also knew I would name her Delilah.

We also have two chihuahuas that are siblings from different litters. The older dog is named Princess. At the time I got her brother, Peanut, it did not occur to me to get a male vs female. Nor did I think about the name. He just looked like a Peanut. Now I refer to them as the "Princess and the Pea".

We also had 2 cats, Draco and Groucho. Their names sound similar just by accident! Draco was named because his Mom (Cheryl's sister) is really into dragons and his tummy pattern looked like dragon scales. Groucho was named by Cheryl because his mustache reminded her of Groucho Marx. Groucho has found a new forever home (Draco didn't like him) with a single woman whos kid are all grown and on their own.

Bugsy's registered name (see first photo) is "Sir Bugs Alot". He got his name because he bugs all the other dogs. As I was filling out his paperwork to send in, I noticed that his sire's name is "Skeeter Bug", so his name kinda carries on his lines theme!

Milo was named by the breeder. I thought it fit him, so I kept it! It's short, easy to remember and kind of comical....like him!
What is funny about it is that while I was anxiously anticipating on getting my corgi puppy I was trying to come up with a list of names. I thought i'd give him a welsh name, etc. So after all that agonizing, I ended up going with the breeder's temporary name for him!! (I noticed she was a great name picker, all her dogs had fitting names)!
My kitty Mieko has a Japanese name that means "already prosperous". I picked it because it rhymes with squeako, and I call him Mieko squeako...because he doesn't have a proper meow, he squeaks.

I think most people here know the story behind Mac's name...

Colin has a degree in computer engineering and is a software developer for a large mutual fund firm. He and I are also big self-professed computer nerds (although he knows lots more than I do!), and we both prefer using Macs to PCs. I'd had some experience with both types of computers before meeting Colin, but keeping up with the latest and greatest Apple products is a hobby of his in particular and it didn't take log for me to catch the bug.

It seemed pretty natural that when we got a dog we would have to name a female puppy Apple and a male puppy Mac!

On a side note - Colin's childhood yellow lab, Hogan, was adopted when Col about about ten years old....he named him after Hulk Hogan

Zip is named after the dog from the movie "Last of the Dogmen." After I picked Zia out, Doug and I kept trying to come up with a Z name for a girl and didn't agree on one. I was reading a book and there was a girl named Zia in it. Zeke was just another Z name that I thought about for a male.

1. TRAX THE SAMSENG
My 13 year old red/white boy.
He was extremely hyperactive when he came. We called him "Trax" as a form for " always making tracks"....
"Samseng" (pronounced sarm- seng) means "Gangster" in Hokkien, a Chinese dialect.
He was gangsterish right from the start.
Lived up to his name.
Surprisingly he has been very gentle with puppies/hurt dogs and is a great mentor/ 'elder brother' to younger dogs.
He is milder now but he somehow reminds me of the Godfather Don Coleone....

2. MARKY THE CLOWN
My 6 year old mutt ('Singapore Special' is the polite word for mutt here)
Actually it is Makarios (Greek= Blessed).
He was blessed to have
a. someone witness the hit and run accident when the femur bone of his leg was crushed...
b. someone rescued him the very next day (responding to the call of the witness)
c. a dog-rescue society raised funds for his very expensive operation
d. his fosterer adopted him.
He is clownish....a big baby....

3. BARNABAS JU-ERN
My 3 year old tri-colored corgi boy.
We got him several months after Twerp (Tabitha the Twerp- corgi girl) died of lymphoma. We were still grieving over Twerp.
Barnabas= 'son of encouragement' came as such.
"Ju-ern" is Mandarin (Chinese) for "The Lord's Grace".
Sometimes we call him "Samseng kia" - Samseng= Gangster in Hokkien Chinese. Kia= child/ kid. So he is the gangster kid.

When I got Rupert, I already had Riley the Corgi and Triston, Ella, Kenya, Tucker and Sprint the cats. I wanted a name that didn't rhyme with anyone elses so he'd know who I was hollering at! I didn't have a lot of leeway! I also wanted a name that was British. I was a big Rupert bear fan when I was younger and as Corgis have little bear bottoms, Rupert seemed the perfect name. So, his registered name, which I got to choose, is Prince Rupert of the Kingsway.

I had a hard time thinking of a name for Jemma. She was already Felicity - not a name that I am a fan of. I again wanted a British name different from the rest of my herd. I love the name Emma, but I know a few Emma's and didn't want to copy them. Jemma in old English means "little dove" and after Riley's passing it seemed like the right name to give her. So she's Jem the Pem!

Although it's not my dogs name, my screen name Jespah, has special meaning to me. I have been an animal lover and especially the animals of Africa. Growing up I loved the Born Free movies, Doctari and the stories of families that lived in Africa with wildlife as part of their families. I finally had my dream of going on safari come true in 1995 and saw everything I ever imagined - except a leopard. Anyways, I adopted a young injured kitten who was a beautiful light beige colour like a lion. I named him Jespah. That was the first born male cub of Elsa the lioness of the Born Free stories. Jespah didn't live past 5, but he had a wonderful life and we loved him. So, he lives on in my screen name.

Well, Checkers was named after the way his "band" marking meets up on his neck. It looked like a little checker board from day one, as you can see below. Besides, the name just seemed to fit him somehow and he responded to it immediately (much better than Jango Jr that the breeder was calling him because he looked the most like his daddy Jango). Here's the picture of his checker board marking when he was a puppy and it was most prominent (still obvious today if he isn't wearing a collar, but not quiet as much so).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/AlexTheCat/dogs/Checkers/Checkers2.jpg

As for Gator. His previous home had been calling him Chopper and we thought of keeping it, or making it Chomper but those both were so close to Checkers in sound we wanted something completely different. Well, we are huge University of Florida (Gator) fans... and so we took the name from Chomper (the name of the Gator's mascot) all the way to Gator. It fits (he is a little mouthy!) and he also started to respond to his new name within a day... so Gator it is!

I wanted to name our Corgi Lola, had my heart set on it, and my husband was just as set against it, and I actually listened to him(after a number of arguments on the subject)and we spent so much time debating the name. You would have thought that we were naming a child, but I guess we were. We were out playing slots one night, acting like three year olds, having a great time, and I was winning some money, and my husband made the comment, "Look at you, Miss Gambler", and the lightbulb went off over both of our heads at the same time and we squealed out "MISS GAMBLER" at the same time, and we never spent another second discussing the name, we thought that it was perfect, and she's lived up to it. Miss Gambler found Mojo in the middle of the Mojave Desert, in Death Valley, so we gave her the name Mojave Girl, but we quickly decided to shorten it and call her Mojo. She does possess incredible luck.

Trevor - well, I definitely wanted a name that was Welsh, but I knew that any name containing a bunch or W's and Y's all mashed together would be a source of endless pronounciation butchering by vet techs, etc. Plus "Trevor" just seems to fit his personality - always smiling, just a happy-go-lucky kind of guy! :CUTE:

Similarly with the cats, Bamboo got her name because it made you think of somewhere exotic in the East, and Kona, well she has an overall darker coat for a Siamese (sometimes is refered to as The Dark Bean.) Oh, and did I mention I am a coffee-aholic? Yes, I think I have!

For Pepper, I used the little grocery store checkout isle book of boy and girl names. I jotted down all the names I liked and we wanted two syllable. We picked out Pepper and went home for the two week wait and choose the name. I would call out a name and hubby would yea or nae. Then the list of yea we would discuss whether there was a nickname as we aren't fond of nicknames that much. Then we realized with Pepper having such a little blaze and SO much black, Pepper fit her. We used a pink collar for years to try to show people she was a girl. She retired with a purple collar.

For our new puppy, I went through the welsh and foreign names for dogs on the internet large list and made a long list of names I liked, then did the calling of the name at the dinner table and we narrowed the list of names. For the girl name we wanted something totally different from Pepper and decided April as she would be born in that month. For the boy we like a male for their large chests and thus Chester won the name. Trevor was my second choice DCole! By the way my mom hates the name Chester for a puppy - can't please everyone.

Millie is a welsh name. We went through a baby book until we found a welsh name that seemed to fit. Her breeder had named her "Moonie", as she has a moon-shaped while spot on the back of her ruff. Most of the time I just call her "Baby".

We went through all sorts of names for Link. Then my husband mentioned that he looked like the little guy from the Legend of Zelda - Link! Especially those huge elfen ears! We call him all sort of variations on his name:

Linky
Mr Linky
Stinky
Stinky-Linky
Mr Linkin
President Linkin (my husband's favorite)

As mytwo were both 'adoptees' their names came with them

Sooty is because of his colour and his first name is Llwynog- means Foxy in Welsh

Cindy Birdsong- named after one of the Supremes- she has a sister called Tina Turner.

Merrie - I love the name Chester! It's different!

And Debi - I love it - of course you have a cat called Kona!!! We have a Kona around the corner from us - but she's a Newfoundland!

This is a great thread, and I think that it needs to be a sticky of some sort. It's a great way for a new member to get to know the other dogs and owners, but if it becomes buried in all of the other posts, they may never find it. Just a thought.

Trevor - well, I definitely wanted a name that was Welsh, but I knew that any name containing a bunch or W's and Y's all mashed together would be a source of endless pronounciation butchering by vet techs, etc.

Well, I wanted a Welsh name and went with Rhys, and he is usually called "RYZ" or "RICE", but that's okay...I just correct them. I'm used to correcting people with the pronunciation of my own name. Which is pronounced like "ANNA" with a "T".

His registered name is CB's Disraeli Ears (I have a master's degree in British history - hence Disraeli; Disraeli Gears is a classic album by Cream and I just tweaked it to accentuate Rhys's natural attributes :CUTE: ).

Andy was named CB's Adrianna of Jaax and called Andrea by her breeder. The litter was an "A" litter - Andrea, Adam (Rhys's original name), Austin, and Aaron.

My lab is named Tess after Tess of the D'urbervilles.

My corgi's name is Midge, and I guess that's kind of an obvious name for a corgi as it turns out. When I saw her at the animal shelter, they were calling her Tiger Lily, which didn't fit her at all. I had never had a dog before, let alone a corgi, and the first name that came to mind and really seemed "right" was Midge. I thought I was being pretty clever with that, but I've since met a lot of people with corgi's named Midge. Some people have called her "Madge," short for "Your Madgesty," because she has a bit of an attitude.

I also considered going with the traditional spelling "Trefor" but nah, again, just asking for confusion...

Dillon was named in memory of my sweet boy Clinton the cat who passed 6 months before i got Dillon. Dillon's name means "faithful" his registered name is "XIII Maples Late Knight Lover" Clinton used to wake me up every night around 2am to snuggle with me and get patted, which I always obliged- so we used to joke that he was my late night lover! Dillon's mom is ch XIII Maples Star Castle... so i changed night to Knight to make it fit the theme a bit better....

Gus had been named by his previous owner. I felt his name fit him and I didnt want to confuse him.

Emma was named by the breeder when we got her. We thought and thought but Emma just suited her best :CUTE: Just a sweet, soft, gentle English name for our sweet little Puppy Girl

So for Chloe we wanted a name that invoked the same feel as Emma's but different enough they wouldn't be confused. Leah wanted to add Belle... she is our Leah Belle and she felt "her" Baby Girl should be named after her too :SPINNY: (when she was 3 she told us to call her Leah Belle - as in Tinkerbelle and we loved it!)

Leah named both our cat Raisin (when she was 2 1/2) and her Dad's cat Tubby (when she was 8).

For male names (next time we add to the family) I have always liked friendly traditional dog names like Toby and Buddy. But since we are moving to Tenn after Hubby retires we have already decided on Smokey!

It's really interesting reading about how everyone picks names.

Gizmo got his name from the Gremlins movie. Those big ears are what made us think of that. He can be cute and look cuddley, but he also has his ornery side. His registered name is "Juels Life Of The Party". Juels is the kennel name, and his whole litter has the word "party" in it. I guess a litter of 11 is a party.

Can't say we have any specific reason why we came up with Cody; the name his breeder gave him was "Forrest" and I do like that name, but I could not see myself calling him that. Since I have been on these corgi forums, I have encountered so many more cute names. I like the name Winnie for a female.

My cat Owen was named after the actor, Owen Wilson -
Billy was named by my son when he was 4 after "Billy" the Power Ranger
Ernie my other cats name was just picked out of a hat.

If I have cats in the future, I will choose from either Laverne, Shirley, Lenny & Squiggy.

I'm not entirely sure how Dudley got his name. The first picture we saw of him, he had a bit of a "dumbdy, dumb" expression on his face, and I just thought he looked like a Dudley.

For Maya, we wanted a "pretty" name because she seemed so dainty with that big black freckle, or beauty mark as I like to call it, on her nose and those big dark eyes (Boy were we wrong; she is anything but dainty!). We toyed with Gracie, Sophie, and Annie for quite some time. Then, we were looking at the Petsmart website to buy a name tag before we got her, and the sample tag had the name "Maya" on it. Hubby and I both loved it immediately, and it's been her name ever since.

Abby was so named because of the 'Dear Abby' column as I knew I would be discussing with and seeking advice from her on most matters, also all my previous cats/dogs have had unisex names, this time I wanted a really girlie name.

Ada was named after a video game character... Ada Wong, from one of the Resident Evil games.

I broke my cardinal rule of never re-using names with Ada (I believe it's bad luck) - I had a little Doberman puppy that I was training for my breeder, and we had named HER Ada first! But, her name was changed later on to Ivy, so I suppose re-using the name Ada is only 50% bad luck! ;)

ooh, fun thread...

Kate (my non-corgi, a shepherd) was very girly as a pup, and was very much a little princess so I wanted a very girly name. I went through a baby name book and picked the girliest one I could fine...there are not too many Kate's around!

Wiccas name was tough- as I initially was planning on getting a male, shepherd! So I had this huge long list of boy, big dog names. When I was learning about Wicca's family tree I noticed there were lots of witchy names- Wicca's grandmas name is Druid. So I searched the internet for something Witchy- and Wicca it was...It suits her to a T! She is very naughty and very witchy indeed. Her reg. name is Bluetrix A Little Wicca Majic

Sam came named- I had toyed with the idea of changing it but waited too long. Some of the names I liked for him were "Simon and Zack, neither of them suited him and by then I had been calling him Sam for two weeks. I wasn't sure if I liked it at first- I usually prefer more unique names- but it has grown on me- I call him Sam the man, Sam-A-Rama, and Sam I Am...

Lots of you know Vito's name story. He came with the name Jack and I was all set to keep his name and then realised that I have not one, but two friends with kids named Jack...so the name search was one. Vito is a tough little bugger who at a young age had lots of personality problems- very bossy, and quite dominant. He is also of course short and stocky...So the name Vito originally came from the shortened "Danny DeVito" and then my friend googled the name and found out it was also Don Corleone's real name.
And of course there is also the "Veto" as in No- Which he tells me alot!

Here is a picture of the three corgis together!

(so I've been told) She got her name from her origianl foster home- they have a three year old Boy and he named her- after his favorite thing! I thought it was cute and kinda quirky...so when I took her to foster I kept the name...and it has been 6 months now so I guess I'm keeping her!

I will try and get some pictures but she doesn't much like the camera...

It took us just about a week to name Chip. I wanted Rowdy Piper and my husband said no that wasn't a good name and I had a whole list we went through and nothing felt quite right until I hit upon Chip. My husband wanted Chipper but I wanted Chip so Chip it is and then whenever you have a Chip, you have to have a Dale and that name was picked well before our lil Dale was more then a figment of my imagination. He even knew his name before he came home. Smart puppy.

Zack was named for Miami Dolphins Defensive Lineman, Zach Thomas and a dog character in a book I'm writing. When Zoey came along, I wanted something that sounded cute with Zack and everyone I asked said that Zoey was the one. In addition, Miami Heat Center Zo Mourning is both a great athlete and humanitarian, so Zoey's full name is Morning Time Alonza. When I rescued Zena, I knew I wanted a Z name but I had run out. As I was holding her in the first few hours she was in my home, a rerun of Xena, the Warrior Princess came on. The ha ha moment happened and my new little girl became Zena, the Cavalier Princess. Once I had Zack, Zoey and Zena, Ziggy was the obvious choice for Zena's puppy's name. In additon, as a musician and a lover of all music, the chance to honor and remember Ziggy Marley couldn't be missed.

I have loved corgis, and wanted one, since I was around 10 years old. And for some reason, whenever I pictured my future corgi, it was a male named Jack (also wearing a red bandana, don't ask me why). So that was how it was going to be - I was going to have a male R&W Pem named Jack. Well, you know what they say about the best paid plans . . . when we ended up with our fluffy RHT female, my husband said let's just add the IE. So Jack became Jackie (which often gets shortened to Jack anyway).

Her registered name is Team Ryan's Rookie of the Year. When it turned out that we could name her whatever we wanted for her AKC name, we thought and thought and thought . . . trying to figure out the perfect name. When we were engaged, we obviously talked a lot about what we felt our marriage should be. We are a team - US against THEM (no matter who THEM is, there is no division of US). It got us through all those engagement hassles, and kept us from turning on each other when one of our families was being unreasonable or driving us nuts. ANYWAY, that became our battle cry "GO TEAM RYAN!". It's also incorporated into our email address. So Team Ryan's Rookie of the Year was just perfect.:CUTE:

PS - yes, I realize that we are a couple of dorks . . . but we are happy dorks.

Toby is my first corgi and I wanted to give him a name that was differant sounding than my cat FatMax and our schipperke Maggie, so I got a name book and made a list. Then I tried out the names and my husband vetoed most of them until I came to Toby. So Toby it was. A few months later, I aquired another Toby. Imagine the confusion in the household when I talk about Toby. The next question from anyone is usually "Which one?"

So now I clarify and say Corgi Toby or Gypsy Toby. In case anyone was wondering, my other Toby is a Gypsy Cob and his registered name which took me forever to pick out is Tobin Sparrow.

What a wonderful thread, and what interesting stories!

Montrose, I wanted a female, Gary wanted a male corgi & to call him Montgomery. Monty for short. That sounded like a name for a bull dog to me.

We compromised, we got a female & called her Montrose, Monty for short. Except of course people think that she is a male. The revelation came from a passer by just a few months ago, for short, I should have called her Rose. Mont Rose:TWITCHY:
She is (Queen Montrose of Sardis, where we lived) Texanda's Montrose.

Our corgi boy that came to live with us when Monty was 18 months old was Thomas. We only had him a short time before he left us for the Bridge.

Dylan, we named him to make the connection with Thomas, as in Dylan Thomas the Welsh poet. His full name is Greentrees' Top Royal Escort. Kennel name, Top & Royal from his familie's names, and Escort because he is Queen Montose's Escort.:BIGGRIN"

Our next corgi, not for a long time though, will be a male again, his name will be Danny in honour of Monty's grandfather. He was the first corgi that we ever met in the fur as they say, we fell in love with the breed & the rest is history.

Ooo Ooo... if you can do a non-corgi, I'll doa non-corgi too!

ILSA - her name was going to be Cairo, it really was. Then again, she was supposed to be black 'n' rust too... ;) After seeign her sire, I decided I wanted a red instead... and when the breeder brought out little baby Ilsa... she just didn't look like a Cairo. She was far to chunky and big boned to be named such a refned name. I had told myself I wouldn't fall into the "new dobe owner trap" and name her something German or after a Greek god/goddess, but I ended up falling into the trap anyway. She just looked like a German, javelin throwing Frau that I just had to name her Ilsa. Later on I was told that "Ilsa" is the name of a famous pornstar - I swear I didn't name her "Ilsa" for that reason! Yeek!

RONIN - his original name was Hugh. My breeder named him after Hugh Grant. She sold him to a show home at 7 months, where they slightly changed his name to Hubert. Now, maybe it's just me... but Dobermans should not have wimpy names like Hubert! I tried changing it to Hue, but it just wasn't working. I knew his breeder would be mad if I changed his name, but I changed it anyway! I wanted to name him Roman since I'd gotte him on July 4th, but at the time I was raising another doberman whose owner had named her Rumor - and I figured that "Rumor" and "Roman" were too similar to be practical... so I altered the name slightly to "Ronin". And it fits him very well, I must say!

One last note - Corgi #2 already has a name, although it'll probably be changed once he/she comes home in a few years - Sidekick.

" Later on I was told that "Ilsa" is the name of a famous pornstar - I swear I didn't name her "Ilsa" for that reason! Yeek!

A famous porn star where? In Germany?

I love everybody's stories! Awesome thread!

Well my ex (thank god!) step-dad named Mollie. Didn't have much say in that.

My sister named Izzy. She said that if she had to live with two puppies that she was going to name one  so she named her after the character on Grey's Anatomy (her favorite show). I had wanted to name Izzy something with LOTR and seriously thought about Maura (the Westron translation of Frodo), Rosie (Samwise Gamgee's wife), or Nenya (ring of light). Looking back on it now with her personality she would have made a good Shelob (huge, mean spider)

I got to name Frodo (gee, finally!). I've always been a huge Lord of the Rings fan so I knew even before getting him that it would have something to do with LOTR, and well, with the big feet and the short legs it just fit.

FLuffypants - I'm not sure, I didn't ask! ;)

But apparently if you Googe Images her name... well... yeah.

I have to tell you... I LOVE the name Frodo for a Corgi. We threw it around for a while....but then figured if we were going to go nerdy with the name.... Mac was an even better fit for a boy ;)

I love the name Mac, especially of how you guys thought of it!

Have you seen the movie Wild Hogs? William H. Macy is a "GEEK: biker and he gets an Apple tattoo, every time I see it it reminds me of your little Mac :CUTE:

:LAUGH: Colin and I purposefully boycotted that movie when it came out, because it looked pretty absurd... but that's actually pretty funny.
