We have a couple nylabones from Pepper that have been slightly chewed. Meaning, on the dark one, the dark color has been roughed up, but the knob of the bone is definitely not changed shape. Could the puppy have this, or is it best to have a Puppy get a smooth nylabone? Could the puppy have the slightly used nylabone when older?

and yes I am thrifty.

The blue nubby nylabone that Pepper barely touched, but loved as a senior, are these the ones to not give a puppy because the nubbies can be chewed off? I don't have any packaging and thus really wondered.

The nylabone frisbee is in fine shape as Pepper never chewed the bone in the frisbee, just used it as a carrying handle.

I have no problem setting items aside until older, or tossing the slightly used items if need be. I have a guest room closet and put the items in a bag on a hanger on the pole. Yes, Pepper trained me well on putting things up high, and behind a door!

I read somewhere that nylabone rings are available and I loved using one in my dryer when I washed something with down! But I lost mine in my move 6 years ago. Pepper hated those, but you never know with the next dog.

Yes, you can give the puppy the slightly used nylabones. I would not do it if I bought them at a yard sale but you know where these have been, so they should be just fine!

It should be fine too. And they make nubby ones for puppy's. The nubby's would be too small to hurt the dog. The worry would be if he/she chews off a knuckle. Then that would need to be taken away. Whenever it gets small enough to be swallowed and choke them or sit in the stomach and not disolve. A nubby would go right through. (I'm thinking tiny bumps that massage the gums right?)

Neither of my dogs like Nylabones, so I can't help you with your decisions about them.

I'm just posting to say Hi, and to say that I really enjoying reading about all your puppy preparations!:)

FYI about Nubby Nylabones:

My brother's pug LOVED his Dental Dinosaur (covered in Nubbies) from day one. We got one for Mac, too. It's pretty cute :)

Cody did not like Nylabones either and I spent more than enough money thinking I would find one he liked - I gave them to someone else.

We tried a number of versions on Miss Gambler, she hated them, and after trying a couple with Mojo, who also hated them, we gave up.

My adult dogs have not liked them but some of my puppies have. Then again, puppies will chew nearly anything.

But why are some not like others? My husband and I never noticed Miss Gambler chewing or teething, we never even found a single tooth, but Mojo chews on everything, including metal and glass!!! And we have found a number of her teeth. They have been total opposites in the teething department. I think Mojo actually had a lot of pain during teething, and she let us know it. Miss Gambler tends to go with the flow, she's mellow, things don't bother her like they do Mojo.

I got nylabones for Dillon as a puppy and he ignored them..so i gave them away to a few friends of mine, then as he got older, i got them again thinking maybe NOW he would like them, nope, and to this day he wont touch them at all!

Off Topic - True story....
One of my best friends has a baby (1-1/2) and her MIL bought her some teething toys from a garage sale. My friend was fit to be tied and trashed them. Her MIL was upset and couldn't understand why my friend trashed them.

Well, in day care, toddlers often share the same toys and put the same stuff in their mouths, however, I probably would not have bought teething toys for my kids from a garage sale; though I could see my MIL doing that.

Pepper loved the hard to find chocolate nylabones. She had us trained. She would bring them to use to "hold" because her paws couldn't hold the bone upright like she wanted to chew them! She NEVER touched the nubby bones until her last few years. Go figure. I've got the semi soft that looks brand new. Course we also play "lets give the bone to the neighbor dog" and Pepper would quick go to the bone and chew some. The bone with the knots were just too big for her - I gave to a golden retriever.

MVONS: OFF TOPIC WARNING: My husband and I had our photo taken with a lion cub at the MGM lion habitat, and the cub's name is Pepper. Over the past year 1/2 we have enjoyed watching her go from cub to lioness, she's beautiful.

Trevor is the first dog I've ever had that likes nylabones. Good thing, because that boy has some monster jaws and loves to chew.
He gets the wolf-sized bones (he prefers either the regular or chicken flavors  )
and can wear down a knuckle in a week or two if he's persistent.

FYI, Merrie, I believe I've seen the chocolate nylabones at Petco.

Riley and Rupert would never touch the Nylabones. When I got Jemma, the beaver dog, and she went after my furniture I decided to try with her and she liked them. Of course, if Jem was chewing them, then Rupert had to!

A couple of weeks ago I bought a package of three. One was bacon flavoured - when I offered them the choice of the 3, Rupert clamped down on the bacon one, scrambled under his chair and proceded to growl and eat the entire thing in about 5 minutes. He went nuts! I tried to take it away and I thought he would bite me. I figured I'd just see it again in his poop for the next few days, but nope, didn't affect him one bit!

Both my dogs love them. Millie had always had the hardest ones until we found she had cracked a tooth, then we started buying the softer ones (yes we go through many more now). We don't know what really caused the cracked tooth, maybe it was the Nylabone but it also could have been one of those hard marrow bones she had years ago. I'd hate to think of life with these dogs without nylabones - they love them that much.

my neighbor across the street said when her Golden Retriever was a puppy, he bit off a big chunk of a Nyla bone and swallowed it whole - he needed surgery to a tune of $1800.

Since soft toys do not enter my house..... Nylabones are a big favorite. I only by the non edible ones and they actually manage to distroy them.

I have not bought the big fist. We have the regular beige shaped bones in all states of distroyed, the green tube with a three nubby ball on each end is another favorite. I bought the glow in the dark Nylabone fish and had to throw that away in 3 days. There is also a white Nylabone Pirate thingy. My two even managed to gnaw that pretty well.

Fortunately I have woods around the house that provide tons of sticks for them to distroy - for free! Woohoo.

But I have to say, their all time favorite toy remains that rubber stick Emilie gave us because Dillon and Gus wouldn't play with it. My two are nuts for it. We play fetch for about 1/2 hour every morning.

Nope, not edible, but that doesn't stop the shark! His record for eating an 8 inch knotted rawhide is 7 minutes. He's scary.

Susan, Glad that your two love " the stick" Dillon hated it, was scared of it the first time i tried to play with it with him ( silly pup) and Gus wont play fetch unless Dillon is playing... so that toy was just not being played with... so I am just glad that your two like it! The stick for your two is like the squeaker football is to DIllon, or the EGGBABY ALLIGATOR is to Gus and Dillon- Deb, that toy was a winner, I bought more eggs for the toy, they still really love it!

Millie can do that too, once she ate hers quick as a wink and then stole Link's and ate that one also. That night she had the squirts.

Rupe, the mastiff type corgi! My brother had a mastiff that would consume the nylabone, where Pepper had one that lasted 10 years. Regarding the dog that ate the end off and needed surgery, I heard a similar story and the owner only buys the nylarings now. They are circles made out of the hard nylabone. Pepper hated it as she needed an "end" to grab. Guess if I have a Rupe type I'll find the nylaring.

I keep meaning to tell you how much my two are still playing with and enjoying the goodies that you gave them. Rupe, of course punctured the squeaky football - but we were tossing it aound the livingroom this morning. They love to roll it with their nose - specially Jem!

can your two pick the foot ball up in their mouths? Gus has trouble picking it up and then carrying it to me, but Dillon doesnt at all! and he looks so funny carrying that big old football in his mouth. I am glad that your two like the toys.. Dillon will roll the ball to me with his nose if i keep insisting that he get it closer to me, he often runs up drops the ball ( 6 feet away) and then runs off - then i ask him to bring it closer so he will run back and push the ball with his nose towards me and run off again anticipating the throw... too funny these two are!

Millie and Rupe are unbelievable! Trev hereby relinquishes his title of THE Monster Jaws. :NOTWORTHY:

Merrie - I don't think Trevor would like the rings either; he loves to "hold" one end in his front paws while he gnaws away at it.

Ada only gets used Nylabones... she won't touch them unless they've got Doberman drool on them!

Ilsa, the older dobe/Queen Bee of the House is an elitist - she won't touch the nylabones, she'll only chew on real bones. Ronin, my younger dobe, will chew practically anything. Ada sees Ronin as her main role model (heaven help us...) so she'll chew anything Ronin chews.

However, none of them will touch the tan colored Nylabones.. just the white ones, and the Dinosaurs, and the edible ones of course!

Oh yeah, they both can pick it up no problem. I got to listen to 5 solid minutes of squeak when Rupe found out it squeaked!! He loves squeaking!!! It's not as fun now that he has de-squeaked it - well, not as much fun for them that is!

There is nothing sadder than a dog who has just desqueaked a toy. Miss Gambler always pouts, she loves squeakers(hated them when she was a puppy, scared to death of them actually) and she's put a few out of their misery. The latest was on the morning after she got it, even she was ticked about that, something brand new and it just breaks!!!

There is nothing sadder than a dog who has just desqueaked a toy.I got tired of finding the squeaker on the floor. Then I found the bone shaped plastic that the squeaker was built into the mold so no separate part to swallow. Luckily I have one left from Pepper to treat the puppy to.

Dillon played ball just like Pepper, with the pool table nose to send the ball closer because she rarely dropped the ball in front of us. Except when we were sitting in a chair and ignoring her, she would nudge the ball between our thigh and the chair side . . . when she was not a senior.

My comment must have been jinxed me, Miss Gambler and Mojo have matching squeaking newspapers(they didn't need two, they always want what the other has, but husband wanted two) but last night they were playing with one of them, each squeaking it, and I suddenly started to hear just air. I looked over and Miss Gambler was giving me this, "Oops, I did it again" look and Mojo was furiously trying to find the squeak in it. It was funny and sad at the same time.
