I didn't post about this week, I was hoping for a good out come first, and we got that.
Last week, two different mornings Dylan did not want his breakfast. One morning after breakfast he did his usual business in the potty area of the yard and I then took him for his morning stroll. Half way down the street he started to strain, walked a bit more and strained again. The next time, he tried to poop, but red (blood) jelly came out of his rectum.
Back home we rushed, I called for Gary to come out back with the paper towels, some water etc.
I got Dylan cleaned up and sent the stool sample with Gary for him to drop off on him way to work.
This is exactly what had happened to Dylan when he contacted the Salmonella 3 years ago. And which he had and took meds for for almost an entire year.
Naturally we have been very worried about our boy. We were very relieved to hear the Vet say that the stool sample showed 'nothing of interest'!
We stopped in this morning after our weekend away to settle our account. There was no charge. We have great Vets!
Off to the nursery we went. It is a very dog friendly place. Montrose was in her stroller with her Dad, Dylan walking along with me. We stopped at one point to look at some hydrangeas, and out pops a long black and orange leg & paw and smacks Dylan in the eye! Poor little dog let out one heck of a scream he didn't even see it coming! He had a big area of blood area on the white of his eye. Back we drove to the Vet's.
They fit us in within 10 minutes. He put some green florescent dye into his eye, cleaned it, gave me some ointment and told me to use a flashlight to check it at least once a day. If I felt that anything was wrong, that it didn't look right to me to just bring him right back in. The Vet said that he would much rather see him for nothing, than have anything wrong and us not bring him back. We have wonderful Vets!
The red spot is smaller tonight. Aparrently a blood vessel was broken when the cat punched him. Of course the worry is infection.
I hope it isn't hurting him too much, he seems happy enough tonight. The next few days I will be watching him like a hawk to make sure he doesn't get into any bushes ect to sniff and get anything into his eye.

Poor Dylan! I bet you and Gary were scared to death. I'm so glad that everything is ok. Poor little guy! Give him and Miss M some hugs from us. I enjoyed "seeing" all of you last night! Will keep my fingers crossed that he doesn't get an infection.

Just wondering, but do you have cats? If you don't, then he was probably scared to death. Good to hear that he's on the mend, from both issues.

Barbara,
At first I was not sure what you were talking about " black and orange leg and paw"(it's late); was the cat in the bushes hiding? - poor Dylan, that must have really scared him and you. Sending good wishes your way that nothing else will come of it and all will be okay.
I knew of someone whose human baby picked up salmonella at a day care - it was a long recovery for the baby. I am glad to hear that Dylan does not have that again

Wow, when things happen they really happen huh.
I'm glad Dylan is ok from the first bout and is recovering from the second bout of unfortunate events.
Take care! And i'm truly glad u got great vets over there!!!

Poor Dylan - he was just standing by you and the cat probably thought he was getting in "her space".

Not even a hiss from the cat? I don't think that cat should be in public! We always joked with Pepper because my husband can imitate the cat growl and hiss and Pepper always put her ears back and barked "don't you do that". Poor Dylan, no warning or anything is cruel and the cat is a bully.

Poor Dylan! What a week he's had! Glad to hear he's OK and that the eye is healing. Will keep paws crossed for a complete and speedy recovery!

oh Barbara! blood in the stool would have had me for a loop too! Poor Dylan. I am glad that it is not the return of the salmonella... thank God for that... did the vet tell you why he had blood in his stool like that? like what could have caused it? that is scarey, and then for poor Dylan to get popped in the eye by that cat! well that cat just wasnt following the rules of engagement... a growl or hiss should be given before a pop in the eye... I will pray for no infection, I know with my cats they have their nails well clipped, they are not sharp and could cause no real damage to either of my boys, but my neighbor's cat who roams has dagger nails becuase they never cut them... i worry , dillon got smacked in the nose by him once and he bled and i was worried for days about him getting an infection from those dirty cat nails... I am glad that Dylan seems to be improving but will continue sending good healing vibes your way... Hugs to your special boy ( oh and monty too of course) sounds like he had a pretty trying time there...

It sounds like your canine family has had more than their share here lately, Barbara. Poor Dylan...one thing and then another. Maybe you need to get him a helmet and some safety goggles for outside play. Mojo could verify the need of a helmet. Things just happen and seem to come out of the woodwork at times. My hopes for a speedy recovery for him and that all will be cleared up soon. A few extra Sundae's from Dairy Queen may help him mend.

It was good to see him looking chipper last night - and as you said you'll just have to watch him and hope for the best. Cats can pack quite a whallop - my cat Triston (the 3 legged evil cat) has smacked me on the knuckles a few times and it hurts!
Now, do you think he saw the cat, or just the paw snaking out of the bushes? Personally, I think he may now have a fear of potted hydrangeas!

Poor Baby! That mean old cat! Did you say anything to the nursery people about the cat? My parents used to have a cat at their nursery in NW FL and had to lock him up during the day (in Mom's office) because he didn't like people. He was allowed to run free during the night to keep the "critters" down. They might need to do that with this cat if it is theirs. Glad to hear he's OK and that the eye is healing. Will keep paws crossed for a complete and speedy recovery!

Jespah, that's so funny, and I didn't even think about that, he may have no fear of cats from this, but may be terrified of plants  . And Delilahsmom: I went into an antique store once, and found myself stalked by the owner's cat, who had the nerve to laugh about it when she noticed, the cat ended up lunging and scratching my leg, and I threw a fit.

Dylan's eye looks pretty good this morning, not swollen, and the read spot has lessened.
There was some junk from it, but the Vet said that there would be. He sat patiently while I cleaned him up, check his eye with a flashlight and then put in his ointment. He is such a good boy.
The cat, no, we didn't hear a hiss, but as we were looking at the hydrangeas, Dylan could well have spied it and maybe stared at it? Cats are the same as dogs in that regard I would imagine? A stare at a dog is a challange.
We have 4 of those same hrdrangeas planted with the cherry trees at the back of the yard. He's not afraid with those,:NAH: poor pupper. And we do have some very large and scary ferral cats come in from that field behind us.
It always seems to be something, guess if I had three dogs, it would be more.
Thank you all for your good thoughts for my boy, we apprerciate it very much.
Oh yes, and seeing the blood, I did freak!

Is it possible that the cat was declawed? That would certainly make the possibility of infection less I should think. I hope he's feeling great today, and recovering from the entire terrible trauma!
There has been additional ice cream, hasn't there?????

No, the cat wasn't declawed, but it did have all it's shots, I asked that right away.
And no, there was not more ice cream, but there was cheese.

Poor Sweet Dylan! That mean old cat! Glad the spot is getting smaller and he appears to have no ill effects. I will keep my paws crossed for a speedy and uneventful recovery. The blood would freak me out too . . . but so would the eye . . . and you do have wonderful vets!!

Barbara,
I am glad that Dylans eye is better and not worse. I have no idea why people would let a cat like that roam around their "dog friendly business" - I have visited a couple of nurseries with resident cats and they are very friendly, however, they were friendly to people; not sure how they would act around unfamiliar dogs. So, not sticking up for the cat that scratched Dylans eye, but he didn't know Dylan, right?; so when the cat saw and felt his presence a "bit too close", I guess he let him know that he did not appreciate it.+SAD+
