Normally when I call Dale he will start running to the house and tonight when I called him, he didn't come so I started looking for him and calling to no avail. I happened to look out back and my non jumping Dale was standing on his hind legs and jumped almost straight up in the air just to catch a firefly. I wish I had my camera. It was a pretty picture. He is such a sweet lil fella.

What a lovely summer image Bonnie - a photo would be nice, but I can picture it so clearly! Does he chase butterflies? Jemma frolics along chasing them with a big smile on her face! Ah the simple things in life!

It was a really sweet scene. So much innocence. I can picture Jemma chasing butterflys too. Dale hasn't chased those that I know of yet but he will chase birds sometimes. He is quite the character.

Do set the camera out as I've seen few photos of a firefly. Yes, the west coast is deprived of those critters and I never saw them in Michigan. Is there a type of weather they like - after a rain?

Sounds like Dale is ready for ballet! So cute.

How cool! We get lots of them in our back yard. We're in Michigan, I think it's just a nice summer night that brings them out (can't have a lot of wind).

I bet Dale was having a great time. I can just picture that.

There are some kind of weird "illuminating" types of fireflies (lightning bugs) about 40 miles of so from here headed toward Gatlinburg that hover close to the ground and don't look like the traditional lightning bugs you see each summer evening. I've had it explained by those who have been there and seen them but, I've never seen them myself. Dale would have a ball there in Townsend.

We don't have lightning bugs here, but we do at the lake, and they are really neat to watch.

We have lightening bugs here in upstate NY. I'm starting to see them at night. The dogs don't seem too interested in them.

When I lived in Cleveland they had tons of lightening bugs. They were bigger than what we have here and very easy to catch.

I tought my little neighbor to make a jar with holes in the top, we'd catch lightening bugs, put them in the jar, then he would watch them as he fell asleep. The next moring he would come and get me and we would let them free.

My grandfather taught me that one.

How cute!! Maya actually did the same thing when we took her home to Tim's parents' house. They live in the country and there were literally thousands of fireflies coming out at dusk. I had never seen so many and neither had Maya. She took off snapping left and right trying to catch them, and when she finally did she would just shake her head...they must not have tasted very good ;)

I'll bet the firefly didn't think so

We have lightening bugs all over out here, though the dogs don't seem that interested. Frodo says they're too easy, seeing as he is an avid fly hunter  He will follow them around the house until he gets them, and if they fly over the couch and your sitting on the couch, well then you just become another obstacle between him and the offending insect *sigh*

Thanks for posting this Bonnie, such great images one can imagine, and shows our babies carefree side. It truly doesn't take much to please them.

Just more evidence of my immaturity . . . I still chase lightning bugs AND butterflies!!! *sheepish*

I have the cutest mental image of little Dale right now.

With Dale it was more like a dance - very awe inspiring and graceful the best part - it was just a fleeting glimpse when all you can say is awe. Neat!

Thanks for the visual Bonnie! There is just something about Dale - you can just see the sweetness in him :CUTE:

David,
Hubby found a Humunguous Lighting Bug at his Plant! 1st he thought it was a pixie  then the 2nd time he thought it was a Chemical Plant Mutation :TWITCHY: but then he found out it was a bug from Costa Rico! the little girls down there catch them and wear them on their tops like a pin! It must have hitched a ride!

That must have been a loooong ride!! How big was it...an inch long?

BTW-While I'm thinking of it, those fireflies I mentioned earlier in the Smokey's are unusual in that they're thousands of them at a particular (June) time of the year there and they all "turn on their lights" in unison and then you don't see them for about ten seconds and the sequence begins again. They are an illuminating color and very strange to see. The had an article in the local paper about them last summer.

I had to chuckle when I began to scroll down and read the titles of some of these recent threads like this one..."Dale and the Fireflies". It hit me-hey, that sounds like a group from the late '50's!!
