View Full Version : Third time a charm?

I'm almost hesitant to post this but I've always been one to take risks and I thought you all would want to follow the adventure.

After two failed attempts last year to get a little Corgi brother or sister for Gromit, the third attempt is in progress.

If all goes well one of those little mini-bunny butts will be coming home with Gromit and me around the end of March.

Keep your fingers crossed that 2012 is a PUPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Oh, and part of the fun is that the pups are related to both Gromit and my first two Corgis, Watson & Tinsel.

Gosh, Posey reminds me of Cindy. BUT actually looking at the pedigree, clipper shares a gggranddad with Sooty. Super guy of Pemland. In fact I know the breeders of his two gggranddads... Pemland and Cordach.

Got to love those tricolours.

Yay, Doug and Gromit, a new corgi puppy will soon be added to your family.

What wonderful news!

Thanks for keeping us posted.

Very cool that we'll be practically related! I printed out and showed the pedigrees to Gromit and explained it all to him but he just said "Do I get a biscuit?"

I'm very excited about getting another tri-color. When I got Gromit I had my choice of he or his brother, who is a tri. I took Gromit because I was still heartbroken over losing Tinsel, who was a tri, and I didn't want to put anything on Gromit, didn't want to be trying to see Tinsel in him. But I'm past that now and having tri puppy will be great fun and make for even better pictures with Gromit.

Don't know if I'll get a boy or girl or which pup. I don't have a preference for a boy or girl and the breeder says she'll decide who gets which puppy. I'd love to have a choice but I assume there's a list and I might be last on it anyway as I've not gotten a pup from her before.

I'm pondering the name possibilities. I have some names left over from last year's misadventures but don't know if I want to use one of those, they sort of have some baggage attached to them now. If I get a girl pup I may name it Sparkle, sort of a homage to my late Tinsel doggie. It's hard to say though, with names, sometimes you just don't know until you see the pup and get a feeling from it.

I hear you , Doug.. Sometimes the name that you pick out doesn't fit the pup..

You know, when Matt and I were going to get a new puppy brother for Dillon we spent hours talking about names when the puppies were born, knowing we were having a boy.. and we finally came up with the perfect name and even a perfect full AKC register name. Then two weeks later we learned about the breeder having a young dog that needed to be rehomed ( she was sending me and another lady photos of the new puppies per my request and on the bottom she was telling the other lady that Gus was still looking for a home.) ..well all that planning for puppy names and we decided not to get a puppy and to bring Gus home instead! We never considered changing his name... he was a Gus!

Anyway, i can't wait to hear updates and send you huge corgi vibes for a new little brother or sister for Grommit

No idea yet which will be ours. The breeder says she can't make a determination about which will be the best show prospects until they are at least 7-8 weeks old and it's possible that more than one could go to a show home. She did tell me I'm first on the list for the pet home pups though, and it would be highly unusual for an entire litter to be show quality.

Of course she's familiar with Gromit:BIGGRIN" but it would be good to see how he reacts to the pups, since he's going to be on the receiving end of lots of bites and nibbles:TWITCHY:

Maria won't release the pups until they are 12 weeks old. Gromit's breeder is the same way. They feel that the extra month of socialization with their siblings is important to adapting to the new human home and getting house broken quickly. I know Jean even starts some simple training in those last weeks before the pup is released. I believe they also like that extra month to do a final - final choice for show prospects. I'd love to have the pup a 8 weeks but I respect the experience and thinking of both Maria and Jean.

I totally understand Doug. We let Sadie's one litter go at 8 weeks, and I really wish we could have had them for a couple of additional weeks. Hank's breeder wouldn't let his German shorthairs go till 12 weeks. I thought that might have been because most of them were going as hunting dogs rather than dedicated housepets like Hank, but I'm sure the extra socialization did help him - especially in a breed that tends to remain a puppy for 3 years! :SWOON:

As hard as it is on us to wait, I think it is better for the pups to have more time with the littermates, etc. And the breeder is the boss. We are just all very impatient! I actually like it when the breeders have a lot of rules, it says to me that they really care about their babies.

Just out of curiosity, is this pretty commonplace among breeders?

Usually breeders have an idea fairly soon which puppies are show prospects and which are not. Sometimes at birth, if it's a mismark, by a few weeks old if it's a fluffy. Sometimes a little later such as if a males testicles don't drop.

Most breeders know by 8 weeks of age which puppy they are keeping and which ones are show prospects.

However, some breeders use the term "show prospect" rather loosely. I'm sure that's not the case here since Jean directed Doug in this breeder's direction.

It seems sort of like an odd bait & switch that could easily be employed the moment the breeder has more buyers than puppies. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

No, most breeders do not employ a "bait and switch" when they have more buyers than puppies. Also, it's not a first come, first served thing. You have to match the puppy to the right home and vice versa.

Oh, Doug, I'm so sorry this litter didn't work out. You know, they say that all good things come to those who wait. So, I'm sure there's a reason. The breeders in my area charge one fee for their pups, all the same! Show, pet, performance, etc, same price, the contracts on the show quality are different though, mostly co-owned.
