As I was taking Colby potty, I realized that already he had a few quirks/habits.

He always kicks his back feet, kind of scraping the ground after he goes potty. (someone called this the "potty dance") He has to sniff the entire room upon entry before he'll grab a toy or settle down at all and he'll almost always take a big drink from his water dish after going potty.

Anyway, it made me think to ask...

What kind of cool, funky or weird habits do your dogs/cats/pets have? (this may end up being a good Foto Friday topic, pictures of your pet in action doing their funky habits!)

Rupe does the potty dance too.

My favourite routine that both mine do, Jem occassionally, but Rupert everytime, is when he goes to bed, he closes his eyes and then he makes funny mouthing movements - almost like he is nursing. It's like it's a soothing or winding down thing. He just looks like a big baby when he does it - very cute!!

Seems I remember that being called the "victory dance", also. Must be a thing with them all.

David, the 'dance' is ment to make big marks to leave behind, to tell the next dog that comes along that there was a big dog there last.

One of the quirks of both my two dogs that makes me laugh the most is this one. After every meal, they pass each other moving to the other's food bowl. And when it is empty, it is always empty, they each get this surprised look on thier faces. That they each do, twice a day, and have been doing for almost 10 years!

Always a chance that a crumb has been left behind by the other I guess.

Well, they say that Corgis are chow hounds! I remember reading from someone who said theirs could hear a crumb fall from 100 feet away!! That's what those big ears are for!:CUTE:

If Izzy/Mollie will not play with Frodo he will get about 6 inches from their face and start barking the most high-pitched bark that I have ever heard (it has left my ears ringing many a time) and will continue to do it until I put a stop to it. It is sooooo annoying!

Anytime that Izzy has to drink from something that isn't her home bowl she insists on gently sticking both of her front feet into it, pulling them out slowly and then proceeding to drink. Maybe they gives it a Frito flavor? :CUTE:

Mine do this too - it's hilarious! Back and forth a few times, actually. Millie taught Link right away to wait politely until she's done - it amazed me how fast he learned to sit and wait for her, it would have taken forever if I had tried.

Link has a funny habit of chewing/playing with his toys "on the edge". Any step will do, he'll be at the top of it. When his toy drops the single step into the kitchen it's no big deal, but when they drop all the way down the basement steps for the 100th time it gets a little old. And no, he's not allowed to go down the basement steps, and he knows it.

Millie is a champion victory dancer. It's cute when Link is sneaking up behind her to sniff her, um, business as she's doing it, then she finishes and kicks up grass all over him. I swear she puts some extra energy into it when he's back there.

Zoey likes to sit "up." Whether its on a picnic table or the coffee table or the back of the reading chair, she is always well above the floor.

Ziggy's a post potty dancer, which I thought was a male thing where he's vying for dominance with Zack, but I guess not.

Zena has a habit which bugs the heck out of me - she's always in my face - usually within six inches. I guess with her history and the fact that I took her back to the person who gave her to me for a while, she doesn't trust me enough to let me out of her sight. Of course Cavs are known to be velcro dogs so perhaps I'm reading too much into it.

My big boy Zack who lives with three other dogs doesn't like dogs! He spends all day guarding the house from invading dogs. He watches out the front window and the back sliding glass door ever vigilant. When my across the street neighbor's dog gets loose and comes into our yard, he jumps on the front door and yaps his little head off. At some point, I ask him in desperation, "Zack, what part of . . . Rottweiler . . . don't you understand." Actually, Willow wouldn't hurt a flea, a kitten or Zack, but I don't think I want to tell Zack that.

Aaaaahhhh! the gentle giants - some are so loving and precious. Makes me miss my Aladdin who thought he was a very small lapdog. Dale does the little potty dance but Chip doesn't. Bad habits - Dale grabs my pantlegs and I have to drag him across the floor with me. Now Chip has decided it looks like fun to get dragged so sometimes I have two corgis attached to my legs especially in the morning when I am heading for my first cup of coffee.

Tucker does the potty dance too.

Whenever I have to go upstairs Lulu runs 3/4 of the way up in front of me then lies down as if to block me from gettiing to the top. One of these days I will probably break my neck.

Tucker doesn't get "sneeze". Anytime I sneeze he comes running, no matter where he is, and will jump up on me and bark with the most puzzled look on his face. Yes, he will even leave his food dish to do it!

Oh... I feel so much better about Checkers now LOL. He does the same thing if I sneeze or cough. It really bugs him when I do either. The funny thing is Luke or Justin could cough all day with no reaction from Checkers, but as soon as I do it I end up with a corgi laying across my chest! I haven't been able to explain to him that trying to suppress laughter while trying to catch my breathe with a 30 lb weight on my chest only makes the cough worse! ROFL

I consider it a good day when poor Gator doesn't get "marked" as he is trying to do his morning pee *sigh*. He often has to get wiped down from Checkers hiking a leg on him first thing in the morning. Maybe I'll try to video it sometime... kinda funny in a gross way.

Gator's funny thing (other than his "van Dam" splits, of course) is that he sometimes falls asleep with just the tip of his tongue (a centimeter's worth?) sticking out of his mouth. After 30 minutes or so you can touch his tongue and it will be bone dry. He tries to put it back in his mouth but you can tell he gets a funny look on his face like "what happened to my tongue??!". Very comical!

Oh.. and both of my boys do the potty dance also...

Merlincorgi
06-22-2007, 08:20 AM
OH! When Gator is tired his ears flop a little like he's too tired to hold them up any more... normally it's just the tips that flop some. If he is REALLY tired (like when I get up at 3am with a screaming child) sometimes one of his ears will be all the way down and won't come up until he has gotten some more sleep. Never had a dog that I could judge how tired he was by his ears before!

She is, Leslie-she is. Romping through green fields, chasing butterflies and playing with all her friends. I hope she's met Katie and shown her around as I think they would have been good buddies while here. I'll remember that date and think of you in your remembrance of your precious companion.

My two do the potty dance and the bowl switch. Maya is also a dog that needs to be in your face and licking everyone with that overly gigantic tongue of hers. She also likes to take a toy and hold onto it by only one corner while the rest of it hangs out of her mouth. I'll have to try and get a picture because it's hard to explain but super cute.

Dudley's weird quirk is that if he hears you getting on the scale, he will run in from wherever he is to stare at it. Doesn't he know that women don't like to tell their weight?

I forgot to add that when both of them get tired their ears stick out to the side like they are just too tired to hold them up. I call it their "Yoda Ears"

Colby's Mom Taffy has a few neat quirks *g* She roos in the morning, especially to my husband. Her daughter from last year, Aurora, also roos. Taffy has to be the last one to pee in the spot when there are alot of dogs around. Taffy also likes to sleep in, so she'll crawl up on my chest and lay her head on my face so I can't get up!

Agatha is always ready to bring you a toy to throw. if you are in the bathroom, that's prime time for her to nose open the door and give you a toy. After all, you are not really busy anyhow so play with her

Both of them are grooming addicts. If I brush one, the other has to try to eel her way in. It's sometimes a bit "hairy" to try to get them brushed! But when I get the nail grinder out, it's every girl for herself and they run for the hills!

Oh wow!! Now I know where Colby gets his "don't wake me in the morning!" attitude from! He will sleep in until 8:30am some mornings! He'll snuggle with me in bed and snooze as I'm usually up at 7:30ish. Colby LOVES fetch and can do it for LONG stretches of time considering he's a puppy.

So neat to hear these stories!!!

Oh, one other thing I've noticed, Colby does a modified "flying squirrel" when he lays on his tummy. He will only stick the left leg out, the right always stays tucked under his body! He looks like a 3 legged corgi!!

Zip does the potty dance, too. The funniest quirk that Zip has: At night I lay on my right side and scratch him with my left hand. If I roll on my back and scratch him with my left hand, he growls! Zeke and Zia do the bowl switch, too. I guess one of Zeke's quirks is how he lays on the a/c vents here at the lake. Zia is perfect...she has no quirks! LOL!! One of her quirks is getting right in your face and barking a high pitch bark right before she kisses you.

Mrs. Grace, I'll try to see if I can get a shot of Taffy doing the three legged sprawl. Her daughter Aurora from last year does it too! It's amazing what the young ones get from the parents.

Just hope Colby doesn't follow *all* the traits..... Taffy climbs chain link fence and gets over it, Aurora climbs Trees!!!:ARG:

I'm so loving knowing all about your adventures with Colby, it's a real treat for me to *see* him grow up in such a fabulous environment.

Gus Does the victory dance less now than when he first got here... Dillon has never done the victory dance. Gus obsessively licks your hand and if you pull it away and he wasn't done, he will either go after the hand to continue licking it or he will find other exposed skin, like an arm, leg, foot, or face and continue his lick fest! what a kisser! Gus also aroos in the morning ...Dillon does too now and again...very cute.

If Dillon wants a toy, I will sometimes ask him to DO something for me, like give me a paw or roll over or i will ask for a kiss first, he rushes over and gives the kiss while grumbling and growling... then i demand a NICE kiss, and he gives you a kiss quietly but then growls when he pulls away LOL! Dillon also has the yoda ears when tired. Dillon is like his cousin Jackie in that he doesn't care for getting totally wet.

I love hearing about the quirks... Dudley is too funny about the scale!

Imagine having an earache and a very warm moist washcloth over the ear.

This is going to sound weird, but I actually look forward to it! If she doesn't do it, I start looking for her. (usually means I woke up first!) Strange the things you get used to on a day to day basis!

Milo only started doing the potty dance at 3 years of age. First he sniffs his achievement, then he turns and does the dance. He generally throws in back leg stretches too, they "finish" the dance. It cracks me up.

He also does his yodel or roo-ing, whenever he stretches (usually after a nap) but he will sometimes just stand up and do it.

When he sniffs a person, he pokes or stabs his nose with such gusto, and takes such a deep breath, it literally "sucks" clothing into his nose and he makes this funny chortle/huffing sound. He will keep doing it until he is satisfied.

Maybe that's what I need to wake me up work mornings. I have two alarms that go off five minutes apart and some mornings I still have to race around because I just reach over and turn them way down and the next thing you know, I'm thirty minutes behind schedule!!

Midge does the potty dance. I've always thought of that as a "boy dog thing." She started doing it after she stayed for a week with my neighbor's male corgi.

Another of her quirks is that when she gets something for dinner that she reallly likes, she eats it really fast and then burps. Does any of your dogs burp?

Dillon does burp too, when in school, he gets a lot of treats and sucks in quite a bit of air, well he is constantly burping ( LOUDLY) in class, and everyone gets a kick out of it.

Dillon also does the sniffing thing where he will jam his nose onto something and just SNUFF as loudly as he can ... it is funny!

They are alike in more ways than that Em! Jackie does the kiss thing too. She huffs, she puffs, she tries to get away with just touching her nose to you . . . she's so stingy! She also has the yoda ears when tired or not feeling well.

I may have said this before but Sooty and Cindy's quirks are to do with sounds- My father always used to say 'Been there' if he saw a place on tv that he had visited on holiday. Sooty used to run to the window looking onto the garden and bark three times as if to say 'so have I'. He now does it with me now my father has gone to live in a rest home

Cindy barks when I shut down AOL and the girl says 'Goodbye'. Not when it says 'you've got email' or 'welcome to AOL' I have to turn the sound off or remember to sing when I shutdown.

So far Mac and Colby have very different morning habits! Mac will sleep as long as we do, as far as I can tell... but as SOON as he's able to perceive movement or activity, forget it! He's up against the crate, ready for action :) He's slept soundly until we've gotten up at seven AM both nights now.. we're trying to get OURSELVES on a reasonable schedule because we're such big sleepers...we're being trained as much as he is!

Mac's other big habit is sleeping UNDER the futon. We have a couple of good pictures of that up... too funny!
