View Full Version : I've fallen...

...and I can't get up. Fallen for Cardis that is  (I swear I'm trying to stop these horribly lame puns and wordplays but I can't help it sometimes!)

Anywho, I've been becoming more and more interested in them since joining this site (and the recent Cardi puppy explosion sure didn't help :CUTE: ) and I really think my next dog will be a Cardi at this point. I most likely will not get another dog until I go through college and settle down (we're talking about 11 or 12 years down the road  , if all goes as planned).

So what I really wanted to ask (I have focus issues) is for any books/sites/etc. that have really good information on the breed.

Thanks in advance,
Lauren

I have gotten my last dog! By the time Delilah, Peanut and or Bugsy are gone from my life, I will probably be living in an old folks home. And even if I weren't, I could not in good conscience (sp) get another dog at 65-70. I have seen too many of them end up in shelters or other situations that were not good for the dog when their owner was no longer capable of caring for them. I just can't do it. I know I would be lonelier than ****, but I would rather be lonely than not be able to care for my furbaby.

Lauren, I know how you feel. I thought I was a true-blue Pembroke person, but since becoming involved on other sites and here and meeting some in person, I think I would definitely consider getting a Cardi in the future.

I was lucky to meet Miss Lulu, of Upper State New York, in person, and was really quite taken with her. I could see a lot of the Pembroke female characteristics in her, I didn't find her all that different - from my Pemrboke experiences. Plus, she's cute as a bug! Can't wait to see her in August! (Oh yeah, and everybody else too  )

Delilahsmom, I don't think you have to worry about being dogless any time soon, I'm sure you'll have many great years to come with your dogs! And then you'll just have to visit me all the time to get a corgi fix! :CUTE:

Thanks glencorgi!! They've all been bookmarked and ready to be read!

I was a die-hard Pembroke fan too, I had no interest whatsoever in Cardis, even seeing them around town I just considered them another non Pem dog breed.
It just goes to show how much our opinions and tastes change, heck when I was 8 we almost got a Pem but I told my mom I thought they were *covers Izzy and Frodo's giant ears* ugly *ducks and covers* Had I only known *sighs* I could have fed my addiction much earlier.

Thanks Linda, that looks like a great site!

LOL, thanks for the welcome Susan, glad to be here! :CUTE:

Between you and Cheryl, I'll be set for corgi fixes! And I agree - I won't have to worry about being "dogless" for several years! Peanut is only 3, Delilah will be a year old in August and Bugsy is only 3.5 months old! I figure that will take me at least 15 years!

I already know that I want another Cardi. We will probably wait until the powers that be decide to bring one we have now to the bridge (jeez I hate to even think of that), but I know another is in our future, and heck I even have a breeder in mind already! I'm hooked on Cardis!:TWITCHY:

I'm most likely going to go the rescue route, I figure when I'm ready my two will probably be quite old (which is so weird to think about because they're only 17 months now  ) so I'd like to adopt an elderly Cardi from rescue. Petfinder and the rescue sites have become my worst enemy! :ARG:

I too have been won over by the Cardis here! Someday our little Smokey will come home to be with us. And I have a cardi breeder in mind  (can we say Uncle Mac?)

I've come to really appreciate Cardis and met two that Milo and I encounter on our walks about town. They are so cute and comical looking, just love them. I would seriously consider a Cardi for my next pem. I love everything about them. It would be fun to own one of each pem!

I agree.... one of each!!!!

What a handsome picture of Sam! Amanda, I hope Sam is feeling better after his crate rest. What's up?

And is there a more precious face than Cardi Maya???? She is just stunning!

There is an article in this month's Mayflower PWCC magazine about adopting Senior Corgis and also an article in this month's Whole Dog Journal about adopting Senior dogs. When I retire, I think this will be the route I go. I won't need to spend $ on day care and overnights as I won't be travelling as much so can afford the extra Vet bill that will likely come with a Senior dog.

And that puppy stuff..... been there, done that, got the teeth marks all over my house to prove it!

Cardigans are great- I will always have a few in the house- by far the breed most suited to my personality- so far...Already I am dreaming of the "next" dog- and I have FOUR! But I won't be getting another for a few years- 5 at least...

Susan- Sam is still lame. Getting better slowly but we had a minor setback on the weekend- he went to my parents house for the weekend and he got a bit too much exercise so now is walking around on three legs..

Hey youngster- I waited until I was 40 to feed my Corgi addiction!! I saw my first in 1979 and decided that was the dog for me and in 2001 I got Riley!! Now, that is patience!! But, I'll never be without 2. I really love having 2, and maybe some day, one of each breed. I'm planning on sticking around for a long time! :BIGGRIN"

Wow Deb - we are about the same. I met my first one (and fell in love) in 83 and didn't get one until 2005.

I prefer senior dogs to puppies, always have, I have no clue what possessed me to get a puppy, let alone 2 puppies at the same time :TWITCHY:

Ack, I gotta go, but I'll finish this post later...

I have to say the Vet bill is more for a puppy than a senior or about equal. A puppy has all the vaccinations, then there are the trips if he gets into something. The dog food bill goes down with a senior when the point comes where they slow down and need to eat less. Note I said need not want. Having had Pepper as a senior and now a puppy, there are pro and con with each. Pepper didn't really slow down until 13 if that helps you all, and that was from an injury.

The look I love of a Pem over a cardi is how a Pem can look like a fox. The one thing to be honest I'm a little worried about is how big a cardi can get. I mean Chester may be very close to 40 pounds and that is staying trim! Pepper was a trim 26 pounds. I better go lift some weights.
